Multnomah County Preschool For All Ahead Of Expectations
(Portland, OR) -- Multnomah County's Preschool for All program could meet expectations for universal coverage earlier than expected. A new projection from Portland State University finds fewer births and more children leaving the county has reduced the number of kids who could attend the free program. Originally, 14-thousand three- and four-year-olds were expected. Now that number will be down to 13-thousand by 2030. Not all those kids would go to preschool. It's estimated around eight-thousand children would attend. The County Board is considering whether to delay a proposed increase in the personal income tax that funds the program.
