(Undated)  -- Number-seven Stanford and number-19 Oregon will meet in a showdown Saturday in Eugene to open Pac-12 play.  Oregon State will host Arizona in its conference opener Saturday.  Portland State will face Montana State at Hillsboro Stadium in a Big Sky opener.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers fell behind early, but rallied to top the Columbus Crew 3-2 at Providence Park in Portland.  The victory moved the Timbers into a tie with Los Angeles FC for third place in the MLS Western Conference with 47 points.  The Timbers will have little time to celebrate the victory as they play Saturday at Minnesota.



(Houston, TX)  --  Robinson Cano went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Mariners shut out the Astros 9-0 in Houston.  Kyle Seager, Mitch Haniger and Guillermo Heredia homered for Seattle.  Casey Lawrence allowed one hit over three innings to get the win as the M's improved to 84-and-68.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers have reached a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Performance Health and its pain reliever Biofreeze.  Biofreeze patches will adorn Portland jerseys.  The Blazers are the 24th NBA team to feature an advertising patch on its uniforms.
 



(Arlington, TX)  --  Erasmo Ramirez is set to take the mound for the Mariners as they open a three-game series with the Rangers tomorrow in Arlington.  Texas plans to counter with Connor Sadzeck.  The M's trail Oakland by seven games for the final AL wild card spot.



(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are seeking their first win as they take on the Cowboys Sunday in their home opener.  Seattle has come up short in its first two games, while Dallas is off to a 1-and-1 start.  The Seahawks will look to avoid their first 0-and-3 start since 2002.



On the prep volleyball floor last night, #2 Crook County and third-ranked Ridgeview both scored league wins as the Cowgirls got out of Hood River with a 3-2 win, and the Ravens shutout Redmond 3-zip.

 

In 4A action, Sisters remains undefeated at 5-and-0 and in first place in the Oregon West Conference as the Outlaws snatched a 3-1 win at Stayton. Madras, meantime, lost its league opening match at Corbett, 3-zip.

Elsewhere, La Pine lost to Creswell in 3-games, and Culver blanked Colton, 3-to-nothing.

 

Tonight in the 6A new Mountain Valley League, #2 Summit travels to West Salem. 7th ranked Bend plays at Sprague with both teams tied for 2nd place in conference play. And, Mt. View visits South Salem.

 

In Girls non-league Soccer, Mt. View was a 3-1 winner at Lebanon.  Central beat Redmond, 5-to-1. Sisters lost 2-zip at Stayton. Today, La Pine hosts Pleasant Hill in a non-league match.

 

On the boy’s side…Crook County got by Lebanon 3-2, and Stayton blanked Sisters 7-zip. And, La Pine and Creswell played to a 1-1 draw yesterday.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Brigham Young forward Payton Dastrup has transferred to Oregon State.  The Beavers hope to have the 6-foot-10 Dastrup eligible for this season, bringing their roster to 14.  He averaged 2.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 56 games with BYU.  He was a four-star recruit from Mesa, Arizona Mountain View High in 2014 and spent the next two years on a church mission in Panama.



(Kansas City, MO)  --  The Chiefs released former Oregon cornerback Arrion Springs from the practice squad.  He made 13 tackles in the preseason, but was waived during the 53-man roster cuts before being added to the practice squad.  He had 137 tackles and two interceptions in four years with the Ducks.



(Houston, TX)  --  Five pitchers limited the Mariners to six hits in a 7-0 loss to the Astros in Houston.  Josh James pitched into the sixth inning for the Astros to outduel Seattle starter Mike Leake, who fell to 10-and-10.  Robinson Cano had three hits for Seattle in defeat.  The M's have dropped two of their last three.



(Houston, TX)  --  The Mariners and Astros finish their three-game series tonight in Houston.  Seattle will start Roenis Elias, while the 'Stros send Dallas Keuchel [[ KYE-kull ]] to the mound.  The Mariners are seven games out of the second AL wild card spot with 11 games left.  Their elimination number is down to five.



(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are looking ahead to Sunday's home opener against the Cowboys.  Seattle is off to an 0-and-2 start after road losses at Denver and Chicago.  The Seahawks are playing five of their first seven games on the road.  Dallas beat the Giants Sunday night to even its record at 1-and-1.



(Seattle, WA)  --  Safeco Field is getting a facelift.  The King County Council is approving 135-million-dollars in public money to renovate the 19-year-old stadium.  The funding package passed by a 5-to-4 vote.  The Mariners were initially seeking 180-million as part of a 25-year extension with the Public Facilities District.

(San Antonio, TX)  --  Former Oregon State center Drew Eubanks has signed a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs.  Eubanks left the Beavers after his junior season but went undrafted in 2018.  The 6-foot-10 Eubanks averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds last season.  He is a Troutdale native and was impressive in the NBA Summer League.
 



(Chicago, IL)  --  Russell Wilson threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes, but it wasn't enough as the Seahawks lost 24-17 to the Bears in Chicago.  Wilson connected with Tyler Lockett and Will Dissly, but was sacked six times and also threw a pick-six.  Seattle dropped to 0-and-2.



(Houston, TX)  --  The Mariners and Astros play the second of their three-game series tonight in Houston.  Mike Leake takes the mound for Seattle and Josh James for the 'Stros.  The M's are seven games behind the Athletics for the second AL wild card.  Their elimination number is six.



(Houston, TX)  --  Rookie Daniel Vogelbach delivered a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning to lift the Mariners to a 4-1 win over the Astros in Houston.  Ryan Cook came away with the win after starter Wade Miley allowed one run in five-and-a-third.  Seattle has won four of its last five.



We rewind to Friday Night under the lights with the Prep Football scoreboard where the Bend Lava Bears won a thriller on the road beating North Medford in overtime, 29-28. Summit bounced back from last week’s loss to Grants Pass and throttled Newberg, 53-39. Grants Pass snatched its second win in the high desert in as many weeks as the Cavemen outscored Mt. View, 49-41.

In the 5A class…both Ridgeview and Redmond fell on the road as Ashland defeated the Ravens, 51-40 and North Eugene doubled up the Panthers, 20-to-10.

28-6…Crook County edged Sisters, 35-32….Gervais thrashed Culver,
46-7, and in 8-man ball, Butte Falls runs past North Lake, 46-10 and Gilchrist lost at home to Powers, 58-6.
 



(Houston, TX) --  Alejandro Fuenmayor scored the lone goal for the Timbers in their 4-1 loss to the Dynamo in Houston.  Portland is currently tied with the Sounders for fifth in the West with 44 points.  The Timbers will look to bounce back against Columbus Crew SC on Wednesday.
 



(Undated)  --  Justin Herbert threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns as number-19 Oregon took down San Jose State 35-22 at Autzen Stadium.  In Reno, Oregon State made a late rally but came up just short as it fell to Nevada 37-35.  The Ducks improved to 3-and-0, while the Beavers dropped to 1-and-2 on the season.  On Saturday, Oregon will host seventh-ranked Stanford and Oregon State will host Arizona as both teams open Pac-12 play.



(Houston, TX)  --  The Mariners return to the field tonight to open a three-game series with the Astros at Minute Maid Park.  Wade LeBlanc will get the start for Seattle, while Houston plans to counter with Framber Valdez.  The M's are 82-and-67, which trail the first-place Astros by 12 games in the AL West.



(Anaheim, CA)  --  Mitch Haniger had an RBI double and Daniel Vogelbach homered for the Mariners as they fell to the Angels 4-3 in Anaheim.  Nick Vincent was charged with the loss as the M's fell seven-and-a-half games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.  Seattle had its three-game winning streak snapped.



(Chicago, IL)  --  The Seahawks hit the field tonight to face the Bears in a Monday Night showdown at Soldier Field.  Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season after coming up short in week one.  Veteran linebacker Mychal Kendricks will make his debut with Seattle after being released by the Browns last month.  Kendricks was suspended after he plead guilty to insider trading last week, however he has been granted permission to play until his appeal is heard.



EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Justin Herbert threw for 309 yards and three
touchdowns and Oregon beat San Jose State.

Freshman Cyrus Habibi-Likio scored on both of his carries and
Johnny Johnson III caught a pair of touchdown passes to help Oregon
win its 23rd straight nonconference game at Autzen Stadium.

Josh Love completed 15 of 31 passes for 238 yards and a score for
San Jose State (0-3).

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State will attempt to snap a 20-game road losing streak when it plays Nevada tomorrow in Reno.  First-year Beavers coach Jonathan Smith said he would wait until close to game time to announce whether Conor Blount or Jake Luton would start at quarterback.  The last time OSU played at Nevada, Smith was the starting quarterback in a 28-13 Ducks' win in 1999.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey resigned last week after 24 years and taking the Beavers to three College World Series championships.  But his new contract as senior associate athletic director has a reassignment provision.  That clause permits Casey to coach the OSU baseball team again if he requests by June 1st, 2019.



(Anaheim, CA)  --  Nelson Cruz connected for a three-run homer as the Mariners handled the Angels 8-2 in Anaheim.  His 36th of the year staked Seattle to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning.  Mike Leake pitched seven innings of one-run ball for the win.



(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks have an extra day to prepare as they get set to play the Bears on Monday Night Football in Chicago.  It's the second straight road game for Seattle, which lost at Denver in Week One.  The Bears are also 0-and-1.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Padres jumped out to a five-run lead over the Mariners and held on for a 5-4 victory in Seattle.  Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager homered for Seattle.  Wade LeBlanc took the loss, but three of the five runs off him were unearned.  The Mariners committed three errors.  Seattle is 5-and-10 in its last 15 games to fall nine-and-a-half games behind Oakland for the second AL wild-card berth.

(Corvallis, OR)   --  Four-star defensive end Addison Gumbs has transferred from Oklahoma to Oregon State.  Gumbs opted to transfer from the Sooners after suffering a season-ending knee injury.  He was a U.S. Army All-American and was ranked the number nine defensive end in the 2017 high school class.  He will be eligible to play in 2019.

(Eugene, OR)  --  The Eugene Emeralds scored two runs in the ninth to beat Spokane 3-2 to win the Northwest League championship.  The walk-off run came home on a balk.  The Emeralds went 5-and-0 in the post-season, sweeping Hillsboro and Spokane.

La Pine is just south of campus at Gilchrist to face Paisley, and Gilchrist. Central Christian of Redmond plays at Chiloquin, while North Lake hosts Trinity Lutheran.

On the girls soccer turf, it’s the battle of the ‘views’ with Ridgeview taking on Mt. View. Crook County jumping up to the 5A level greets 3A La Pine girls today at 5. Sisters, like its volleyball team is also at Woodburn.

On the boy’s side, Summit meets Madras, Ridgeview visits Crescent Valley, Sisters hosts Woodburn, and La Pine travels to Jefferson, southeast of Salem.

Week-2 of College football in the books and this week’s Coach’s poll has Alabama, Clemson number one, and two. Georgia, Ohio State and Oklahoma make up the top-5.

Both Stanford and Washington move up a notch as the Cardinal are ranked 9th and the Huskies 10th. Oregon with its big win over Portland State jump up to #20 in the land. Oregon hosts San Jose State on Saturday. Boise State is up to #17. USC at #22 and 2-and-0 Arizona State is ranked 23rd.

(Spokane, OR)  --  The Eugene Emeralds are one win away from winning the Northwest League baseball championship.  Eugene won 4-0 last night in Spokane.  The Emeralds swept the two games in Spokane in the best-of-five championship series.  The series shifts to Eugene tonight.

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners resume their homestand tonight after having Monday off.  They host the Padres in the first of a two-game Interleague series at Safeco Field.  Marco Gonzales starts for Seattle, while San Diego sends Bryan Mitchell to the mound.  The M's lost two-of-three to the Yankees over the weekend.



(Renton, WA)  --  Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin could be out a while.  ESPN reports he has a partial Grade 2 tear of the MCL in his right knee.  Baldwin was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday's loss at Denver.  He did briefly return later in the half before being shut down for the day.  Baldwin did not have a catch.



(Corvallis, OR)  --  Pat Casey, who coached Oregon State to three baseball national championships, announced he is retiring.  He coached the Beavers for 24 years, including winning the College World Series in June.  The Beavers had 900 victories and six trips to the College World Series under his watch.  The 59-year-old Casey shed tears in a 30-minute retirement news conference.  Associate head coach Pat Bailey will serve as interim coach for the 2019 season.

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Beavers coach Jonathan Smith said he is still uncertain if quarterback Jake Luton would be available to start tomorrow against Southern Utah in Corvallis.  Luton suffered a concussion in the season opening loss at Ohio State.  He did practice some yesterday.  Conor Blount would start if Luton is not cleared.  Blount completed 12-of-19 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns against the Buckeyes.

(Hillsboro, OR)  --  The Hillsboro Hops season is over.  The Hops stranded runners at second and third in the ninth in a 3-2 home playoff loss to the Eugene Emeralds.  Hillsboro owned the best regular season record in the Northwest League, but was swept in the postseason.  Eugene advances to play the winner of the Everett and Spokane series in the finals.



(Denver, CO)  --  The preseason is over and it's time to play for real for the Seahawks.  Seattle kicks off the campaign Sunday against the Broncos in Denver.  The Seahawks will also play at Chicago a week from Monday.  The home opener is September 23rd when the Cowboys come calling.



(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will open a three-game series with the Yankees tonight.  James Paxton is scheduled to start for the M's, while New York counters with Masahiro Tanaka.  Seattle trails Oakland by five-and-a-half games for the final AL wild card berth.
 



On the high school volleyball courts tonight, both Bend and Summit are in Salem tonight as the #2 ranked Lady Lava Bears visit West Salem, and Summit plays at McNary. Mt. View is on its home floor hosting Sprague.

(Undated)  --  The Hillsboro Hops lost 3-2 at Eugene in the opener of a best-of-three Northwest League playoff series.  The series will continue tonight in Hillsboro at Ron Tonkin Field.  The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.  The Emeralds have eliminated Hillsboro from the postseason the past two years.



(Renton, WA)  --  Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas is done holding out.  He reported to the Seahawks yesterday and took part in practice.  Seattle wants to further evaluate his conditioning before committing to playing him in Sunday's opener at Denver.  ESPN reports the Seahawks declined a second-round pick from the Cowboys for Thomas, who has made it known his desire to play for Dallas.



(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners stay in Seattle to open a three-game series with the Yankees tomorrow.  James Paxton is scheduled to start for the M's, while New York counters with Masahiro Tanaka.  Seattle has alternated wins and losses in its last eight games.



(Renton, WA)  --  One-handed rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin will start in Week One for the Seattle Seahawks.  Coach Pete Carrol confirmed Wednesday Griffin will start in place of the injured K.J. Wright when they visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday.  Griffin was born with amniotic band syndrome, which did not allow the fingers on his left hand to fully develop.  He'll be joined in Seattle's starting defense by his twin, second-year cornerback Shaquill Griffin.



It’s the first full week of school in session again, and week-2 of Fall prep sports where on the Volleyball hardwood last night the 2-time defending 5A Champion, now turned Class 6A, and ranked #1 Bend Lava Bears defeated McNary 3-1.  

In the first cross-town clash, Summit downed Mt. View by the same 3-1 score. Bend and Summit off to 2-and-0 starts in the newly classified ‘Mountain Valley Conference.’

Meantime, the defending 4A champs, the Sisters Outlaws blanked Newport on the road, 3-zip. And, in non-league 3A play, Burns shutout La Pine, 3-games to none.

Outdoors on the Girl’s soccer field, Madras snuck past Mt. View, 1-nil. Crook County throttled Dallas, 9-to-nothing, and Newport edged Sisters, 1-zip.



(Corvallis, OR)  --  Quarterback Conor Blount is practicing with the first team as the Beavers are preparing to face Southern Utah Saturday in their home opener.  Starting Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton remains in concussion protocol.  He was injured on the Beavers' opening series last Saturday in the loss at Ohio State.



(Portland, OR) -- The Timbers will return home Saturday, meeting the Colorado Rapids at Providence Park.  Portland and Seattle are tied for fifth in the MLS West with 41 points.  Colorado is 11th with 24 points.



(Portland, OR)  --  Portland State will attempt to snap a 14-game losing streak on Saturday when it plays Oregon in Eugene.  The Vikings have lost 19 of their last 22 games and opened this season with a 72-19 loss to Nevada in Reno.



(Undated)  --  The Hillsboro Hops will play at Eugene tonight in the opener of the best-of-three Northwest League divisional playoffs.  Game two will be tomorrow night in Hillsboro.  If a game three is necessary, the Hops would host it Friday.  Hillsboro finished with a Northwest League best record of 51-and-25.  The Hops, who are a Diamondbacks farm club, had designated hitter Andy Yerzy and pitchers Josh Green and Matt Tabor selected to the league's post-season All-Star team.



(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners gave up four runs in the seventh inning and lost 5-3 to the Orioles at Safeco Field.  Adam Warren surrendered three runs without recording an out to take the loss.  Robinson Cano homered for Seattle, which has lost six of its last nine.  The M's are five-and-a-half games behind the A's for the second AL wild card.



(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners close out their three-game series with the Orioles tonight at Safeco Field.  Mike Leake will take the mound for Seattle, opposite Baltimore's Andrew Cashner.  The M's are third in the AL West at 77-and-62, nine games behind the first-place Astros.



(Seattle, WA)  --  A scuffle took place in the Mariners' clubhouse prior to last night's game.  Second baseman Dee Gordon got into a heated altercation with shortstop Jean Segura over an error Gordon committed in Monday's 2-1 win over the Orioles.  Multiple players began pushing and shoving each other before the incident eventually spilled outside the clubhouse.
 



(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are headed to Denver to face the Broncos in their season opener on Sunday.  Seattle will play three of its first four games on the road.  The Seahawks look to bounce back this season after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2011.



(Eugene, OR)  --  Summit High graduate and Oregon tight end Cam McCormick will miss the remainder of the season.  He broke his left leg in the Ducks' season opening victory over Bowling Green.  McCormick was a player with the Summit Storm when they won the state title in 2015.  Jacob Breeland is listed as the tight end starter on Oregon's latest depth chart.  Oregon will host Portland State Saturday with an 11 a.m. kickoff.

(Tallahassee, FL)  --  Willie Taggart bolted Oregon after only one season as the Ducks head coach to take the Florida State job.  Virginia Tech spoiled his Seminoles' debut, winning 24-3 in Tallahassee.  FSU committed five turnovers.  Virginia Tech players and fans mocked the Florida State Tomahawk Chop in the final seconds after humiliating the Seminoles.  Florida State fans were tweeting Fire Taggart en masse in the fourth quarter.



(Portland, OR)  --  The Trail Blazers have signed former Oregon State guard Gary Payton the Second, Cam Oliver and Chinanu Onuaku to training camp contracts.  Payton appeared in 23 games last season with the Lakers on a two-way contract.  Onuaku was a 2016 second-round pick of the Rockets and has appeared in six NBA games.  Oliver played in the G-League last season after being undrafted out of Nevada.
