PPB Announces New Anti-Racism, Active Bystander Training

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Police Bureau will add new "active bystander" training and anti-racism training for its officers this winter.  Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell announced the new training yesterday.  The "active bystander" training will teach officers how to intervene when they see a colleague doing something that's illegal or in violation of bureau policy.  The new training comes in response to ongoing protests sparked by the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis in May.  Lovell called out the other Minneapolis officers who failed to intervene and stop the officer who knelt on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, calling their failure to act "disturbing."
