Ridgeview Takes Down Mountainview 4-2

Yesterday the Ridgeview boys beat Mountain View 4-2 and Bend defeated Redmond 2-0. On the girl’s side, Mountain View blanked Ridgeview 1-0. The soccer state playoffs begin on November 2nd. The final soccer coaches polls were released yesterday as for the boys, Summit is ranked 2nd and Bend is 9th in the 5A class. Crook County ranked 5th in the 4A while Sisters placed 7th for the 3A. For the girl’s Caldera and Summit rank one and two in the 5A class.

Summit Boys and Girls Claim Cross Country District Championships

Yesterday was the Intermountain Conference district meet for boys and girls cross country and the Summit Storm earned both titles. With these wins, Summit has qualified for a state championship bid along with Bend High in both categories. The cross-country state championships are at Lane Community College on November 5th.

Pac-12 Men's Basketball Media Preseason Poll Released

The Pac-12 released the results of its annual preseason men's basketball media poll.  UCLA is the clear favorite with 26 first place votes, followed by Arizona and Oregon.  The Bruins are getting back four of their top seven scorers from last season.  Oregon State received the fewest amount of votes and was picked to finish 12th.  Washington State ranked eighth and Washington is projected to finish ninth in the poll.  

College Football Roundup

College football action continues this weekend.  Eighth-ranked Oregon hits the road to face Cal on Saturday afternoon.  The Ducks lead the Pac-12 at 6-and-1 and 4-and-oh in conference play.  Oregon State and Washington both enjoy the weekend off as the teams head into the bye week.  Washington State gets an early start to the week as it hosts Number-14 Utah on Thursday night.  The Cougars come off a bye week and sit at 4-and-3.

Trail Blazers Lose To Heat

 The Trail Blazers were handed their first loss of the season.  Portland lost to the Heat 119-98 at the Moda Center.  Damian Lillard scored 22 points, but left the game after suffering a right calf strain.  Rookie Shaedon Sharpe chipped in 15 points off the bench for the Blazers, who dropped to 4-and-1.  Portland hosts the Rockets tomorrow night.  Lillard said he'll likely miss the game against Houston, but hopes to play Wednesday. 

Summit Girl's Soccer Claim League Title

Yesterday on the high school soccer pitch the Summit girls claimed the Intermountain Conference Championship when they beat Caldera 2-1. The 5A playoffs begin next week. There are still some games to be played today as the Ridgeview girls visit Mountain View. For the boys, Mountain View visits Ridgeview and Bend hosts Redmond.

Trinity Lutheran & Central Christian Prepare for Volleyball Playoffs

The 1A state playoffs begin this afternoon. 12-seed Trinity Lutheran welcomes 21-seed Joseph today at 6pm and 14-seed Central Christian welcome 19-seed Arlington. The 5A state playoffs begin Saturday with Ridgeview visiting South Albany, Bend hosts Putnam, and Summit challenges La Salle Prep. 

Intermountain Conference Cross Country Districts Today

For high school runners today the 5A Intermountain Conference district championships are today beginning at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo. Also, the 4A Tri-Valley Conference district championships are held in Estacada this afternoon featuring Crook County and Madras. 

Kraken Defeat Sabres

The Kraken put on an offensive show in their return to home ice.  Seattle defeated the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 at Climate Pledge Arena.  Jamie Oleksiak, Morgan Geekie and Daniel Sprong all scored their first goals of the season in the victory.  Jared McCann and Matty Beniers also lit the lamp for the Kraken, who improved to 3-3-and-2.  Martin Jones stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced in net.  Seattle hosts the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow night. 

Trail Blazers Host Heat Tonight

The Trail Blazers are looking to stay undefeated with another game at home.  Portland hosts the Miami Heat tonight at the Moda Center.  The Blazers come off a 25-point win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday and improved to 4-and-oh.  Forward Justise Winslow is listed questionable for tonight with an ankle injury.  Gary Payton the Second, Trendon Watford and Olivier Sarr are all listed out.  Miami comes in at 1-and-3.  

Summit and Caldera Girls Clash for League TItle

In girl’s soccer, Summit visits Caldera for a match that will decide the Intermountain Conference. Caldera is ranked first in the state and Summit is #3. Also, Crook County hosts Madras. For the boys games, those sites are swapped.

Trail Blazers Beat Nuggets

The Trail Blazers are the final undefeated team left in the Western Conference.  Portland took down the Nuggets 135-110 at the Moda Center.  Damian Lillard scored a game-high 31 points and dished out eight assists.  Anfernee Simons also had a big game with 29 points and shot 7-of-12 from three-point range.  The Blazers improved to 4-and-oh and host the Heat tomorrow night.  In other team news, Lillard was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday.  

Will Richardson Named Preseason All PAC-12

Moving to college hoops, the PAC-12 conference released its preseason all-conference teams for men's and women’s basketball. For the Ducks, point guard Will Richardson earned all-conference honors after averaging 14.1 points and 3.6 assists last season. The Ducks Kel’el Ware and Quincy Gurrier were honorable mentions.

On the women’s side, Oregon's Te-Hina Paopao, Sedona Prince, and Endiya Rogers joined the Lady Beavs Talina Von Oelhoffen on the preseason all PAC-12 teams.

Oregon's Bo Nix Earns PAC-12 Honors

Oregon’s Bo Nix earned PAC-12 player of the week honors. Nix completed 22 of 28 passes for 283 yards against UCLA including 5 touchdowns. The Ducks' Alex Forsyth was named offensive lineman of the week. For the Beavers, Damien Martinez earned freshman of the week honors when he rumbled for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns. Also, Alex Austin was honored for his performance which included a pick-6 against Colorado.

Bears Blow Out Patriots On Monday Night

The Bears stormed into Foxboro and dismantled the Patriots 33-14 on Monday Night Football.  Justin Fields completed 13 of 21 passes for 179 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.  Fields also carried the ball 14 times for 82 yards and a score.  David Montgomery also found the end zone as he and Khalil Herbert each ran for 62 yards.  Mac Jones started the game under center for New England but was pulled after throwing an interception.  Bailey Zappe threw for 185 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.  Matthew Judon was a force on the defensive side of the ball, sacking the Bears quarterback two and a half times.  The Patriots are now 3-and-4, while the Bears' record improved to 3-and-4.

Ducks Take Down Bruins

The Oregon Ducks are now the number-eight team in the country after taking down number-15 UCLA 45-30 at Autzen Stadium on Saturday.  The Ducks opened up a big lead after scoring 28 points in the second quarter.  Oregon went into halftime with a 31-13 lead and kept the Bruins at a distance the rest of the way.  Bo Nix passed for 283 yards and five touchdowns in the victory.  Troy Franklin caught eight passes for 132 yards and two scores, while Bucky Irving had 107 rushing yards, 57 receiving yards, and a touchdown reception.  The Ducks improve to 6-and-1 overall and 4-and-0 in the PAC-12.  Oregon is at California this Saturday.

Summit Downs Mountain View. Prep Football Recap

Summit beat Mountain View 49-23 and Caldera edged Redmond 20-19. Sisters fell to Siuslaw 20-7. La Pine downed Burns 28-25 and on Saturday Crook County scorched Baker 48-31.

Trail Blazers Top Lakers To Stay Unbeaten

The Trail Blazers are still undefeated after topping the Lakers 106-104 in Los Angeles.  Damian Lillard led all scorers with 41 points for Portland.  Jerami Grant chipped in with 16 points in the win.  Josh Hart came within one point of recording a double-double after grabbing 16 rebounds.  The Blazers improved to 3-and-0, and they host the Nuggets tonight.
 

Winterhawks Pick Up First Loss

The Portland Winterhawks lost their first game of the season when they fell to Tri Cities 7-3. The Winterhawks are 7-1 and host Kelowna on Friday.

Portland Thorns Advance to NWSL Championship

The Portland Thorns have advanced to the National Women’s Soccer League Championship after getting past the San Diego Wave 2-1. The Thorns will play the Kansas City Current on Saturday for the league title.

Bend Dismantles Ridgeview 41-6. Prep Football Round-Up

In high school football from last night as Bend scorched Ridgeview 41-6. There is more action on the gridiron tonight as Summit visits Mountain View and Redmond hosts Caldera. Madras earned a forfeit win against The Dalles, and Sisters challenges Siuslaw. La Pine welcomes Burns. On Saturday Crook County plays Baker.

#10 Ducks Host #9 UCLA This Weekend

On Saturday the 10th ranked Oregon Ducks host #9 UCLA at 12:30. ESPN’s College GameDay will be in Eugene with guest picker, Oregon women’s basketball star, Sabrina Ionescu! You can listen to Ducks pregame coverage starting at 10:30 on 100.1 and 1110 KBND.

Trail Blazers Host Suns Tonight

Damian Lillard and the Trail Blazers play at home tonight.  Portland hosts the Phoenix Suns at the Moda Center.  The Blazers come off a 115-108 win over the Sacramento Kings in their season opener.  Jerami Grant finished with 23 points and eight rebounds in his Portland debut.  Guard Gary Payton II, center Olivier Sarr, and forward Trendon Watford are all listed out for tonight.  Phoenix comes in at 1-0. 

49ers Acquire McCaffrey From Panthers

Christian McCaffrey is heading back to the Bay.  ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers have acquired Pro Bowl running back Christian McCaffrey from the Panthers in exchange for draft picks.  McCaffrey played college ball at Stanford before being selected by Carolina with the eighth overall draft pick in 2017.  The 26-year-old has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons after earning Pro Bowl honors in 2019.  The NFL Network reports the Niners are sending Carolina a second, third and fourth round draft pick in 2023 and a fifth-rounder in 2024.

Kraken Visit Avalanche Tonight

The Kraken are taking on the defending Stanley Cup champions.  Seattle visits the Avalanche tonight in Denver.  The Kraken come off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Blues and have dropped three straight games.  Will Borgen, Ryan Donato and Adam Larsson all found the back of the net for Seattle, which fell to 1-2-and-2.  Martin Jones allowed four goals and made 24 saves in the losing effort.  Colorado comes in at 2-1-and-1.  

ESPN's College GameDay Coming to Eugene

College football action continues this weekend.  Ninth-ranked Oregon returns to the gridiron as it hosts Number-10 UCLA on Saturday afternoon in Eugene. You can hear that game right here on 100.1 FM and 1110 AM KBND starting at 10:30. Also ESPN's College GameDay will be live from Eugene. Elsewhere Oregon State is at home as it hosts Colorado on Saturday night in Corvallis.

Yankees-Guardians Postponed, NLCS Set To Start

The American League Division Series will finally be settled on Tuesday.  The Yankees and Guardians will meet for Game Five on Tuesday after Monday's game was postponed due to inclement weather.  New York is taking advantage of the extra day as they are sending left-hander Nestor Cortes to the mound in place of Jameson Taillon.  Cleveland is still deciding on a starter after Aaron Civale was slated to start on Monday.  The winner advances to face the Astros in the ALCS.  Elsewhere, the Padres and Phillies are facing off in Game One of the NLCS in San Diego.  The Friars send Yu Darvish to the hill and Philadelphia turns to Zack Wheeler.  
 

Trail Blazers Sign Nassir Little To Extension

The Trail Blazers are locking down a member of their frontcourt.  Portland announced it signed forward Nassir Little to a contract extension.  The deal is reportedly is for four years and worth 28-million dollars.  Little averaged career highs with 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season.  The 22-year-old is coming off season-ending shoulder surgery in January.  Little was drafted by Portland 25th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Chargers Edge Broncos In Overtime On Monday Night Football

 Dustin Hopkins hit the game-winning 39 yard field goal in overtime as the Chargers edged the Broncos 19-16 on Monday night football.  Hopkins was a perfect 4-4 on the day, despite dealing with a hamstring injury throughout the game.  The game-winning kick was set up after Montrell Washington muffed a punt return for Denver and the ball was recovered by Los Angeles. Justin Herbert completed 37/57 passes for 238 yards and an interception.  Austin Ekeler rushed for a touchdown to help the Chargers improve to 4-2.  Russell Wilson completed 15-of-28 passes for 188 yards and a score.  The Broncos dropped to 2-4 with the loss.  

Kraken Fall To Hurricanes

The Kraken dropped a second straight game at home.  Seattle fell 5-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes at Climate Pledge Arena.  Andre Burakovsky scored the lone goal for the Kraken in the second period.  Philipp Grubauer allowed five goals and made 29 saves in net.  Seattle has lost two in a row to fall to 1-2-and-1.  The Kraken next host the St. Louis Blues tomorrow night.  

Bend & Summit Grab Shutout Wins; Prep Football Round-Up

Bend squashed Caldera 41-0 and Summit blanked Redmond 35-0. Mountain View beat Ridgeview 44-13 while Crook County fell to La Grande 42-14. Also Baker downed Madras 41-14 while La Pine throttled Elmira 52-26. Sisters handled Pleasant Hill 31-7.

Beavers Beat Cougars. PAC-12 Recap

The Oregon State Beavers beat Washington State on Saturday 24-10. The Beavs Ben Gulbranson completed 12/24 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown while running back Damien Martinez ran the ball 111 yards on 16 carries. Oregon State is now 5-2. 

Elsewhere in the conference, Cal fell to Colorado 20-13 and Washington scorched Arizona 49-39. Utah edged USC 43-42 and Stanford inched past Notre Dame 16-14. In the latest AP Top 25 poll, Georgia is still #1 with Ohio State ranked second. Tennessee has climbed to the third spot and Michigan is fourth. Unbeaten UCLA is ranked 9th followed by Oregon at 10. USC dropped to #12 and Utah is 15th.

Mariners Eliminated From Championship Contention

The Yankees forced a decisive Game Five with the Guardians after a 4-2 win in Cleveland.  Harrison Bader belted a two-run homer and Gerrit Cole tossed seven strong innings as New York tied the best-of-five ALDS at two games apiece.  The Yankees will host the winner-take-all Game Five on Monday in New York.  The winner will advance to face the Houston Astros in the ALCS.  The Astros swept Seattle in their division series.  Meanwhile, the NLCS will feature the Phillies and Padres after both finished off their respective NL division series' on Saturday.  San Diego will be making its first trip to the NLCS since 1998, while the Phils are in the league championship series for the first time since 2010.  

Kraken Host Hurricanes Tonight

The Kraken are looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season.  Seattle hosts the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at Climate Pledge Arena.  The Kraken dropped to 1-1-and-1 after losing to the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 on Saturday.  Justin Schultz scored a pair of goals in the loss.  Martin Jones made 19 saves and allowed five goals in the setback.  Carolina comes in at 2-and-oh on the season.  

Winterhawks Remain Perfect After 5-4 Win

The Portland Winterhawks remained perfect over the weekend as they beat Kamloops 5-4. The Winterhawks are 7-0 on the season and the Seattle Thunderbirds are also unbeaten. The Winterhawks have the week off before battling Tri-Cities on Sunday.

Prep Girls Soccer Preview

In high school girls soccer Bend hosts Ridgeview this afternoon at 4 while Redmond welcomes Caldera. Also Crook County visits Molalla and Madras entertains Gladstone. La Pine challenges Central Linn and Sisters battles Santiam Christain. The boys play at opposite sites.

Bend Volleyball Grabs Two Sweeps

Last night was full of sweeps as Bend took care of Mountain View and Caldera while Ridgeview beat Summit and Redmond. All of those games finished in 3-0 sweeps. Also, Mountain View beat Caldera 3-1. La Pine was beaten by Burns 3-0. In games today, Madras welcomes Molalla, and Crook County hosts Estacada. Also Sisters entertains Creswell.

Davante Adams Charged With Misdemeanor Assault Following MNF Incident

Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams is charged with misdemeanor assault after being caught on video shoving a cameraman after this week's Monday Night Football game.  The criminal complaint accuses Adams of an intentional act causing bodily injury.  It also says Adams caused the cameraman whiplash, a headache, and a possible minor concussion.  Adams is scheduled to appear in court next month.
 

Kraken Fall To Ducks In Season Opener

The Kraken suffered a loss in their season opener.  Seattle fell 5-4 to the Ducks in overtime in Anaheim.  The Kraken weren't able to hold on after Matty Beniers scored to give the team a 4-2 lead early in the third period.  Jared McCann, Andre Burakovsky and Oliver Bjorkstrand also netted goals in the setback.  Philipp Grubauer allowed five goals in net.  Seattle dropped to 0-0-and-1 and visits the Kings tonight in Los Angeles.

Mariners Visit Astros For Game Two Of ALDS

The Mariners are looking to tie up their American League Division Series.  Seattle takes on the Astros this afternoon in Houston.  The Mariners suffered a tough 8-7 loss in Game One after Robbie Ray allowed a three-run walk-off home run to Yordan Alvarez.  The club sends right-hander Luis Castillo to the mound for Game Two.  Opposite him is left-hander Framber Valdez for Houston.  The ALDS is a best-of-five set.  
 

Winterhawks Down Edmonton To Improve 6-0

The Portland Winterhawks remain undefeated after picking up a 5-2 win over Edmonton last night. This is the 3rd straight seven-goal game Portland has played as they improve to 6-0. The Winterhawks next game is this Saturday when they host Kamloops.

Paulson Removes Himself As CEO Of Timbers And Thorns

The owner of the Portland Thorns and Timbers, Merritt Paulson, has removed himself as CEO over the report detailing sexual harassment of players.  Paulson says they should have been more transparent about the firing of coach Paul Riley.  Paulson says he holds himself accountable and someone else needs to take the reins of the organization.  Paulson says Heather Davis will remain interim CEO while a search is launched for a permanent CEO.  Paulson says players will meet the final candidates, so their voices can be heard.
 

Mariners Drop Game One Of ALDS To Astros

The Mariners suffered a brutal loss in the opening game of the American League Division Series.  Seattle fell 8-7 to the Astros after Yordan Alvarez hit a three-run walk-off home run off Robbie Ray.  The Mariners had held a 7-3 lead in the seventh inning, but weren't able to close it out.  Ray was charged with the loss after allowing one run without recording an out.  Game Two of the series is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.  Framber Valdez gets the start for Houston against Seattle's Luis Castillo.  

Trail Blazers Finish Preseason With Loss

The Trail Blazers closed out the preseason with a loss.  Portland fell 131-98 to the Warriors in San Francisco.  Rookie Shaedon Sharpe scored a team-high 17 points off the bench and collected six rebounds.  Jusuf Nurkic added 16 points and shot 12-of-14 from the free throw line.  The Blazers finished the preseason 1-and-4.  Portland now prepares for its regular season opener as it visits the Kings on Wednesday, October 19th. 

U-S-A Women Upset By Spain In Soccer Friendly

The U-S Women's soccer team was upset by Spain 2-0 in an international friendly in Pamplona.  Laia Codina opened the scoring in the 39th-minute while Esther Gonzalez netted a second-half goal to seal the win.  The Spanish side rolled out a reserve squad as 15 players refused a call-up amidst a coaching dispute.  The U-S women lost to England 2-1 late last week and it's the first time the team has surrendered multiple goals in consecutive games since 2019.  The U.S. will face Germany in its next friendly on November 10th.
 

Giants Hire Pete Putila As GM

The San Francisco Giants have their new general manager.  The team announced Monday that it's bringing on Astros assistant GM Pete Putila to become its general manager.  Putila will replace Scott Harris after he was hired by the Tigers in September.  Putila will work under president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi.  The 33-year-old spent the last 12 seasons in the Astros organization.

High School Athletes Can Now Profit Off NIL

High school student-athletes in Oregon can now profit off of their name image and likeness after the Oregon Schools Activities Association delegate assembly voted to change the rules yesterday. The amendment to rule 8.4 is in effect immediately. Certain guidelines are in place such as school facilities are not allowed for NIL purposes as well as student-athletes must disclose agreements or contracts with the school they attend. Blazers Square Off with Warriors in NBA Preseason

The Trail Blazers are returning to the court tonight.  Portland takes on the Warriors in San Francisco.  The Blazers come off a 126-94 loss to the Kings and fell to 1-and-3 in the preseason.  Jerami Grant scored a team-high 17 points and Anfernee Simons chipped in with 16.  Damian Lillard had a quiet game with eight points on 2-of-10 shooting from the floor.  

Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny To Miss Rest Of Season

The Seahawks are confirming the poor news regarding their starting running back.  Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Rashaad Penny will miss the rest of the season due to a broken fibula and injured tibia in his left leg.  Carroll added that the running back will undergo surgery.  The 26-year-old suffered the injury in Sunday's loss to the Saints and was carted to the locker room in the third quarter.  Penny had rushed for 346 yards and two touchdowns through five games this season.  

Winterhawks Host Edmonton Tonight

The Portland Winterhawks are back in action tonight when they host Edmonton at 7. Portland enters the game 5-0 and is one of just two teams left in the Western Conference without a blemish on the record. They’ll also play Kamloops on Saturday.

Ducks Steamroll Arizona 49-22. College Football Recap

On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks rolled Arizona 49-22. Bo Nix completed 20 of 25 passes for 265 yards and ran in three touchdown scores. With this win, the Ducks improve to 5-1 and jumped to 11th in the coaches poll. The Oregon State Beavers escaped Stanford with a 28-27 victory after a last-minute touchdown catch by Tre'shaun Harrison. The Beavs are now 4-2. 

Elsewhere in the PAC-12, UCLA shocked Utah, defeating the Utes 42-32. Meantime Arizona State beat Washington 45-38 and USC thrashed Washington State 30-14.

Meantime Western Oregon inched past Central Washington 16-14. Also, Linfield throttled Whitworth 35-17 while Pacific University scorched Puget Sound 42-21. George Fox downed Willamette 27-10.
 

Major League Baseball Division Series' Set

 All four MLB division series' are set.  The San Diego Padres knocked out the New York Mets with a 6-0 win in Game Three of their NL Wild Card series in New York.  San Diego advances to face the NL West rival Dodgers in the NL Division Series.  L.A. had a first-round bye after posting the best record in baseball.  The other NLDS will feature NL East rivals as the Phillies face the defending champion Braves.  In the American League, the top-seeded Houston Astros will square off with the Seattle Mariners, while the New York Yankees meet the Cleveland Guardians.  All four division series will start on Tuesday.  
 

Seahawks Fall to Saints; Lose Penny For Future.

Seattle fell 39-32 to the Saints in New Orleans. Geno Smith completed 16 of 25 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns, including a 40-yard bomb to Tyler Lockett.  DK Metcalf also added 88 receiving yards and a score. The Seahawks are likely losing their starting running back for an extended amount of time.  The NFL Network reports Rashaad Penny suffered a fractured tibia in Seattle's loss to the Saints. The Seahawks will turn to rookie Kenneth Walker III, while Penny is sidelined.

 

The 49ers rolled to a second straight win after cruising past the Panthers 37-15 in Charlotte.  Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns for San Francisco, which leads the NFC West at 3-and-2. 

Portland Winterhawks Remain Unbeaten

The Portland Winterhawks picked up a pair of wins over the weekend as they beat Medicine Hat 4-3 in overtime on Saturday, and defeated Spokane 5-2 last night. The Winterhawks are 5-0 on the season and have tonight off before hosting Edmonton tomorrow.

Mountain View Cruises Past Redmond 45-6; Prep Football

Last night Mountain View crushed Redmond 45-6. Tonight Bend visits Summit and Caldera hosts Ridgeview. Crook County welcomes Pendleton and Sisters entertains Creswell. Also, La Pine plays Pleasant Hill. Tomorrow Madras hosts La Grande.

College Football Round-Up

The 12th-ranked Oregon Ducks visit Arizona. The kickoff is tomorrow at 6 pm. Also, the Oregon State Beavers challenge Stanford in the Bay Area. Kickoff is at 8 pm. 

Elsewhere in the PAC-12, 18th-ranked UCLA hosts #11 Utah, and #21 Washington plays Arizona State. Also, 6th-ranked USC welcomes Washington State. 

In small college ball around the state, Western Oregon plays Central Washington tomorrow at 6 while Linfield battles Whitworth. Pacific University takes on Puget Sound while George Fox visits Willamette. Meantime Southern Oregon entertains Montana Western.

Mariners Challenge Blue Jays in AL Wild Card Series

The Mariners are opening their first playoff series since 2001.  Seattle takes on the Blue Jays this afternoon in Toronto. The Mariners finished the season 90-72 and secured the second American League Wild Card.  The Blue Jays finished just ahead of them with a 92-70 record.  

 

Elsewhere in the American League, the Rays challenge the Guardians. In the National League playoffs, the Cardinals host the Phillies, and the Mets welcome the Padres.

Trail Blazers Continue Preseason by Grabbing 138-85 Win

The Trail Blazers picked up their first win of the preseason.  Portland defeated Maccabi Ra'anana of the Israeli National League 138-85 at the Moda Center.  Rookie Shaedon Sharpe exploded for 27 points off the bench and Keon Johnson chipped in with 18 points.  They'll visit the Kings on Sunday night.  

Portland Winterhawks Host MH Tigers This Weekend

Tomorrow the Portland Winterhawks return to the ice as they host the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Winterhawks are 3-0 in the early going, and they also visit Spokane on Sunday.

Two Executives With Timbers/Thorns Fired

Two executives with the Portland Timbers and Thorns soccer clubs have been fired following a report of sexual harassment of Thorns players.  The Thorns announced president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson and president of business Mike Golub were relieved of their duties today.  Owner Merritt Paulson announced Monday he's stepping aside from his duties and general counsel Heather Davis is interim president of Peregrine Sports, which runs both teams.  

Mountain View Battles Redmond in Thursday Night Showdown

We’ve got Thursday night high school football as Mountain View prepares to host Redmond. The kickoff is at 7 pm tonight. Tomorrow Bend visits Summit and Caldera hosts Ridgeview.

The latest coaches polls have been released for the 4A and 3A classifications. La Pine is ranked 8th in the 3A class with a 4-1 overall record. Cascade Christian from Medford tops the class.

Trail Blazers Continue Preseason

The Trail Blazers are returning to the court tonight.  Portland hosts Maccabi Ra'anana of the Israeli National League at the Moda Center.  The Blazers come off a 118-101 loss to the Jazz on Tuesday.  Damian Lillard led the way with 21 points and dished out six assists.  Jerami Grant and Anfernee Simons each chipped in 13 points in the loss.  The Blazers are oh-and-2 in the preseason.  

Kraken Close Preseason On Friday

The Kraken is closing out their preseason slate.  Seattle takes on the Oilers in Edmonton tomorrow night.  The Kraken comes off a 4-1 loss to the Flames on Monday.  Matty Beniers put the Kraken on the board with a third-period goal.  Martin Jones allowed four goals and made 21 saves in net for Seattle.  The Kraken is 4-and-1 in the preseason.

Summit Girls Cross Country #1 in State According to Coaches

Coaches polls have been released for high school cross country. For the boys, Summit is ranked second in the 5A behind Crater. Bend is ranked 7th and Mountain View dropped out. In 4A Crook County is ranked 10th and Sisters is number 5 in the 3A. For the girls, Summit is first place in the 5A class with Bend, Mountain View, and Caldera on the outside looking in. Sisters is ranked 10th in the 3A. 

Prep Volleyball Round-Up October 5

Last night La Pine swept Elmira 3-0 and Trinity Lutheran blanked Prospect 3-0. There’s more action on the hardwood tonight as each 5A school plays twice tonight. Caldera plays Summit at 5 then Mountain View at 6 while Bend challenges Redmond at 4 then follows with Ridgeview. The Ravens then challenge the Panthers and the Storm meet the Cougars. Elsewhere tonight Crook County hosts Molalla and Madras visits Gladstone.

Bend Softball Prospect Commits to UCLA

America’s #1 softball prospect in 2024 and Bend High School star junior pitcher Addisen Fisher has committed to UCLA. In her sophomore season, Fisher notched a .46 ERA while striking out 259 batters in 122 innings. Fisher also hit the ball to the tune of a .510 batting average and 13 home runs.

Major League Baseball Brief October 5

The Mariners swept their doubleheader with the Tigers.  Seattle won Game One 7-6 in 10 innings then beat Detroit 9-6 in Game Two. The Mariners will face the Blue Jays in the AL Wild Card series.  In other team news, outfielder Sam Haggerty is expected to miss at least the first two rounds of the MLB playoffs after suffering a groin injury.  

 

Shea Langeliers drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Athletics walked off the Angels 2-1 in Oakland. Sean Murphy added three hits in the win for Oakland, which improved to 59-and-102.

 

The Giants suffered a second straight loss.  San Francisco fell 6-2 to the Padres in San Diego.  Alex Cobb was charged the loss after allowing one run over five frames. The Giants dropped to 80-and-81 and close the regular season this afternoon.  

Players and Government Leaders Weigh in on Portland Thorns Scandal

The dust is still settling after a bombshell report from the National Womens Soccer League stating former commissioner Jeff Plush assisted Portland Thorns owner Merrit Paulson in hiding allegations of sexual misconduct. Portland Thorns player and National Women’s Soccer Team star Becky Sauerbrunn called for Paulson and other complicit owners to be gone. Governor Kate Brown and Senator Ron Wyden released statements in support of the victims and called for change in women’s athletics.

Prep Soccer Coaches Polls: Summit Ranked #1

In girl's soccer, Mountain View visits Ridgeview, and Crook County battles Madras. Summit hosts Caldera. For the boys, the sites are swapped. Also, the latest coaches polls have been released for boys' soccer. The Summit boys are the #1 team in the state followed by La Salle Prep and McKay. Ridgeview is 5th while Bend jumped into the top 10 and #8. In the 4A classification, Madras is ranked 9th after not being ranked last week. The girl’s coaches polls will be released later this week.

Thorns Owner Paulson Hid Abuse by Ex-Coach

The former commissioner of the National Women’s Soccer League Jeff Plush is accused of ignoring and helping to hide pervasive and systemic abuse and sexual misconduct when he was in charge. An investigation revealed that Plush along with Portland Thorns owner Merrit Paulson knew of alleged abuses by former head coach Paul Riley, but did not act. The investigation states that Paulson knew of alleged abuses as early as 2014 and did not fire Riley until 2015.

Kraken Continue Preseason

The Kraken are continuing preseason action.  Seattle fell 4-1 to the Flames in Calgary.  Matty Beniers put the Kraken on the board with a third-period goal.  Martin Jones allowed four goals and made 21 saves in net for Seattle.  The Kraken dropped to 4-and-1 with the loss.  The team closes out the preseason on Friday night against the Oilers.  In other team news, Seattle signed forward Daniel Sprong to a one-year, two-way contract on Monday. 

Trail Blazers Drop Preseason Opener

The Trail Blazers dropped their preseason opener.  Portland lost to the Clippers 102-97 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.  Damian Lillard scored a team-high 16 points, while Jerami Grant added 14 points and four rebounds.  Jusuf Nurkic posted 13 points and nine rebounds in the loss.  The Blazers fell to oh-and-1 in the preseason and host the Jazz tonight at the Moda Center.  

49ers Dominate Rams On Monday Night Football

The 49ers won their seventh straight regular-season game against the rival Rams with a dominating 24-9 victory on Monday Night Football.  Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 239 yards and a touchdown to lead the Niners, who evened their record at 2-and-2 on the season. Matthew Stafford was held to just 254 passing yards, one interception, and was sacked seven times as the Rams had to settle for three field goals on the night.

Prep Football Round-up

Bend crushed Redmond 43-0 and Mountain View scorched Caldera 48-6. Summit beat Ridgeview 42-8. Crook County blanked The Dalles 26-0 and Madras fell to Pendleton 49-12. La Pine blew out Harrisburg 64-0 and Sisters earned a win over Thurston 48-28.

Ducks Handle Stanford 45-27; College Football Recap

In college football over the weekend, the Oregon Ducks lit up Stanford 45-27. Bo Nix scored four total touchdowns and passed for 161 yards. Also, the Oregon State Beavers got trounced by Utah 42-16.

Elsewhere in the PAC-12, Washington State beat Cal 28-9 and USC downed Arizona State 42-25. Arizona defeated Colorado 43-20, which prompted the Buffs to fire head coach Karl Dorrell. Colorado is off to an 0-5 start and Dorell had an 8-15 overall record through 23 games in Boulder.

The new APp top 25 poll was released over the weekend and Alabama has reclaimed the #1 spot from Georgia. USC is 6th and Utah is ranked 11th followed by Oregon at 12. UCLA is ranked 18th while Washington State is just receiving votes,

In Oregon this weekend, Western Oregon fell to Angelo State 30-7 while Linfield dismantled Puget Sound 72-2. Pacific University shut out Willamette 35-0. The Southern Oregon Raiders beat Eastern Oregon 42-14.

Winterhawks Improve to 3-0 on Season

In the Western Hockey League, the Portland Winterhawks improved the 3-0 on the season after beating Tri-Cities 4-2. The Winterhawks have the week off before returning to the ice on Saturday.

Trail Blazers Begin Preseason in Seattle

The NBA preseason begins today for the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland is taking on the LA Clippers at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Then Portland will return home for a game with the Utah Jazz tomorrow.

Portland Timbers Fall to LAFC 2-1

The Portland Timbers fell to LAFC on Sunday 2-1. Portland is in 6th place in the Western Conference standings and with only one game left this season, the Timbers have left their playoff hopes to next weekend when Portland hosts Real Salt Lake.
