(Portland, OR) -- Health officials have confirmed the first detection of an invasive mosquito species native to Australia in Multnomah County. The mosquito was captured August 25th near Kelley Point Park in North Portland, prompting additional monitoring in the surrounding area. Officials say the species can transmit diseases, including West Nile virus, but there's no evidence the mosquito was infected or that the species has become established locally. Residents are encouraged to eliminate standing water around their homes to reduce potential mosquito breeding sites.
