(Astoria, OR) -- The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alert has made its final visit to Astoria. The ship just completed a 59-day mission targeting drug shipments in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The cutter Alert will be moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida as part of a larger Coast Guard Force realignment. As part of one mission, the Alert crew recovered nearly five-thousand kilograms of cocaine, valued at over $143 million that had been tossed into the ocean by smugglers. The cutter Alert was commissioned in 1969.
