(Salem, OR) -- A rare disease found in sheep and goats was detected in Oregon. Classical Scrapie was thought to have been eradicated in the U.S. It's fatal for sheep and goats. It was detected at an Oregon slaughterhouse, as part of USDA's ongoing surveillance work. The Oregon Department of Agriculture is working to identify the sheep flock of origin and determine whether any exposed animals are in Oregon. It's been five years since the last case of Scrapie in the U-S, putting the country just two years away from declaring freedom from the disease. This detection is likely to reset that clock.
