(Portland, OR) -- Portland Mayor Charlie Hales is renewing his push for construction of a new Trader Joe's on a vacant city-owned parcel. The mayor held a meeting yesterday of community leaders from North and Northeast Portland, during which he also announced plans to spend another 20-million dollars during the next five years on the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area. Hales says the historically African-American sector of Portland needs the economic opportunity that would be provided with the bolstering of the urban-renewal area and the opening of the new Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's announced in early February it would not open a planned store in Northeast Portland because of negative community reaction.
