Woman Sworn In As OR's 1st Indian American County Official

(Portland, OR)  --  A new Multnomah County commissioner is celebrating a famous first.  The Oregonian reports that Susheela Jayapal was sworn in yesterday as the first Indian American to hold an elected county office in the state.  She left India at 16, went to college in the U.S. and won a four-way race for an open commission seat in May.  Her platform called for fighting gentrification and homelessness.
