(Corvallis, OR) -- Leaded aviation fuel causes an increase in airborne lead near airports. Piston engine powered planes use leaded fuel, and the exhaust contains lead. Oregon State University studied moss near the Hillsboro and Troutdale airports, because moss traps lead from the air. They found lead levels seven times higher than areas away from airports. The highest concentrations were near runways, but aviation fuel lead was found three-quarters of a mile from the airports. Lead is hazardous to children and researchers recommend parents living near airports talk with their pediatricians about getting their children tested for lead.
