Mariners are Holding On

SPORTS 8-29-25

MLB:

The Giants beat the Cubs 4 – 3 to get the series sweep of Chicago. Willy Adames homered twice. Jung Hoo Lee had the walk off base knock to get San Francisco to 66 – 68 with Baltimore coming to Oracle Park for a weekend series.

Seattle starts the day two games behind Houston for the AL West lead and holding onto the last wild card spot. It’s the start of a weeklong road trip, beginning today in Cleveland. First pitch at 4:10.

 

CFB:

Game week for the Ducks and Beavers.

7th ranked Oregon welcomes FCS 2nd ranked Montana State tomorrow afternoon. The Ducks are almost four touchdown favorites. Coverage starts at 11, kick-off at 1 here on KBND.

Oregon State opens the season against former Pac 12 opponent Cal tomorrow night. The Beavers are favored by about a field goal. Kick off at 7:30.

 

Washington State has Idaho in Pullman for the Battle of the Palouse. Kick off at 7. The Cougars are getting 13. 5 points over the Vandals.

Washington gets a visit from Colorado State. Kickoff at 8. The Huskies are picked to win by over three touchdowns.

 

Local:

High School football tonight 2nd ranked Summit welcomes Sprague, Ridgeview hosts Woodburn, and Caldera has number five ranked Thurston visiting. 3rd ranked Mountain View is on the road at Springfield, Redmond visits McNary, Crook County plays Hood River Valley and Bend High will be in action. Madras, Sisters, Culver open their season tonight, too.

MLB:

Eugenio Suarez homered and Brian Woo was nails again, although he snapped his club record of 25 straight starts going six innings, after exiting going 5.2 but he did enough to earn his 12th win and the Mariners took two of three from the Padres. Seattle’s 4 – 3 win keeps them in the last wild card spot and 1.5 out of first in the division.  Next up a road trip starting in Cleveland tomorrow.

 

CFB:

Game week for the Ducks and Beavers.

Ducks running back Dakorien Moore and corner back Ify Obidegwu have been named to the Shaun Alexander Award Watch List for Freshman of the year.

7th ranked Oregon welcomes FCS 2nd ranked Montana State Saturday afternoon here on KBND.

Head coach Dan Lanning said he’s excited to see new team leaders emerge this season.

Oregon State opens the season against former Pac 12 opponent Cal on Saturday Night.

 

NFL:
The Seahawks listed their 17-player practice squad on Wednesday, a group of players who were waived or released by Seattle a day earlier to get the roster to 53 players.

Two of their 2025 draft picks made the squad including former Oregon State running back Damien Martinez.

San Francisco will not be trading wide receiver Juaun Jennings who the team confirmed has requested to be dealt.

49ers at Seahawks to open the season September 7th.

 

The Hillsboro Hops start playing in their new stadium next summer. Opening night will be April 7th against the Spokane Indians. Their first six games will be at home. The Hops will play 132 total games in the Northwest League in 2026.

College Football Preview

SPORTS 8-27-25

MLB:

Seattle spotted the Padres 5 runs in the first, took the lead back with a 6 run 5th but then gave it up for good allowing 2 runs in the 6th. Eugenio Suarez and Randy Arozerena each had 3 run homers. The Mariners are tied with the Yankees for the last wild card spot. They’re a game and a half out of first place. The Ms go for the series win today at 1:10.

San Francisco beat the Cubs 5 - 2. Game 2 of the series is at 6:45.

 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Week one of the college football season has arrived. Number seven Oregon will host Montana State to open their campaign. The Ducks have won 34 straight non-conference home games entering the contest. Oregon State will play former Pac-12 foe Cal at home. The Beavers are 37 and 40 all-time against the Golden Bears.

NFL:
Cut Day.

Seattle Wide Receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling was among the notable names dropped as the Seahawks named their 53-man roster. The receiver is owed 3-million dollars in guaranteed money. Former Oregon State running back Damien Martinez was among two draft picks not to make the roster.

 

San Francisco loaded up both lines but will be tight at line backer and safety. They will also just have Mac Jones to back up QB Brock Purdy. 
49ers play the Seahawks September 7th.

 

WNBA:

Portland's new WNBA team has its first general manager. The Fire named Vanja Cernivec the first GM in team history. Cernivec has been the vice president of basketball operations for the Golden State Valkyries since July 2024, before their first WNBA season. Her 12 years of professional basketball experience include two years as an international scout with the Chicago Bulls. She will officially join Portland on September 15.

OSU WR Clemons Out For Season

The Oregon State football team lost a play maker for the year.  Beavers wide receiver Darrius Clemons will not play this season after rupturing his Achilles, he announced on social media.  Clemons caught 25 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns last season, his first with OSU.  The Beavers will begin the regular season Saturday at home against former Pac-12 foe Cal.

 

The Oregon football team is reportedly adding a former star to its staff.  According to The Oregonian, former Duck safety Verone McKinley The Third is joining the team's recruiting staff.  McKinley had 167 total tackles and 11 interceptions over four years in Eugene before a brief career in the NFL.  Oregon will begin this season Saturday at home against Montana State.

MLB:

The Mariners’ Cal Raleigh hit two-home runs to tie and set the record for the most home runs by a catcher in a season with numbers 48, and 49 to help Seattle in the 11 – 4 victory over the As yesterday. The Ms are 2 games out of first place and tied with the Yankees in the wild card race.

The Padres visit for a Vedder Cup series starting tonight at 6:40.

San Francisco came back to beat Milwaukee 4 – 3 yesterday after Heliot Ramos knocked in the go-ahead runs with a two RBI single. The Giants return home to face the Chicago Cubs starting tomorrow.

 

NFL:
It’s final decision time. Cut down to the 53-player roster is tomorrow at 1 pm.
Seattle has questions on the Running back depth chart.

San Francisco has questions at wide receiver and the defensive backfield.

Oregon Cascades 100 Ultra this Weekend

SPORTS 8-22-25

MLB:

San Francisco fell to San Diego 8 - 4. The Padres get the series win with the loss giving pitcher Justin Verlander a 1 – 10 record on the season. The Giants are on to Milwaukee to face the red-hot Brewers starting tonight at 5:10.

The Mariners will try to stop the five-game losing streak and gain some momentum for a playoff push back in Seattle tonight against the pesky Athletics. First pitch at 7:10.

NFL:
It’s the final weekend of preseason games.
Seattle has been holding joint practices… and getting into brawls with Green Bay this week. The Seahawks play the Packers tomorrow at 1.

San Francisco goes against the Chargers starting tomorrow at 5:30

LOCAL

Trail runners from across the country are converging on Bend and Sisters this weekend for the Oregon Cascades 100 Ultra.

The 100-mile race kicks off at Pacific Crest Middle School, with competitors facing over 10,000 feet of elevation gain before descending rugged single-track into the Sisters region.

The 50-miler starts from Swampy Lakes Sno Park.

Both courses end at Sisters Middle School.

Next week…

Mt. Bachelor is set to host the fifth annual Red Line Rally on Saturday the  30th, drawing the region’s top downhill bikers—from rising youngsters to pros. Riders will launch tricks, vying for category prizes.

Unique honors highlight leading female and youth performances. Full details and the complete schedule are available on the Mt. Bachelor website. Spectators are invited!

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Oregon State’s shaking things up in Corvallis, teaming up with Blueprint Sports as their go-to agency for helping Beaver athletes navigate name, image, and likeness deals. Basically, Blueprint is stepping in to run the show for everything NIL—bringing in new sponsorships, fan interactions, and handling partnerships. They even scooped up Dam Nation Collective, which used to be the main crew handling this stuff. Kyle Bjornstad is taking the wheel as General Manager, with Justin Johnson handling NIL business. The idea? Give OSU athletes and fans more ways to connect, and open up some fresh revenue streams in what is a quickly changing scene.

At the same time…

Another day, another preseason watchlist.

This is for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which is given to the nation's top offensive player with ties to the state of Texas.

Oregon State's Salahadin Allah at running back and Offensive Lineman Van Wells have been named to the watch list. Both players hail from the Lone Star State.

MLB:

The Mariners were blown of Philadelphia 11 – 2 yesterday. The sweep by the Phils makes it 5 straight Ls for Seattle. The bright spot is Houston has lost four in a row so the Ms still trail by a game and a half for the Division lead but fall a half game behind Boston into the last wild card spot with a 2 and a half game lead over Kansas City.

Today is travel day then back home to T-Mobile tomorrow.

San Francisco only managed a single score again in an 8 – 1 loss to the Padres last night. In a scary moment, pitcher Landen Roupp was carted off the field after he was hit by a line drive in the third inning.

Manager Bob Melvin said Roupp has a sprained left knee and was being sent back to San Francisco for an MRI.

The Giants have a matinee at 1:10 to finish the four-game series in San Diego.

Ducks Finish Fall Camp

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein didn’t exactly give a stellar report for his offense as the Ducks broke fall camp yesterday.  He said the squad was quote ‘getting there’ end quote when asked if they had met the standard he wanted to see. Coach Stein said his three quarterbacks are also continuing to compete to the QB1.

Another day, another preseason watchlist…

Oregon State's Maalik Murphy was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, an honor presented annually to the top senior or upperclassman quarterback who is on track to graduate with their class.

Murphy is in his first season at Oregon State. The quarterback transferred from Duke, where he threw for a program-record 26 touchdowns in 2024. He ranked 13th nationally for passing scores and 22nd for total yardage.

Oregon State's Dylan Black, Kobe Singleton and Noble Thomas Jr. were named to the Comeback Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances.

 

MLB:

San Francisco fell 5 – 1 to the Padres last night. Game three of the four game series continues tonight at 6:40.

In Philadelphia, The Mariners’ Bryce Miller’s return to the mound ended up with four earned runs on four hits in five innings. He was off the hook though when the Ms tied it up at 4 all in the 7th, but a two-run go-ahead homer in the 8th gave the Phils the second win of the series. Seattle will try to avoid the sweep in the getaway game that starts this morning at 10:05 our time. They stay a game and a half out of first place and slide a half game behind the Yankees for the first wild card, in a tie with Boston.

 

LOCAL:

West Coast League Baseball has announced its first and second team players, and honorable mentions for the 2025 season.

Bend Elks outfielder Jace Miller has been selected for the 1st Team.

Pitchers Erik Puodziunas and Simon Lemke were selected for the 2nd team.

1B Easton Amundson and Makoa Sniffen in the utility role get Honorable Mention.

It caps a season that saw the Elks win their first playoff game since 2015 and ended against Corvallis in the first round of the playoffs.

College Football Camps

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

In Corvallis, Oregon State finishes the last of camp today. Tight ends coach Will Heck met with the media yesterday after practice. The coach recently named to the 247 Sports 30 coaches under 30 list says all the tight ends will bring a different skill set to the Beavs’ offense.

 

Oregon defensive back Dillon Thieneman was voted first team Associated Press All American yesterday. The writers also gave the nod to running back Makhi Hughes as a second team offense AP All American.

Edge Matayo Uiagalelei is second team defense.

Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi told the media after practice yesterday he and the other defensive position coaches are focusing on improving the run defense. Coach Lupoi said the team gave up way too many rushing yards in the playoff loss to Ohio State.

The Ducks have shifted to their regular season morning practice schedule at

Autzen stadium now.

The Mariners got homeruns from Mitch Garver and Cole Young in the 7th inning to give the team a little life but the home team answered back with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning. Garver and Young added RBI singles in the 9th to make them a little more respectable but it sends the Ms to a statistical tie with the Red Sox and Yankees for the Wildcard spots, and remain a game and a half out of first place in the West.

Back at it today starting at 3:45.

 

San Francisco jumped out early on the Padres last night then held on to win 4 - 3. Rafael Devers, Wilmer Flores, and Heliot Ramos all homered in the first inning to account for all of the runs the Giants would need . Game 2 is today at 6:40.

The Sounders and Timbers will both be in action this week. Seattle will take the field Wednesday for the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup against Mexican side Puebla before hosting Sporting Kansas City on Sunday in regular season action. Portland will hit the road to take on San Diego FC on Saturday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was happier after this past Saturday’s scrimmage than he was last week. The coach liked what he saw out of the offense, but was pleased the defense made them work for a score.

Lanning’s other comments to the media included the need to stay focused on finishing camp strong before looking ahead to game week preparation against Montana State.

The Ducks are back at practice today.

The Beavers held a scrimmage Saturday to get the backups more game-like action. Coach Trent Bray said they wanted the opportunity to see where the team stood at depth at various positions.

Bray added the coaches like the progress of their projected starters in camp.

OSU practices today and tomorrow (Mon and Tue) before going into game week preparations for Cal later this week.

 

MLB:

San Francisco snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 7 – 1 win over Tampa Bay yesterday. But they start a series with the red-hot Padres beginning today. First pitch from San Diego is at 6:40.

 

Seattle lost 7 – 3 to the Mets last night in the Little League Classic played in Williamsport Pennsylvania. George Kirby took the loss.

Cal Raleigh hit his 47th home run. The Mariners are a game and a half behind Houston in the West, and are tied with Boston in the Wild Card standings. Next up is a trip to Philadelphia starting today at 3:45.

 

NFL:

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald had good things to say about quarterback Drew Lock following his performance against Kansas City in Seattle’s second preseason game. Lock looks to be the backup to Sam Darnold, and saw significant playing time against the Chiefs.

 

OSU WBB Announces Non-Conference Schedule

SPORTS 8-15-25

NBA:

The Trail Blazers open the 2025 – 26 season in Portland against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, October 22nd. It will be a big matchup with superstar guard Anthony Edwards and last year’s Western Conference Finalists visiting the Moda Center.

The Blazers will have 8 nationally televised games including a December 26th matchup against the Clippers on Amazon Prime Video.
 

MLB:

The Mariners slid further behind Houston for first place in the AL West after dropping the series finale against Baltimore yesterday. They scored 3 runs following a lengthy weather delay but came up short in the 5 – 3 final. Now Seattle tries to stop the 2-game skid and get right against the scuffling New York Mets. First pitch today is at 4:10.

 

San Francisco tries to stop their slide against Tampa today. The Giants are 3 games under .500. First pitch against the Rays is at 7:15

 

OSU WBB:

The Oregon State women's basketball team released its non-conference schedule. The Beavers will open the season November 7th at home against Corban, the first of six straight home games. OSU will renew its rivalry with Oregon in Eugene on December 3rd after the teams did not play last season.

 

MLS:

The Sounders and Timbers will continue their regular season slates this weekend. Seattle will battle Minnesota United FC on Saturday. The Sounders lost their first meeting with the Loons 3-2 at home in June. Also on Saturday, Portland will host FC Cincinnati. This will be the lone matchup between the clubs this season.

Blazers Sold!

SPORTS 8-14-25

NBA:

The Portland Trailblazers have a new owner. A deal was struck late Tuesday for the team to be purchased by Tom Dundon… the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team. Reports indicate Dundon and his group of investors plan to keep the team in Portland. The deal could likely take months to finalize by NBA owners. It was the wish of late owner Paul Allen to have his family sell both the Trail Blazers and Seattle Seahawks upon his death.

The franchise went up for sale earlier this year.

 

MLB:

San Francisco got clobbered by San Diego 11 – 1 yesterday to send them to their fifth straight loss. The Padres sweep basically sends the Giants into look to the future mode, as indicated by manager Bob Melvin’s post-game comments about giving regular players a day off, and seeing what the younger players can do. The Rays visit for a weekend series starting tomorrow.

Seattle’s bullpen and bats let down Logan Gilbert yesterday after he went 6.1 giving up 2 runs with six strikeouts. Baltimore walked it off in the bottom of the 9th after the Ms evened it up with 2 runs in the top half. The Mariners fall a game out of first place. The rubber match of the series is this morning starting at 10:05.

Oregon’s Matayo Uiagalelei and Emmanuel Pregnon are on the Lombardi Award watch list for football’s top lineman.

Oregon State Running backs coach Ray Pickering spoke to the media after practice touting the entire squad and in particular work horse running back Anthony Hankerson.

 

College Basketball

The Oregon and Gonzaga men's basketball teams will reportedly face off this winter. According to Jon Rothstein, the Ducks and Bulldogs will soon announce a matchup on December 21 in Portland. This would be the third all-time matchup between the teams, who have split the previous two.

 

MLB:

Seattle shut out Baltimore 1 - 0 yesterday making Josh Naylor’s first inning RBI stand up with George Kirby getting the win and Anthony Munoz picking up his 28th save. The series continues today at 3:35.

 

The Giants managed a first inning run and got no more losing 5 - 1 to San Diego last night. Robbie Ray gave up 4 runs in six innings in the loss. San Francisco tries to avoid the sweep with game three today starting at 12:45.

 

MLS:

The Timbers will be in action this weekend.  On Saturday, Portland will host FC Cincinnati.  This will be the lone matchup between the clubs this season.

 

Oregon CFB Rankings

College Football:

The writers agree with the coaches in ranking Oregon in their pre-season polls. The Ducks are also number 7 in the Associated Press Poll…just as in last week’s coaches poll. It’s the first time in a decade for top 10 preseason rankings in back to  back seasons. They started number 3 in the 2024 poll.

Oregon inside linebacker Bryce Boettcher, defensive back Dillon Thieneman and outside linebacker Matayo Uiagalelei were all named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award…given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.

The Giants fell 4 - 1 to San Diego in game one of their series in San Francisco dropping them a game below .500, 4.5 games out of the wild card.

 

Seattle and Cal Raleigh’s league-leading 45 home runs are in Baltimore to start a series with the Orioles. The red-hot Mariners are winners of 9 of their last 10 and a game out of first place behind the Astros. Ms vs Os first pitch at 3:35.

College Football:

Oregon State and Oregon held first scrimmages of Fall camp Saturday.

MLB:

The Mariners won their seventh game in a row.  Seattle completed a sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays with a 6-3 home win.  Cal Raleigh hit his 45th home run of the season, tying him with Johnny Bench for most by a catcher in a season. The Mariners will begin a road series against the Orioles on Tuesday.

 

The Giants were shutout at their home ballpark.  San Francisco lost to the Washington Nationals 8-0 at Oracle Park.  The Giants were limited to three hits and never had a runner in scoring position.  Justin Verlander recorded his 3,500th career strikeout in the setback. They host the San Diego Padres tonight.
 

NFL:

Seattle’s rookies made their mark in the opener against the Raiders. Quarterback Jalen Milroe rushed for 56 yards and threw for 102, including a 29-yard touchdown pass. Running back George Holani added 67 rushing yards, highlighted by a 23-yard burst. On defense, rookie safety Nehemiah Pritchett grabbed an interception in the first half The Seattle Seahawks are set to play their next preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers Saturday.

 

San Francisco’s rookies showed some bright spots during the preseason game with Denver Saturday.

 

MLS Roundup

The Timbers and Sounders both returned to MLS regular season play this weekend.  On Saturday, Portland lost to FC Dallas 2-0 on the road.  Maxime Crépeau failed to make a save in the setback.  Then, on Sunday, the Seattle picked up a 4-0 road win over the LA Galaxy.  Danny Musovski found the back of the net twice in the victory and Snyder Brunell scored the first goal of his career.

 

LOCAL:

The Bend Elks season has come to an end.  The Elks lost to the Knights 10 – 4 at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.

 

The Klamath Falls Falcons will play Bitterroot Montana for the Class-A Northwest Legion Title this morning at 10. K-Falls witll need to sweep Montana two games to claim the Regional title.

Another day, another preseason award list.
Oregon State's Maalik Murphy was named to the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Preseason Watch List - presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award.

Seattle got a 4 - 3 walkoff win in the 11th to get the sweep of the White Sox yesterday. The win moves the Mariners a game and a half behind Houston in the AL West and a game behind Boston. Tampa visits for a weekend series starting tonight at 6:40. 

The Giants are back home against Washington tonight. First pitch at 7:15.

Training Camp notes-
San Francisco continues joint practice sessions with Denver starting today leading up to Saturday’s preseason game with the Broncos.

 

MLS:
The Timbers and Sounders will resume their regular season schedule this weekend.  Portland will be on the road for a matchup with FC Dallas on Saturday.  This is the first of two meetings between the clubs this year.  On Sunday, Seattle will battle the LA Galaxy on the road.  This is the first of two games between Seattle and LA this year.

 

LOCAL:
Running:
The Haulin’ Aspen trail race is tomorrow. It’s a 2025 USA Track & Field (USATF) Oregon Mountain Trail Marathon and Half Marathon Championship. Top-level racing competition will be running west of Bend at Wanoga Sno Park.

The Elks have Corvallis in town for a West Coast League playoff game tonight. First pitch against the Knights is 6:35 at Vince Genna.

College Football:

Another day, another preseason award list.

Oregon State wide receiver Trent Walker was named to the Biletnikoff List on Wednesday which recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. Walker, a redshirt senior from Portland, is coming off one of the best seasons by a wide receiver in Oregon State history. He caught 81 passes, tied for the seventh most in program history, for 901 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Three Ducks landed on the Sporting News preseason All American Team: DB Dillon Thieneman made first team, RB: Makhi Hughes, Oregon and Center Iapani Laloulu made the 2nd team.

The Oregon football team's future schedules are reportedly clearing up.  The Ducks and Utah State will reportedly cancel future games set for 2027 in Eugene and 2028 in Logan.  The teams will maintain their currently-scheduled matchup in 2029 at Autzen Stadium.  The three-game series was scheduled in 2020.

 

 

MLB:

Seattle held off the White Sox 8-6 last night. Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor went deep. George Kirby struck out nine in six innings for the win.  The Mariners stay a game ahead of the Yankees in the second spot in the AL Wild Card. The Ms go for the sweep starting at 1:10 today.

 

San Francisco rallied for a dramatic 4-2 win over the Pirates. Dominic Smith delivered the go-ahead double in the ninth inning. Reliever Ryan Walker was clutch for San Francisco, striking out the side in the eighth, while Randy Rodríguez pitched a perfect ninth to secure his third save. With the victory, the Giants take the series two games to one and head home to face Washington tomorrow.

NFL:

Training Camp notes-

Seahawks QBs Drew Lock and rookie Jalen Milroe will get reps behind center tonight. Head Coach Mike Macdonald has signaled starters likely won’t pay in this first preseason matchup against the Raiders. 12s are expected to give former coach Pete Carroll a warm welcome in his return to Lumen Field. Although qb Geno Smith may not get as much applause after being asked to be traded during the offseason. New Seattle starting quarterback Sam Darnold isn’t expected to see any action when the game kicks off at 7 tonight.

The Timbers and Sounders wrapped up Phase One of the Leagues Cup on Wednesday.  Portland lost to América 5-3 in penalty kicks after tying 1-1 in regulation.  Ariel Lassiter scored the lone regulation tally for the Timbers.  The Sounders secured a 2-1 win over Tijuana in their game.  Osaze De Rosario scored in the 56th minute and Danny Musovski buried the game-winning goal in the 87th minute.

Doak Walker Candidates for the nation’s most outstanding Running Back include the Beavers’ Anthony Hankerson. The Oregon State senior was just put on the Walter Camp and Maxwell list also.


Ducks Running backs Makhi Hughes is also on the Walker list. He’s been recognized on several preseason lists himself. Oregon senior running back Noah Whittington is also a Doak Walker candidate.

Seattle got a solid outing from pitcher Brian Woo and Eugenio Suarez homered in the victory over the White Sox last night. The 8 - 3 win moves the Mariners into the second spot in the AL Wild Card.
San Francisco pounded Pittsburgh 8 – 1 yesterday to even up the three game series at a game apiece. Logan Webb picked up his 10th win on the year. The Giants moved back to .500 at 57 – 57. The rubber match against the Pirates starts this morning at 9:35.NFL:

Seahawks rookie Tory Horton is getting early hype for his receiving skills in practice from both veterans and coaches. Horton was a fifth round pick, but some are saying he could be the steal of the draft.49ers Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh is high on his crop of rookies. He expects many of them to get significant playing time Saturday against Denver.
 

MLS:

The Timbers and Sounders will play their final games of Phase One of the Leagues Cup tonight. Portland will play América in Austin, while Seattle takes on Tijuana at home. The clubs are tied for second place in the tournament standings with six points each entering the night.

Ducks Seventh In Coaches Poll

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Oregon came in at number 7 in the Preseason Coaches poll released yesterday. They’re the third-ranked Big 10 team behind Ohio State and Penn State…Washington also received votes.

 

Ducks running back Makhi Hughes and quarterback Dante Moore have landed spots on the preseason watch list for the 2025 Walter Camp Player of the Year award, announced yesterday. They're two of just 45 players nationwide recognized by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Oregon is among only eight schools with multiple honorees. For Hughes, it’s his second player of the year watch list this preseason—he’s also a candidate for the Maxwell Award and received preseason All-American honors. Fall practice is now underway for Hughes, Moore, and the rest of the Ducks.

Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson is also on the Camp Watchlist. The senior is starting his second season with the Beavers after running for 1,082 yards last year with 15 rushing touchdowns.  Ranking sixth all time in a single season at Oregon State. Hank is also on the Maxwell award list.

OSU’s Dylan Black was named to The Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List, an honor given to the nation's best long snapper. Black, a redshirt senior from Reno has played in 46 games at Oregon State and was a semifinalist for the Witten Man of the Year Award in 2024. 

 

MLB:

San Francisco gave up two runs in the ninth and lost 5 - 4 to Pittsburgh yesterday. Game 2 of the series with the Pirates starts at 3:40 today.

Tonight at T-Mobile Park, the Mariners host the White Sox for the first of a midweek three-game series. Seattle is just behind the Yankees for the second spot in the Wild Card. Brian Woo goes for the Ms, starting at 6:40.

San Francisco has signed veteran wideout Robbie Chosen. It’s the latest in a flurry of roster cuts and adds at the receiver position for the Niners...who have Denver visiting Saturday for their first of three preseason games.

The Mariners blanked the Rangers 6 - 0 last night to get a game lead in the last wild card spot over Texas. The Big Dumper blasted his 42nd homer. Cal Raleigh now has the most single-season home runs by a switch-hitting catcher in MLB history. Game 2 of the four game series is tonight at 7:10 in Seattle.

 

San Francisco traded outfielder Mike Yastrzemski to Kansas City at yesterday’s deadline. Today the Giants are in Queens, New York to try to snap their six game losing streak. First pitch against the Mets is 4:10

 

Soccer:

The Portland Timbers play Querétaro tomorrow night in match 2 of the group stage of the MLS vs MX LIGA League’s Cup tomorrow night at 8.

The Portland Thorns play Washington Saturday.

 

Local:
