(Olympia, WA) -- Washington state Congresswoman Jaime Herrara Beutler is in the national spotlight for her witness account in the second impeachment trial against former President Trump. The Vancouver-area Republican Representative issued a statement Friday detailing a phone call House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy made to Trump during last month's deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building. Herrara Beutler says Trump denied McCarthy's request to "publicly and forcefully call off the riot" and told him "I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are." The statement prompted Democrats to move to call witnesses in the impeachment trial, an effort that was later abandoned in favor of entering Herrara Beutler's statement into the record instead. The Senate voted Saturday 57-to-43 to convict, falling short of the two-thirds vote threshold needed for conviction. Seven Republicans joined the entire Democratic caucus in voting for conviction.
