Researchers Treat Ailing Orca J50 With Antibiotics

(Seattle, WA)  --  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is making progress in their effort to provide aid to an ailing southern resident orca.  The NOAA says a response team reached the orca named J50 yesterday near San Juan Island and treated her with a long-acting broad-spectrum antibiotic.  The response team is still awaiting results of a health assessment for the whale.  The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans confirmed yesterday that they're issuing permits to treat the whale in Canadian waters.  Similar permits have already been issued on the U.S. side.
