World's Oldest Known Orangutan Dies At 61

(Portland, OR) -- An orangutan believed to be the oldest in the world has died. Officials at the Oregon Zoo say Inji had to be euthanized on Saturday. She was 61 years old and had lived at the zoo in Portland since 1961. Orangutans can typically live to be around 40 in the wild. The zoo's senior primate keeper noted "Orangutans are at the brink of extinction -- especially in Sumatra, where Inji came from." In mourning her passing, another zoo staffer said Inji's "ability to connect with people was incredible. She inspired generations."
