Stoners Rejoice On 4/20

(Undated)  --  Call it the Cannabis Christmas.  Or the Pot Smoker's Holiday.  But stoners around the world simply refer to April 20th as "4/20" [[ four-twenty ]] and a celebration of the cannabis culture.  Urban legends abound about the origin of this pot-a-palooza.  But it's often attributed to the Waldos, a group of high school students in California who set out in 1971 to find a rumored pot patch planted by Coast Guardsmen on Point Reyes.  They reportedly met after school at 4:20 p.m. to search and get high, but never found the patch.  The phrase "420" became code for marijuana.  But the publication "High Times" says the "holiday" idea was conceived in 1990 by fans of the cult band Grateful Dead who agreed to meet and smoke 420 at 4:20 p.m. on every 4/20.
