(Portland, OR) -- Portland's largest overnight homeless shelter has officially closed as the city and Multnomah County deal with budget cuts. The 40-bed Northwest Northrup shelter in the Pearl District is one of several city shelters shutting down this year, with Portland expecting to have 580 regular adult overnight beds available this winter compared with 876 last year. The shelter had also faced a lawsuit from a neighboring apartment complex alleging drug use, public disorder and other problems around the property. A judge is expected to rule on that case within two weeks.
