City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty Pens Open Letter To PPB Chief

(Portland, OR)  --  City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty is calling on the Portland Police Bureau to clarify exactly what constitutes an unlawful gathering.  Hardesty published an open letter to Police Chief Chuck Lovell yesterday asking that question and demanding the bureau stop using tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters.  Hardesty pointed out the irony that police are using violence against community members who are protesting police violence.  The commissioner says she's grown increasingly alarmed over police conduct since the protests began a month ago.  The letter comes after police declared an unlawful assembly and used tear gas against protesters Tuesday night despite a judge's order that officers stop using such measures except in cases of life-threatening situations.
