Prineville DUII Fatal Crash

(Prineville) -- A Prineville woman faces second-degree manslaughter charges and DUII… after a fatal crash on NW Lamonta Road Sunday afternoon. The Crook County Sheriff’s Office says Ladonna Erickson was driving when the vehicle left the road and collided with a building. 
Passenger Rodney Stephens was ejected and died at the scene.  Erickson sustained minor injuries and was taken to St. Charles Medical Center before being booked into the Crook County Jail.  Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Butte Creek Fire Burns 2,000 Acres

(Clarno, OR) -- Wildland fire crews responded to a 300-acre fire in North-Central Oregon on Sunday attacking the flames from both the ground and air. Wheeler County Fire and Rescue and interagency fire crews are in the area nine miles north of Clarno. Helicopters pulled water from the John Day River as the Butte Creek Fire grew to around two-thousand acres. The cause is under investigation.

Man Killed In Deschutes County Crash

(Sunriver, OR) -- A Sunriver man is dead following a crash on Highway 97 in Deschutes County. Oregon State Police say the crash happened Friday afternoon. Police say 76-year-old Marvin Lee Cudd Jr. was trying to cross the highway after stopping on the shoulder when 43-year-old Joshua Dale Musick crashed into him. Cudd died at the scene. Musick suffered minor injuries.

Oregon's DPSST votes against Sheriff van der Kamp

A state law enforcement committee, the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, unanimously voted to strip Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp of his certification - for life.  As Heather Roberts reports, it comes just days after he was expelled from the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association. 

 

 

 

Bend joins Suit against Feds

Sisters Arrest

A 29-year-old male, Daniel Virgen-Chavez, was arrested Tuesday morning following a series of violent incidents in Sisters. At about 10:50 a.m., a gold sedan reportedly struck a 35-year-old pedestrian on the sidewalk near West Hood Avenue and Highway 20, then fled the scene. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment. Minutes later, deputies responded to a separate call at Mainline Station, where the same suspect allegedly brandished a knife during a dispute with a 46-year-old man. Virgen-Chavez was apprehended nearby without further incident and faces multiple charges, including assault, reckless driving, and weapons offenses.

Redmond Police BOLO

Redmond police responded early Tuesday to a reported burglary on the 1800 block of SW Canal Boulevard. Authorities believed the suspect; 30-year-old Tyler J. Kane of Bend, might have been inside the home. Officers searched the residence but did not find him. Out of caution, nearby schools were placed on secure status while police cleared the area. Kane faces several charges including burglary, theft, harassment related to domestic violence, coercion, and an outstanding probation violation warrant. Anyone with information about Kane’s whereabouts is urged to contact non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911.
 

Sheriff's Association Removes Deschutes County Sheriff

The Oregon Sheriff's Association board permanently expels the Deschutes County Sheriff. This follows the Deschutes County District Attorney classifying Sheriff Kent van der Kamp as an unreliable witness. Van der Kamp was notified the OSSA board would address his status, but chose not to appear or provide a written statement on his own behalf. In what could be another blow to van der Kamp's ability to lead his Sheriff's department, the state law enforcement licensing body meets Thursday to discuss their own investigation.

Bend Federal Lawsuit Potential

The City of Bend can now…if necessary… join lawsuits against the federal government to make sure grant money keeps coming for improvement projects.

 

 

 

Redmond Traffic Project

The City of Redmond is hoping the state transportation department will begin work on what has been identified as ODOT’s number one project for the Region. 

 

 

 

Evelyn Weaver Follow-Up

Last week Bend Police were able to announce a suspect was in custody in Canada for the 2023 Evelyn Weaver murder.  We’re learning a little more on the investigators efforts to solve the crime.  Mike Thomas reports:

Amazon coming to Redmond

Arrest made in Evelyn Weaver case

A Canadian man awaits extradition to Bend to face murder charges for the death of Evelyn Weaver.

The 28-year-old woman was found dead in her Northeast Bend home in July 2023.  

 

 

 

Arrest made in Bend shooting

A 21-year-old Bend man was arrested for a shooting Tuesday night in Southwest Bend.  

 

 

 

Embroiled Deschutes Co. Sheriff

Oregon’s law enforcement certification agency will discuss the future of the Deschutes County Sheriff, who just took office in January.  Heather Roberts reports.

A 111-acre prescribed burn is set for today a mile west of Bend… near Aspen and Dillon Falls Day Use areas.

Fire Free Season Begins

Deschutes County’s Fire Free days began over the weekend at Knott Landfill in Bend.  Meanwhile, Friday afternoon south of La Pine … a 2.4-acre wildfire was quickly contained by firefighters…highlighting the need for the annual event.

 

 

 

China Hat Closed

The wildfire fuels reduction project south of Bend has now closed off public access to over 34-thousand acres of National Forest land. 

 

 

 

Cabin Butte Closure

The Deschutes National Forest closing the Cabin Butte Vegetation Management Project area south of Bend Thursday for at least one year.  This will force out illegal campers in the China Hat Road area.
