We start with the Bend Elks who are fighting for their lives to make the playoffs in the Westcoast collegiate summer league.

Bend has won 6 of their last 10 games and their last two in a row beating the Grey Wolves in Gresham. The Elks notched a 9-2 win Saturday night, and blasted the Grey Wolves 13-to-8 yesterday.

With the wins Bend is now only 1-game out of first place, and a playoff berth, in the south division.

The Elks finish the road series tonight in Gresham then will conclude the regular season hosting Cowlitz Friday through Sunday.



(Houston, TX)  -- The Portland Timbers played to a 2-2 draw with the Dynamo on Saturday in Houston.  Sebastian Blanco and Diego Valeri scored for the Timbers.  Portland is tied for fourth in the MLS West with 31 points.  The Timbers host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday.



(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon begins its fall practices today under first-year coach Willie Taggart.  The Ducks lost eight of 12 games last year and fired coach Mark Helfrich.  Wide receiver remains a question with Charles Nelson the only returnee with more than two-career catches.
 



(Eugene, OR)  --  Cubs catching prospect Michael Cruz hit a grand slam in the first inning as the Emeralds routed the Hillsboro Hops 9-1 in Eugene.  Cruz is hitting .347 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 13 games with Eugene in the Northwest League.
 



(Corvallis, OR)  --  Jake Luton is healthy and competing for the Oregon State starting quarterback job. He is back to his normal 234-pound weight after dropping 30 pounds in spring drills due to a mysterious illness.  He threw for 3,551 yards and 40 touchdowns last year at Ventura College.  Marcus McMaryioin and Darell Garretson are also battling for the starting Beavers QB job.



(Houston, TX)  --  The Timbers will play Saturday in Houston.  Portland is coming off a 2-1 victory Sunday over Vancouver.  The Blazers are tied for fourth in the MLS Western Conference standings with 30 points.  The Houston Dynamo are in third with 32 points.  Winger Dairon Asprilla and left back Vytas are questionable for the match.  In other news, the team officially acquired New Zealand international Bill Tuiloma.



(Renton, WA)  --  The start of training camp for the Seahawks is just days away.  Seattle will hold its first practice of camp on Sunday.  The 'Hawks open preseason play against the LA Chargers on Sunday, August 13.
 



(Boise, ID)  --  Yan Sanchez had four hits, including a double, RBI and run scored, to help pace the Hops past the Hawks 6-1 in Boise.  Riley Smith tossed seven frames of two-hit, scoreless ball to pick up the win.  The Hops finished off the three-game sweep and head to Eugene to open a three-game set tonight.

(Santa Clara, CA)  --  The United States are the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup champions.  Jordan Morris scored in the 88th minute to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Jamaica in the Gold Cup final at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.  Jozy Altidore also netted a goal as the U.S. claimed its sixth Gold Cup title.



(Keizer, OR)  --  Ryan Kirby bashed a three-run homer to break the game open as the Volcanoes topped the Emeralds 6-1 in Keizer.  Julio Benitez tossed five innings of scoreless ball to earn the win.  Salem-Keizer improved to 18-and-23.  Enrique De Los Rios surrendered all six runs in five innings of work to take the loss for Eugene.  The Emeralds are 22-and-19.



(Boise, ID)  --  Pavin Smith and Jorge Perez had a pair of hits and two RBI apiece to help lead the Hops past the Hawks 6-1 in Boise.  Connor Grey tossed seven frames of one-run ball to pick up the win.  The Hops have won two straight and will look for the series sweep in today's finale.



(Los Angeles, CA)  --  The Pac-12 preseason media poll has been released.  The Oregon Ducks were picked to finish fourth in the North, while Oregon State came in one spot behind them in fifth.  Washington was selected to repeat as Pac-12 North champs, while USC was picked to top the South.



In Westcoast Collegiate League action where after The Bend Elks pounded out a 19-to-7 win in Kelowna, and leaving Canada late Monday night with a series win, it all imploded last night at home in the 9th inning at Vince Genna Stadium in front of over 24-hundred fans.

After 3 ties, and two lead changes, Bend gave up 3 runs in the top of the ninth inning committing 3 costly errors and giving Yakima an 8-5 win in the opening game of a 3-game home series with a playoff spot up for grabs.

The Elks also failed to get runs across the plate leaving 12 runners on base as the Pippins walked 8 Bend hitters on the night.

With just 8-games to play in the W-C-L regular season, the Elks find themselves still 4-1/2 games out of first place in the South division and a playoff berth.

Bend will reload tonight and try to avenge last night’s loss to the Pippins for ‘Free Kids’ Wednesday, where all kids are admitted to the ball park free.
First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m..



(Eugene, OR)   --  Oregon coach Willie Taggart, quarterback Justin Herbert and linebacker Troy Dye will be the Ducks' participants in the Pac 12 media days today in Los Angeles.  After losing eight of 12 games last season, Oregon fired coach Mark Helfrich and hired Taggart.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers acquired forward Andrew Nicholson from the Nets for Allen Crabbe in a salary dumping trade.  Nicholson, however, will likely never suit up for Portland.  The Blazers plan to wave Nicholson and stretch his 21-million-dollar salary across the next seven seasons.  The trade would also lower Portland's tax bill from about 48-million-dollars to less than five million.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Beavers worked out in pads with the temperature 91 degrees at the Oregon State Tommy Prothro Football Complex.  Arizona Western Juco transfer defensive tackle Craig Evans missed the practice.  Oregon State coach Gary Anderson says Evans is taking care of business.



(Boise, ID)  --  Camden Duzenack had two hits, scored two runs and drove in another as Hillsboro won 8-6 in Boise.  Pavin Smith went 1-for-3 for the Hops as the Diamondbacks' first-base prospect leads the Northwest League with a.358 batting average.  The Hops are 23-and-17



(Keizer, OR)  --  Emeralds catcher Michael Cruz hit two home runs in a 7-6 win over Salem-Keizer in a Northwest League game.  Giants outfield prospect Bryce Johnson went 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Volcanoes.  Johnson raised his average to .329.  Eugene, a Cubs' farm club, improved to 22-and-18.  The Volcanoes dropped to 17-and-23.



The Bend Elks played long ball last night in a big way as they hit three 2-run home runs in a 19-7 thrashing of Kelowna in Canada to close out a 3-game trip.

It’s the most runs of the season for the Elks who are trying to run down the southern division of the Westcoast League for a shot at the Playoffs with 9-games to play.

Rocco Ferrari belted a pair of 2-run blasts and Niko Holm capped the night off with a 9th inning dinger, his second home run in as many nights.

The Elks take the series in Canada and it’s the third straight road series win and the Elks returns home tonight to face the Yakima. The Pippins and Elks begin a 3-game series tied for third place in the South, both 4-1/2 games out of first place.

It’s 2-dollar Tuesday and admission is just 2-bucks, beverages and hot dogs only 2-dollars. Game time at Vince Genna Stadium is 6:35pm.
 



(Portland, OR)  --  While the Trail Blazers were among the teams courting the Knicks for the services of Carmelo Anthony, he will not be Portland bound.  Anthony is one of three NBA players with a no-trade clause.  He has told sources Portland is not on his list of possible destinations if the Knicks deal him.



(Eugene, OR)  --  Former Oregon star wide receiver Darren Carrington pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.  Carrington was arrested on July 1st.  He's been dismissed from the program.  Oregonlive.com reported he visited Utah last week.  Carrington has graduated so he's eligible to play immediately if he transfers.

(Undated)  --  In Minor League baseball action last night, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were beaten by the Vancouver Canadians 8-3 in Keizer.  The teams resume the series tonight, 6:35 p.m. first pitch.  The Hops rallied in the ninth for a 6-5 win over Spokane in Hillsboro.  They play the second of a five-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers will look to snap their six-game winless streak when they hit the field this Sunday to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps.  Portland is coming off of a 4-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.  The Whitecaps have won two-straight and sit one-spot ahead of Portland in the Western Conference table.



(Portland, OR)  --  The ladies hit the pitch this weekend as the Portland Thorns welcome the Washington Spirit tomorrow.  Portland sits in fourth place with 22 points, Washington is in last with 12.  The Spirit did knock off the Thorns 1-0 in their last matchup on June 24th.



The 38th edition of the Cascade Cycling Classic got underway yesterday in the high desert with stage-1 of 5 and the McKenzie Pass road race. The Men’s winner was Alex Howes of the USA National Team, and Kristy Lay was the Women’s winner.

 

Defending Men’s Champion Robin Carpenter was third and former 2-time Champion Sergei Vetkov finished 20th.

 

Stage-2 today is the Skyliners Time Trials in west Bend starting at 10am on Skyliners road.



(Beaverton, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers are trying their best to make themselves players for Knicks star Carmelo Anthony.  Portland teammates Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum said at Lillard's basketball camp in Beaverton, Oregon on Wednesday that they've been talking to Anthony about the idea of joining up with them.  "Melo" has a no trade clause and has reported he wouldn't waive it to play for the Blazers, but their two top players said Anthony was "intrigued" at the option.  The only reported destinations Anthony has stated he would go are Houston and Cleveland.



The Bend Elks Westcoast collegiate summer league team resumed second-half League play last night after two days off for the W-C-L All Star Game, and the visiting Gresham Greysox outlasted Bend, 11-7.

 

Former local prep stars Colin Runge (run-gee) and Cal Waterman did their best to get the Elks what would have been their 7th win in the last 8-games.  Waterman hit a 2-run Home Run, and a Double, while Runge went

2-for-5 on the night fresh off playing in the All-Star classic last night in Yakima.

 

But, the Elks defense imploded committing 5 errors on the night leading to 3-unearned runs.

 

Bend is 19-and-21 overall and play the Grey Sox again tonight at Vince Genna Stadium in game-2 of the 3-game series.



(Undated)  --  In Minor League baseball action last night, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes edged the Spokane Indians, 3-2, on the road.  Jose Marte tossed five innings of one-run ball to earn the win.  The Volcanoes host Vancouver today.  The Hops visited Vancouver today and earned a 6-0 win on the road.  Hillsboro swept the Canadiens in five games and visits Boise today.
 



(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers' winless streak is up to six games after a 4-1 loss to Real Salt Lake in Portland on Wednesday.  Jack Barmby scored his first goal of the season in second half stoppage time to prevent the shutout.  Portland now has 27 points in the standings and sits in a three-way tie with Seattle and Vancouver for sixth in the West.

(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's rebuilding defense is losing a promising young lineman.  Rutger Reitmaier, a freshman from Nashville, has decided to withdraw his commitment from the University of Oregon.  The 6-foot-3, 281-pound Reitmaier originally committed to the Ducks in June of 2016.  The Ducks have also lost defensive lineman Rex Manu for the year to an injury.

If you’ve seen a lot of cyclists on the roads of central Oregon, that is because tomorrow kicks off the 38th annual Cascade Cycling Classic presented by Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield.

 

It all starts in the mountains tomorrow with Stage-1 of 5 and the McKenzie Pass road race. The Classic is the longest running elite stage race in North America and taking place during the Tour de France.

In the Westcoast League summer collegiate baseball where the Bend Elks have tonight off for the annual League All-Star game being held in Yakima.

 

The Elks roll back in to action tomorrow night when they host the Gresham Grey Sox at Vince Genna Stadium with first pitch set for 635pm. As always it’s ‘Free Kids Wednesday.’

 

Before the 2-day break, Bend had won 6 of their last 7 games to remain third place in the South Division just a game-and-a half out of first place. The Elks need to win the second-half of League play to make the Playoffs.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  The Lakers didn't need Lonzo Ball to beat the Trail Blazers, 110-98, and come away with the Las Vegas Summer League championship.  Ball was out with a mild calf strain.  Caleb Swanigan went for 25 points, 12 boards and seven assists in the loss.  Portland went 5-and-3.



(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State baseball might be getting a boost to its pitching staff for next season.  According to multiple outlets, MLB won't let starter Drew Rasmussen become a free agent.  He didn't sign with the Rays, who took him with the 31st overall pick.  Rasmussen has two years of eligibility left at OSU.
 



(Eugene, OR)  --  Oregon's defensive line is losing some of its depth.  The Ducks announced defensive tackle Rex Manu will miss the entire 2017-18 season due to "medical reasons."  Manu had 19 total tackles during the two seasons he's participated in.



The Bend Elks put together a 6-game win streak until that ended last night on the road in Walla Walla. Bend dropped the third game of a 3-game series with the Sweets in Walla Walla, 13-to-7.

The Elks will take the next two days off for the Westcoast League’s All Star Game in Yakima tomorrow night.

Bend has three players in the mid-summer classic. Colin Runge, a Ridgeview High graduate was selected along with outfielder Derek Chapman, and Pitcher Khalil Rivera.

The Elks resume league play Wednesday night hosting the Gresham Greysox in a 3-game set through Friday night.  635pm first pitch for each of the 3-games.

(Portland, OR)  --  Hayley Raso headed in the game's lone goal in the 70th minute to lift the Thorns past the North Carolina Courage 1-0 at Providence Park on Saturday.  The win snapped North Carolina's three-game winning streak.  Portland snapped a two-game winless streak of its own and moved into fourth-place in the league with 22 points.  The Thorns welcome the Washington Spirit to town this coming weekend.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  The Blazers rallied from a 19-point deficit to clip the Grizzlies 87-82 and advance to the NBA Summer League Championship Game in Las Vegas.  Janell Stokes led the charge with 22 points and 15 rebounds.  Caleb Swanigan added 19 points and 11 boards in the winning effort.  Portland will face the Lakers in tonight's championship game.

(Las Vegas, NV)  --  Nick Johnson led the way with 17 points off the bench as the Blazers clipped the Raptors 91-85 in Summer League action in Las Vegas.  Caleb Swanigan added 13 points and 11 boards as Portland picked up its third victory in Vegas.  Jarnell Stokes also scored 13 with Jake Layman adding 12.  The Blazers will take on the Spurs in the quarterfinals of the Summer League playoffs tomorrow.

We start with the Bend Elks where 3 Bend pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, and every Elk but one player had a base hit on the night in which Bend pounded out 18 hits to double up Bellingham, 14-7.

It’s the second big win in a row for the Elks after the team returned home from a 6-game road trip and bombed Bellingham 10-zip last night.

Matt Kroon and Patrick Flynn homered for Bend, and former local prep stars Colin Runge, George Mendazona, and Cal Waterman combined for 6 of the 18 Bend hits in the win.

Bend finishes up the 3-game series and goes for the sweep tonight at 635pm at Vince Genna Stadium. The Elks have Thursday off and head to Walla Walla to face the Sweets on Friday night.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  Zach Collins is out for the remainder of the NBA Summer League with a bruised right thigh.  Collins aggravated the injury Tuesday.  The seven-foot center was the tenth-overall pick in the NBA draft after leading Gonzaga to the NCAA title game.  Third-year guard Pat Connaughton has a left hamstring strain and also won't return for summer league play.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  Jake Layman scored 22 points and hauled in seven rebounds to lead the Trail Blazers to a 88-76 victory over the Bulls in NBA Summer League play at the Cox Pavilion.  First-round pick Caleb Swanigan finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Free agent signee Jarnell Stokes was impressive with 16 points and 17 rebounds.  The Blazers will face the Raptors tomorrow



(Eugene, OR)  --  Deajah Stevens is bypassing her senior season with Oregon and turning pro.  She was a 2016 Olympic finalist and the 2017 U.S. 200-meters champion.  She announced her decision on Instagram.  She will race in the IAAF World Track and Field Championships next month in London.



(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State was honored with a team academic excellent award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.  This award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2016-17 season. Oregon State and Stanford are the only Pac-12 schools to earn the recognition.



(Keizer, OR)  --  Logan Baldwin hit a two-run homer in the Volcanoes eight-run eighth inning, but Salem-Keizer fell short in a 10-9 home loss to Boise.  The big inning also included a two-run Dalton Combs pinch-hit double.  Volcanoes center fielder Malique Ziegler had three hits to raise his Northwest League-leading batting average to .347.



(Hillsboro, OR)  --  Shortstop Yan Sanchez had three hits, including two triples, but the Hops fell to Eugene 7-5 in Hillsboro.  Reliever Cal Becker gave up three runs on four hits and a walk, while retiring only two batters in the Emeralds' four-run seventh.  The Diamondbacks' farm club fell to 14-and-13 in the Northwest League.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  Zach Collins exited the Trail Blazers' 99-85 loss to the Spurs with a right quad contusion.  He played just 11 minutes, scoring four points, in the NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas. Collins was the 10th overall pick in the NBA draft.  In addition, third-year guard Pat Connaughton sat out the second half with a left hamstring injury.



(Hillsboro, OR)  --  The Hops will host the Northwest League vs. Pioneer League All-Star Game on August 1st at Ron Tonkin Field.  There will be a Home Derby prior to the game.  There will be three days of festivities, including Party at the Park the night before the All-Star Game.  The Hops are a Diamondbacks farm club.
 



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  Caleb Swanigan scored 15 and hauled in nine rebounds in the first half in the Trail Blazers' 99-85 loss to the Spurs in a NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas.  Swanigan finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double.  The Blazers picked him 26th overall out of Purdue in the NBA draft.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers take a five-game winless streak into the MLS break.  The Timbers do not play again until July 19th when they host Real Salt Lake. They have draws with Kansas City and Chicago in their first two July matches.  Portland is fourth in the Western Conference standings with 27 points in 20 matches.



(Corvallis, OR)  -- Oregon State junior running back Ryan Nall is on the Maxwell Award Watch List, which is presented annually to the top collegiate player in the country.  Nall has 1,406 career yards rushing on 6.4 yards per carry.  He has 1,729 all-purpose yards with 18 touchdowns.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  The Trail Blazers tangle with the Spurs today in a NBA Summer League game at Cox Pavilion.  Portland has split its first two games.  Caleb Swanigan tops the Trail Blazers in scoring, averaging 14 points.
 



(Everett, WA)  --  Orlando Garcia and Logan Baldwin homered for Salem-Keizer, but the Giants' farm club lost 9-6 in Everett.  The Volcanoes' record dropped to 12-14 in Northwest League play



(Spokane, WA)  --  First baseman Pavin Smith had two hits and drove in a run as the Hillsboro Hops lost to the Spokane Indians 6-3 in a Northwest League game.  Smith was a first-round pick of the Diamondbacks in the June draft and is hitting .333.  Second-round pick Drew Ellis homered for Hillsboro and is hitting .314.  The Hops are 14-and-12.



The Bend Elks return to action tonight in the Westcoast League on the road after a day off and will look to snap a 3-game losing skid in Victoria, British Columbia.

Bend takes on the Victoria Harbor Cats for a 3-game series through Sunday after dropping its first three games of this extended road trip in Corvallis to the Division leading Knights.

The Elks are 12-and-18 overall, and 0-and-3 to start second half play in the W-C-L. The Division winners of each of half of the summer season make the playoffs, and Corvallis already punched its ticket claiming the first
27-games of the League.

(Renton, WA)  --  Training camp for the Seahawks is around the corner.  Camp kicks off on July 29th at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.  The Seahawks open preseason action on August 13th with a road date against the Los Angeles Rams.



(Las Vegas, NV)  --  The Blazers' Summer League squad opens play tomorrow in Las Vegas versus the Jazz.  Rookie big men Zach Collins and Caleb Swanigan are both on the roster, as well as returning Blazers Pat Connaughton and Jake Layman.  Each team is guaranteed at least five games in Vegas.



We start with Westcoast League summer collegiate baseball where the Bend Elks dropped all 3-games in a series in Corvallis against the Knights to begin the second half of League play.

Last night, Corvallis came from behind twice to down the Elks 6-4 at Goss Stadium-Coleman Field, the home of the Oregon State Beavers.

Corvallis won the opening game of the series Monday night, 9-1, and scored an 8-zip shutout win on the 4th.

Bend finished the first half of the W-C-L League play 12-and-15, 5-games behind South Division winner Corvallis.

The Elks are off today traveling across the Canadian border where they will meet the Victoria Harbor Cats Friday night. Bend returns home Monday night hosting Bellingham.
 



(Portland, OR)  --  Blazers shooting guard Allen Crabbe is progressing nicely from foot surgery.  Crabbe went through shooting and dribbling drills at the team's practice facility Wednesday as he works his way back.  Crabbe had surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot on May 11th.  The team expects him to be 100-percent for training camp.  Crabbe averaged 10.7 points and shot 44.4-percent from beyond the arc in 79 games last season.

(Keizer, OR)  --  The Hops piled up 25 hits as they destroyed the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 17-2, at Volcanoes Stadium.  Daulton Varsho finished 5-for-6 with a homer, a double, two runs and five RBI.  Eudy Ramos and Yan Sanchez also homered in the win.  The Hops visit the Spokane Indians today, while the Volcanoes travel to play the Everett AquaSox.



(Salem, OR)  --  The Hillsboro Hops scored four runs in the eighth to beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-3 in a Northwest League game in Salem.  Diamondbacks first base prospect Eudys Ramos hit a two-run double in the eighth.  Ramos had three hits to boost his average to .321.  The Hops improved to 11-and-9.  The Volcanoes dropped to 8-and-12.



(Tualatin, OR)  --  The Timbers will be short-handed when they host the Chicago Fire tonight.  Captain Liam Ridgewell is likely out for six to eight weeks with a quad injury.  Right back Alvas Powell and winger Darren Mattocks have left Portland to play with the Jamaica National Team.  Portland is 7-and-7 and 5.  Chicago leads the MLS with an 11-and-3 and 4 record.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers held their initial NBA Summer League workout with first-round picks Zach Collins and Caleb Swanigan participating.  The roster includes guard R.J. Hunter, who was a Celtics' 2015 first-round selection, and small forward Jordan Adams, who was a Grizzlies' 2014 first-round choice.  The Blazers will open play against Utah on Sunday.  All games are In Las Vegas.
