Ducks & Beavers Baseball Tangle with Arizona Schools

This afternoon the Oregon Ducks begin a three-game series with #12 Arizona State. The Ducks carry a three-game win streak into the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 5. Meanwhile, the Oregon State Beavers play host to the Arizona Wildcats. The first pitch of their three-game series is set for 7.

Prep Baseball Preview

This afternoon on the high school baseball diamond Intermountain Conference play resumes when Caldera visits Mountain View and Redmond hosts Summit. Bend challenges Ridgeview in a conference bout.  In 3A baseball Sisters meets Elmira in a double header beginning at 2pm. Also, La Pine welcomes Pleasant Hill for a twin bill. 

NBA Playoff Recap

 Another team has punched their ticket to the second round of the NBA postseason.  The Boston Celtics downed the Atlanta Hawks 128-120 in Game Six to win their first round series 4-2.  The Boston duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum combined for 62 points to set up an Eastern Conference semifinal matchup with Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers.  NBA playoff action continues on Friday night with two Western Conference battles.  The Warriors will look to close out the Sacramento Kings in Game Six in San Francisco after beginning the series in an 0-2 deficit.  LeBron James and the Lakers are aiming to knock off Ja Morant and the second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies in L.A.

Seahawks Select Witherspoon, Smith-Njigba In First Round

The Seahawks have a new lockdown cornerback in town.  Seattle selected Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon with the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.  The team also added a big-time playmaker to line up opposite of DK Metcalf next season.  Seattle drafted Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.  The wideout recorded 1,698 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in three seasons spent with the Buckeyes.  The Seahawks are slated to have two more selections in the second round tonight.

Oregon's Gonzalez Selected In First Round Of NFL Draft

A former Oregon Duck was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.  Cornerback Christian Gonzalez was selected 17th overall by the New England Patriots.  Gonzalez recorded 50 tackles and four interceptions in his one season in Eugene after transferring from Colorado.  This marks the fourth straight season a former Oregon player has been taken in the first round.

OSU AD Suffers Medical Event

(Corvallis, OR) -- Oregon State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes experienced a medical event Saturday night while attending a Fresno State Awards presentation in Fresno, California. He's being treated at a local hospital and reported to be in stable condition. Details of what happened haven't been released.

Prep Baseball Roundup

Today Madras hosts Estacada in Tri-Valley Conference action. Also, Crook County visits The Dalles in a league contest. The first pitch is at 4:30. Tomorrow Intermountain Conference play resumes with Mountain View hosting Caldera and Ridgeview entertaining Bend. Summit welcomes Redmond tomorrow.

College Baseball Recap

The Oregon Ducks secured a two games to one series win over Cal on the road. Oregon captured a 9-3 win yesterday including 14 hits. The Ducks return tomorrow when they host Gonzaga. Elsewhere the Oregon State Beavers dropped two games to the Sun Devils in phoenix including a 12-10 loss yesterday.

Major League Baseball Roundup

The Mariners dropped their home series finale.  Seattle fell 7-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals at T-Mobile Park. The Athletics dropped their road series finale.  Oakland fell 5-2 to the Texas Rangers in Arlington.  The Giants had a clutch hit in the bottom of the eighth to beat the New York Mets 5-4 at Oracle Park.

NBA Playoff Recap

Three teams are on the brink of elimination in the NBA playoffs.  The Timberwolves avoided a four-game sweep by pulling out a 114-108 overtime win over the Denver Nuggets in Minneapolis.  The Knicks edged closer to a series win after defeating the Cavaliers 102-93 to take a 3-1 series lead.  The Celtics are in a similar position after knocking off the Atlanta Hawks 129-121 to take a 3-1 lead.  The defending NBA champion Warriors responded with another big win, defeating the Sacramento Kings 126-125 to even the series at two games apiece.  The NBA playoffs continue on Monday, with the Lakers hosting the Memphis Grizzlies for Game Four and the Milwaukee Bucks visiting the Heat for Game Four.  Los Angeles and Miami both lead their respective series 2-1

Kraken Host Avalanche For Game Three Tonight

The Kraken are looking to bounce back in their first round Stanley Cup playoff series.  Seattle hosts the Colorado Avalanche tonight at Climate Pledge Arena.  The Kraken are now trailing the series 2-1 after losing Game Three 6-4 at home.  Jaden Schwartz notched a pair of goals in Saturday's loss.  Philipp Grubauer allowed five goals and made 28 saves in net.  Seattle is hoping to rebound after two straight losses to Colorado in the series. 

Prep Baseball Schedule

Today on the prep baseball diamond Crook County welcomes Estacada while Madras visits Molalla. Tomorrow Intermountain Conference play heats up with Summit playing Mountain View and Bend hosting Redmond. Also Caldera visits Ridgeview tomorrow.

Bend Invite Tees Off Today

On the links today the girls from Bend, Caldera, La Pine, and Mountain View all square off at the Bend country club for the Bend invite. Tee time is scheduled for 1 pm. 

College Baseball Recap

The Oregon Ducks took a 2-1 series win over 7th-ranked Stanford including an 8-1 win on Saturday. The Ducks have today off before visiting the Portland Pilots tomorrow. Meantime for the Beavers baseball club extended their winning streak to 8 games as they swept USC. Oregon State is back in action tomorrow when they host Seattle.

Mariners Sweep Rockies

The Mariners finished off a sweep in their home series.  Seattle edged the Rockies 1-0 at T-Mobile Park.  Luis Castillo dominated on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out nine over seven innings.  Paul Sewald notched his fourth save in relief.  Jarred Kelenic plated the game's lone run in the sixth inning.  The M's improved to 8-and-8.  Seattle starts a home series with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight and sends right-hander Chris Flexen to the hill.  

MLS Roundup

The Timbers picked up a big win over the Sounders.  Portland defeated Seattle 4-1 on Saturday at Providence Park.  Dairon Asprilla, Nathan Fogaca, Jaroslaw Niezgoda and Juan David Mosquera all found the back of the net in the victory.  Raul Ruidiaz scored the lone goal for the Sounders in the 58th minute.  Seattle is third in the Western Conference with 16 points, while Portland sits ninth in eight points.  

Prep Golf: Summit Girls Host Summit Invite

The Summit girls team is hosting the Summit Invite this morning at Aspen Lakes Golf Course. Bend, Caldera, La Pine, and Mountain Ciew will square off. Meantime the Bend boys will be at the Oregon Coast at the Bandon classic.

Trail Blazers Blown Out By Warriors

The Trail Blazers ended their season with a blowout loss.  Portland fell 157-101 to the Golden State Warriors at the Moda Center.  Skylar Mays scored a team-high 21 points and dished out 12 assists in the loss.  Rookie Shaedon Sharpe chipped in with 18 points.  The Blazers surrendered an NBA-record 55 points to Golden State in the first quarter.  Portland closes the season at 33-and-49 and missed the playoffs.

MLS Roundup

The Sounders and Timbers came away with different results over the weekend.  Seattle blanked St. Louis City SC 3-0 on Saturday at Lumen Field.  Josh Atencio and Raul Ruidiaz both scored goals in the victory.  The Sounders are now first in the Western Conference with 16 points.  Meanwhile, Portland fell 1-0 to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at BC Place.  The Timbers slipped to 12th in the West with five points.  

Winterhawks Advance in WHL Playoffs

The Portland Winterhawks punched their ticket to the second round of the WHL playoffs after beating Everett four games to one. They’ll play Kamloops on Friday.

Mariners Fall To Angels In Series Opener

The Mariners opened their home series with a loss.  Seattle fell 7-3 to the Los Angeles Angels at T-Mobile Park.  George Kirby was charged with the loss after allowing four runs over four-and-a-third innings of work.  Eugenio Suarez had a pair of hits and drove in two runs in the loss.  The M's went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position as they dropped to 1-and-4.  Seattle sends right-hander Luis Castillo to the hill tonight.  
 

Trail Blazers Visit Grizzlies Tonight

The Trail Blazers are paying a visit to Ja Morant and the Grizzlies.  Portland takes on Memphis tonight at the FedEx Forum.  The Blazers come off a 107-105 win over the Timberwolves and snapped a five-game losing skid.  Rookie Shaedon Sharpe scored 27 points in the victory over Minnesota.  Matisse Thybulle, Kevin Knox the Second, Cam Reddish and Trendon Watford are all listed questionable for tonight's game.  Portland sits at 33-and-45.  
 

Seahawks Signs Center Evan Brown

The Seahawks are making another move in NFL free agency.  Seattle announced it signed center Evan Brown on Monday.  Brown played 14 games and made 12 starts for the Detroit Lions last season.  The 26-year-old offensive lineman played mostly at right guard, but the Seahawks are looking to replace starting center Austin Blythe, who retired last month.  Brown started 12 games at center for the Lions in 2021.  

Kraken Crush Coyotes

The Kraken rolled to a dominant win on home ice.  Seattle crushed the Arizona Coyotes 8-1 at Climate Pledge Arena.  Jared McCann scored a pair of goals, while Jordan Eberle and Carson Soucy also lit the lamp in the first two periods.  Will Borgen, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Morgan Geekie and Ryan Donato all tallied third period scores.  The Kraken improved to 42-26-and-8 and sit fourth in the Pacific Division with 92 points.  Seattle visits the Vancouver Canucks tonight.  

UConn Defeats San Diego State To Win NCAA National Championship

The UConn Huskies are claiming their fifth NCAA men's basketball National Championship.  The fourth-seeded Huskies defeated fifth-seeded San Diego State 76-59 in the title game in Houston.  Adama Sanogo led the charge with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.  The junior forward was named Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.  UConn fended off a late rally from the Aztecs as the team won all its tournament games by double digits.  Keshad Johnson scored 14 points in the losing effort.  SDSU shot just 32.2-percent from the floor in the program's first ever appearance in a National Championship game.
