Woman Awarded $8M In Damages For Deadly Amtrak Cascades Derailment

(Portland, OR) -- A woman is receiving $8 million in damages for injuries sustained during the 2017 deadly derailment of a Portland-bound Amtrak Cascades train in Washington state. A federal jury in Tacoma, Washington awarded her $2.5 million for past non-economic compensatory damages and $5.5 million for future noneconomic damages.

The woman was among dozens of people who were injured when the train derailed during the inaugural run of the Point Defiance Bypass route from Seattle to Portland. Three people were killed.

The National Transportation Safety Board ruled that inadequate planning, insufficient crew training, excessive speed and human error were to blame for the derailment.
