Meningococcal Disease Suspected In Student Death

(Portland, OR)  --  Officials say meningococcal disease is suspected in the death of a 17-year-old Central Catholic High School student.  Jacob Parkhurst, who had been reported to be in good health Friday, was hospitalized Monday and died Tuesday night of what's being called a "severe, invasive bacterial infection."  Health officials are awaiting test results that they hope will identify a specific cause of death.  The rate of meningococcal disease in Oregon has declined steadily since 1994, when 140 cases were reported in the state.
