Kraken Continue Preseason

The Kraken are continuing preseason action.  Seattle returns to the ice tonight against the Canucks in Vancouver.  The Kraken come off a 3-0 win over the Flames.  Daniel Sprong, Jaden Schwartz and Andrew Poturalski all scored in the victory.  Seattle scored twice in the second period after a scoreless first by both teams.  The Kraken are 2-and-oh in the preseason so far. 

Major League Baseball Brief September 29

The Mariners snapped their two-game losing skid.  Seattle beat the Rangers 3-1 at T-Mobile Park.  George Kirby earned his eighth win after allowing one run over six frames.  Eugenio Suárez tallied three hits and an RBI for the Mariners, who improved to 84-and-70.  Paul Sewald locked down his 20th save of the year.  The Mariners now lead the Orioles by four-and-a-half games for the final Wild Card spot.  Seattle sends left-hander Marco Gonzales to the mound tonight. 

 

The Athletics suffered their third straight loss.  Oakland fell 4-1 to the Angels in Anaheim.  The A's went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the loss.  Adrian Martinez was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in four-and-two-thirds innings.  Connor Capel drove in the lone run for Oakland, which fell to 56-and-99.  The A's send left-hander Cole Irvin to the mound tonight.  

 

The Giants avoided elimination for one more night after a 6-3 win over the Rockies in San Francisco.  Joc Pederson hit a two-run triple to lead offense for the Giants, who have won three straight and eight of their last nine overall.  San Francisco now sits six-and-a-half games behind Philadelphia for the final NL Wild Card spot with seven games to play.  The Giants send left-hander Carlos Rodon to the mound tonight.  

Trail Blazers Start Preseason Next Week

The Trail Blazers are getting closer to their preseason opener.  Portland starts the preseason on Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.  The Blazers already kicked off their training camp this week with game action not being too far away.  Portland enters camp with 20 players as they battle for roster spots.  The team will trim down the roster more as the regular season nears.  

Bengals Host Dolphins On Thursday Night Football

The defending AFC champions are squaring off with one of the remaining undefeated teams in the NFL.  The Bengals host the Dolphins for a Thursday night showdown in Cincinnati.  Cincinnati earned its first win of the season in Week Three after beating the Jets 27-12.  Joe Burrow threw for three touchdowns in the victory, but the Bengals are still struggling to find success in the run game.  Meanwhile, Miami is the lone undefeated team in the AFC at 3-and-oh.  The Dolphins proved their merit with a 21-19 win over the Bills and Tua Tagovailoa [[ TUNG-oh-vai-LO-uh ]] continues to impress under center.  The QB did suffer an ankle and back injury against Buffalo and is officially listed questionable to play. 

Bend and Sisters On Top in Latest Volleyball Polls

The latest coaches polls for volleyball have been released for all classifications and in the 5A class, the Bend Lava Bears are the top squad. Wilsonville is 2nd followed by Silverton. Summit is ranked 8th and Ridgeview dropped out of the top 10. In the 4A class, Crook County is ranked 5th and Sisters holds the top spot in the 3A.

High School Soccer Round-Up September 27

Yesterday the boys from Crook County lost to Gladstone 3-2 and Madras beat The Dalles 4-2. La Pine was shutout by Siuslaw 5-0 and Sisters blanked Creswell 4-0. On the girl's side, Ridgeview defeated Bend 2-1 and Crook Country was shutout by Gladstone 8-0. Madras fell to The Dalles 7-3.

Today, Mountain View battles Summit and Redmond plays Caldera. 
 

Trail Blazers Have Media Day

The Trail Blazers are nearing the start of the preseason.  Portland held the team's annual media day on Monday.  Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard said he's "excited to play again" after missing large chunks of last season due to injuries.  Lillard signed a two-year extension in the offseason after a flurry of moves by Portland.  The Blazers traded for forward Jerami Grant, drafted guard Shaedon Sharpe and also signed guard Gary Payton the Second in free agency.  

Major League Baseball Brief September 27

The Mariners are looking to lock down a Wild Card spot as they return home.  Seattle hosts the Rangers tonight at T-Mobile Park.  The Mariners come off a series loss to the Royals and have dropped seven of their last 10 games.  The club sends lefty Robbie Ray to the mound for the series opener.  Opposite him is righty Jesus Tinoco for Texas.  The Mariners lead the Orioles by three-and-a-half games for the final Wild Card spot. 

 

The Athletics are hitting the road to face a division foe.  Oakland takes on the Angels tonight in Anaheim.  The A's come off a series loss to the Mets and have dropped three of their last four games.  The club sends right-hander James Kaprielian to the mound for the series opener.  Opposite him is left-hander Patrick Sandoval for Los Angeles.  The A's sit last in the AL West at 56-97. 

 

The Giants are returning home from a successful road trip.  San Francisco hosts the Rockies tonight at Oracle Park.  The Giants come off a series win over the Diamondbacks and have won six of their last seven games.  The club sends righty Logan Webb to the hill for the series opener.  Opposite him is fellow right-hander German Marquez for Colorado.  The Giants come in at 75-78.  

Gabe Klassen Earns WHL Player of the Week

The Western Hockey League’s player of the week is the Winterhawks Gabe Klassen. Klassen scored six goals in two games over the weekend including a 4 score performance against Kelowna to help Portland earn an overtime win.

Ducks Mount Comeback to Beat Wazzu 44-41. College Football Round-Up

The Oregon Ducks squeaked past Washington State 44-41 as the Ducks scored 29 points in the final frame to complete the comeback. Bo Nix completed 33 of 44 passes for 428 yards and 3 touchdowns. Meantime the Oregon State Beavers dropped a heartbreaker to USC 17-14. Chance Nolan tossed 4 picks in the losing effort.

Elsewhere in the PAC-12, Washington cruised past Stanford 40-22 while Cal beat Arizona 49-31. UCLA crushed Colorado 45-17 and Utah handled Arizona State 34-13. In the latest AP Top 25 Poll, the Utes jumped up to #12 in the Nation followed by Oregon at #13. Washington climbed 3 spots to 15th. Washington State, Oregon State, and UCLA are receiving votes.

In the state of Oregon, Western Oregon fell to UT Permian Basin 27-24 and Southern Oregon dropped one to Carroll College 26-14.

High School Football Recap

Redmond edged Glencoe on Friday night 21-20. Bend blanked Canby 35-0 while Ridgeview fell to Pendleton 42-0. Caldera beat Crook County 17-14 while Madras got rolled by Scappoose 53-6. On Saturday Summit defeated Wilsonville 33-21.

Major League Baseball Brief September 26

The Seattle Mariners lost to the Kansas City Royals 13-12. The M’s have today off before beginning a home series with the Rangers tomorrow.

The Oakland A’s got blown out by the New York Mets 13-4. They also have tonight off and will start a 3 game road series with the Angels tomorrow.

The San Francisco Giants earned a 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. They host the Rockies tomorrow.

Portland Winterhawks Grab a Pair of Wins to Open Season

The Portland Winterhawks are off to a quick start to the season grabbing two wins this weekend. Portland blanked Kamloops 3-0 and beat Kelowna 6-5 in overtime. The Winterhawks hit the ice again this Saturday.

Tyler Reddick Wins NASCAR At Texas

Tyler Reddick is taking home the checkered flag at the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.  Reddick had to endure a day of rain and wrecks to bring home the win.  It's the fourth-straight race in the playoffs that a non-playoff driver has won.  Joey Logano finished in second while Justin Haley finished third.

La Pine Grabs Thursday Night Win. Prep Football Round-Up

Mountain View lost to Southridge 24-21 and La Pine beat Sisters 26-14. We have more games slated for tonight as Bend visits Canby and Crook County hosts Caldera. Ridgeview welcomes Pendleton also Madras entertains Scappoose. Redmond faces Glencoe.

Ducks visit Wazzu & Beavers Host USC

Tomorrow the 15th-ranked Oregon Ducks visit Pullman Washington to take on the Washington State Cougars. Kickoff is at 1 pm on Saturday. Elsewhere the Oregon State Beavers are set to host #7 USC. Kickoff in Corvallis is at 6:30.

Elsewhere in the PAC-12, the Huskies welcome Stanford and UCLA visits Colorado. Utah meets Arizona state while Cal challenges Arizona.

In the state of Oregon, Western Oregon plays UT Permian Basin and Southern Oregon battles Carroll College in Montana.

In the NFL last night the Cleveland Browns beat the Steelers 29-17. This weekend the Seattle Seahawks will host Marcus Mariota and the Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff is at 1:25 on FOX. The Las Vegas Raiders battle the Tennessee Titans at 10 am and the 49ers have the Sunday night game in Denver playing the Broncos at 5:20 on NBC.

Major League Baseball Brief September 23

In Major League Baseball the Seattle Mariners defeated the Oakland A’s 9-5. The Mariners remain in the third AL Wild Card spot at 82-67. The M's return home and welcome the Royals today at 5.

Meantime the Athletics begin a weekend home series with the New York Mets. The first pitch is tonight at 6:30. 

Also the San Francisco Giants shutout the Rockies yesterday 3-0. The Giants begin a road series in the desert against the Diamondbacks tonight at 6:30.
 

Portland Winterhawks Open Season in B.C

The Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League open the season tonight in Kamloops British Columbia. They’ll play Kelowna tomorrow.

High School Volleyball September 22

Caldera swept Redmond and Bend broke out the brooms for Summit, and Sisters blanked Siuslaw. There are more games slated for tonight as La Pine is set to host Creswell, Crook County welcomes Gladstone and Madras entertains The Dalles. All of those games begin at 6.

Thursday Night High School Fotball

The latest coaches polls for 4A and 3A football were released by the OSAA. No teams cracked the 4A list but La Pine is ranked 10th in the 3A class. The Hawks visit Sisters today at 7pm. Also tonight Mountain View hosts Southridge.

Jamal Adams Underwent Successful Surgery

The Seahawks are providing a positive update on Jamal Adams.  Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday that the safety underwent a successful surgery to repair a torn quadriceps tendon.  Adams suffered the injury in Week One against the Broncos and will miss the rest of the 2022 season.  The 26-year-old has yet to play a full season since being traded to the Seahawks in 2020.  Adams is a three-time Pro Bowler.

Major League Baseball Brief September 22

The Oakland A’s edged the Mariners 2-1. The M’s Luis Torrens launched a solo home run for Seattle, which fell to 81-67. The Mariners are in third place in the American League Wild Card and just a half-game back of Tampa Bay for the second spot. The final game of a three-game series is today at 12:30.

Meantime the San Francisco Giants blasted the Rockies 6-1. The Giants have won three straight to improve to 72-77, still 9.5 games back of any playoff berth. San Francisco wraps up the series with the Rockies today at noon.

Also, recently retired Giants catcher Buster Posey is joining the team's ownership group.  Multiple reports say Posey becomes one of 31 partners with a financial stake in the franchise.  He also becomes the first former Giants player to be on the board of directors.

Celtics Coach Udoka Expected To Face Organizational Discipline

There are reports that the Boston Celtics are set to discipline head coach Ime Udoka.  According to ESPN, the coach is facing a "significant suspension" for an unspecified violation of organizational guidelines.  The Athletic reported that Udoka had an improper intimate and consensual relationship with a woman on the Celtics' staff, which is a violation of organization guidelines.  Udoka's relationship with the team isn't the only one that's strained.  He and his partner of 12 years, award-winning actress Nia Long, are said to have separated before the alleged scandal with the Celtics staffer played out.  

Summit Football Best in 5A Through 3 Weeks

Yesterday the latest coaches polls for 5A high school football were released. The top three are Summit at 1, Wilsonville is ranked second followed by West Albany at 3rd. Bend is ranked 6th and Mountain View places 10th. The rest of the state’s coaches polls will be released later this week.

High School Volleyball Round-Up September 21

Last night Ridgeview beat Mountain view 3-1 while Central Christian edged Lost River 3-2 and Trinity Lutheran downed Bonanza 3-1. Crook County swept Molalla 3-0. Tonight, Redmond hosts Caldera at 5:30 and Bend welcomes Summit at 6:30. Also Sisters entertains Siuslaw at 6.

Major League Baseball Brief September 21

The Oakland A’s beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1. Tony Kemp mashed a three-run home run in the fifth inning for Oakland, which improved to 54-94. The Mariners fell to 81-66 and are in 3rd place in the American League Wild Card race. The teams continue the series this evening at 6:40.

The San Francisco Giants blasted the Rockies 6-3. Austin Slater added two hits and an RBI for San Francisco, which improved to 71-77. Game three of a four-game series is this afternoon at 5:40.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Maury Wills is dead at the age of 89.   Wills played eight seasons with the Dodgers and won three world series titles with the team. Wills won the National League MVP in 1962 and the led NL in stolen bases from 1960 to 1965.
 

Trail Blazers Hire WNBA Legend Tina Thompson

The Trail Blazers are adding the WNBA's second all-time scoring leader to their team staff.  Portland announced it hired Tina Thompson as a team scout.  The 47-year-old Thompson most recently served as the head coach of the Virginia women's basketball team.  Thompson won four WNBA titles and was a nine-time All-Star in her storied pro career.  The Blazers added several new faces to their basketball operations staff.  

Family Of Injured Utah Little Leaguer Files Lawsuit

The family of a Utah little leaguer is filing a lawsuit following a severe head injury he suffered in a fall from a bunk bed.  It happened before the Little League World Series last month.  Reports indicate the family of 12-year-old Easton Oliverson has filed the suit in Pennsylvania against Little League Baseball, Incorporated and the bunk bed maker.  The suit claims the baseball organization failed to properly protect Oliverson because they didn't install rails on upper bunks in a dormitory housing players.  The bunk bed company is accused of making dangerous and defective equipment that caused permanent injury.  Oliverson fell from his bunk in the dormitory on August 14th and suffered a skull fracture that has required extensive medical treatment.

Summit Boys Soccer #1 in Oregon

Yesterday the latest coaches polls for boys soccer were released. Summit is the new number one team in the state in the 5A followed by Ridgeview at 3. No other area teams cracked the list.

There are a few games tonight for boys soccer, Caldera visits Bend and Summit entertains Ridgeview. Madras hosts Estacada and Crook County welcomes The Dalles. La Pine plays Gervais. For the girls, the sites are swapped.

West Coast League Announces Partnership with MLB

The West Coast League and Major League Baseball have announced a partnership. A release that was published yesterday stated the organizations “announced an agreement to jointly pursue initiatives of mutual interest, including player and coach development, technology innovation related to scouting and fan experience.” Last season there were over 300 former West Coast League athletes affiliated with professional baseball with 60 in the big leagues. Currently, the MLB has four other partner leagues that are not affiliated with minor league baseball.

Also, the Bend Elks are preparing to host Division 1 baseball teams to kick off next month. On October 1st, the Oregon State Beavers will play the Gonzaga Bulldogs in an exhibition game but before that, there is a youth baseball camp hosted by the Beavers at Vince Genna stadium. Trey Lance Has Surgery For Broken Ankle

The 49ers say quarterback Trey Lance is in recovery after undergoing successful surgery on Monday morning.  Team officials say doctors repaired a fibula fracture and ligament damage to his right ankle.  Lance was injured on a running play during Sunday's home opening win over Seattle.  Lance will miss the rest of the 2022 season.  In other team news, rookie running back Tyrion Davis-Price suffered a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss multiple weeks, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.  

Major League Baseball Brief September 20

Yesterday the Seattle Mariners stung the Angles 9-1. Carlos Santana mashed a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning.  Ty France also went deep for Seattle. Tonight the M's begin a road series at Oakland.

Those Oakland A's are coming off a day of rest after dropping two of three to the Houston Astros. The first pitch is tonight at 6:40

The San Francisco Giants beat the Rockies 10-7 in 13 innings yesterday. The Giants continue this series in the mile-high city this evening at 5:40.

Also for the Giants, their general manager Scott Harris has been poached to the Detroit Tigers to become their new president of baseball operations. Harris has served as the Giants' GM for the last three seasons.  Prior to that, he worked in the Chicago Cubs front office for seven seasons, which included a world series title. 

Oregon's Dorlus Named P12 D-Lineman of the Week

The PAC-12 released its players of the week for week three. Oregon's Brandon Dorlus earned the PAC-12 defensive lineman award. Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was named the PAC-12 offensive player of the week while Washington State linebacker Daiyan Henley was named the PAC-12 defensive player of the week.

Prep Football: Bend, Summit, Mountain View, Madras, Crook County Secure Wins

Summit beat Westview 28-12 while Ridgeview lost to McMinnville 15-7. Mountain View scorched Forest Grove 42-7 and Bend blanked Centennial 55-0. Madras downed Caldera 14-6 and Sisters beat Elmira 21-7 while La Pine earned a 28-14 win over Siuslaw. On Saturday Redmond fell to Crook County 28-21
 

Ducks & Beavers Grab Huge Wins

The Oregon Ducks rolled over BYU 41-20 as Bo Nix completed 13 of 18 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns. Nix also scored 3 times with his legs. Meantime the Oregon State Beavers blasted Montana State 68-28 with Chance Nolan tossing 3 touchdowns and punching in a rushing score.

Elsewhere in the PAC 12 Washington took down Michigan State 39-28 and Wazzu crushed Colorado State 38-7. Notre Dame beat Cal 24-17 and UCLA edged Southern Alabama 32-31. Utah beat San Diego State 35-7 and Arizona inched past North Dakota State 31-28.

Arizona State lost to Eastern Michigan 30-21 and promptly fired head coach Herm Edwards.

NFL: 49ers Grab Win Despite Lance Injury

In the NFL the 49ers downed the Seahawks 27-7. 49ers quarterback Trey Lance exited the game in the first quarter with a broken ankle and will require season-ending surgery. 

The Raiders fell to the Cardinals in overtime 29-23.

Prep Soccer: Summit Boys Secure Weekend Win

On Saturday the Summit boys edged Grant 1-0 and Caldera lost to Crescent Valley 2-1. For the girls, Summit came up short to Grant 3-1.

Today the ladies from Redmond visit Mountain View and Sisters entertain Siuslaw. For the boys, the sites are swapped.

Andrea Lee Secures Portland Classic

Sunday capped off the LPGA's Portland Classic and Andrea Lee from Los Angeles earned the tournament victory. Lee shot 19 under for the event at Columbia Edgewater.

Summit hosts Westview and Ridgeview welcomes McMinnville. Elsewhere Mountain View visits Forest Grove and Bend welcomes Centennial. Madras matches up with Caldera and Sisters plays Elmira. Also, La Pine entertains Siuslaw.

In the latest OSAA coaches polls, Summit is the top-ranked team in the 5A followed by Bend at #6 and Mountain View at #10.

#25 Ducks Battle #12 BYU; College Football Round-Up

Tomorrow the 25th-ranked Oregon Ducks play host to #12 BYU. Kickoff is at 12:30 on FOX. In Portland, the Oregon State Beavers play Montana State at Providence Park. Kickoff is at 5 pm tomorrow. 

Meantime in the PAC 12,  Washington hosts #11 Michigan State while Wazzu is at home against Colorado State. Cal visits Notre Dame and #7 USC welcomes Fresno State while UCLA plays the university of Southern Alabama.

In the state of Oregon, Linfield prepares for Redlands, California while Willamette visits Hilbert. Georgefox matches up with Chapman. Western Oregon battles Western New Mexico and Southern Oregon plays College of Idaho.
 

Chiefs Down Chargers 27-24; SEA Meets SF; LV Challenges AZ

In the NFL last night the Chiefs downed the Chargers 27-24. Justin Herbert completed 33/48 passes for 334 yards and 3 touchdowns with 1 interception.

This weekend the Seattle Seahawks are in Santa Clara to take on the 49ers. Kickoff on Sunday is at 1:05 on FOX.

Meantime the Las Vegas Raiders entertain the Cardinals at 1:25 on CBS.

NASCAR Races Bristol Saturday

The NASCAR Playoffs head to Bristol on Saturday for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race.  So far none of the playoff field has advanced to the second round.  Both Erik Jones and Bubba Wallace have played spoiler after winning the previous two races.  Kyle Busch won the spring race.

Timbers Ride Win Streak to Match with Columbus

The Portland Timbers are back in action this weekend as they host Columbus on Sunday. The Timbers are riding a four-match winning streak coming into the matchup and are 6th in the Western Conference.

Volleyball: Bend and Ridgeview to Host Tournaments

Last night Sisters swept Harrisburg 3-0. La Pine was dealt the broom by Siuslaw to open Mountain Valley Conference play.

Tonight Bend and Ridgeview high schools will host multiple games as the Lava Bears welcome Mountain View and Redmond, while the Ravens host Caldera and Summit. Play at Bend high school begins at 4 while the action kicks off at 5 at Ridgeview high. Elsewhere Sisters entertains Pleasant Hill.

Major League Baseball Brief September 14

The Seattle Mariners were shut out at home last night, falling 2-0 to the Padres. The Mariners were held to only three hits and struck out 10 times in the loss. The M’s get another crack at the Padres today at 1

The Oakland A’s lost to the Rangers in walk off fashion last night. The A's weren't able to hold on after taking a 7-2 lead midway through the fifth inning.  Mark Mathias hit a walk-off home run to win the game for Texas. That two-game series reaches a conclusion today at 5.

The San Francisco Giants fell to the Braves 5-1 which ends their short 3-game winning streak. The Giants were held to just four hits in the loss. The rubber match of the 3-game series is this afternoon at 12:45. In other team news, reliever Zack Littell optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Seahawks' Jamal Adams Will Need Knee Surgery

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is providing an update on safety Jamal Adams.  Carroll said Adams will need surgery after injuring his left knee in Seattle's win over the Broncos on Monday.  The 26-year-old was carted to the locker room in the second quarter and didn't return to the game.  Carroll added that the Seahawks don't yet know the extent of the injury, but know it's serious.  Adams missed five games in 2021 due to a shoulder injury. 

Seattle Kraken Promote New Assistant GM

The Seattle Kraken have promoted Alexandra Mandrycky to an Assistant GM role. Mandrycky had been the analytics director for the club since its inception, and prior to that, worked in the Minnesota Wild’s analytics department. She is the 7th female assistant GM in NHL history.

NBA Suspends Suns, Mercury Owner Robert Sarver For One Year

The NBA is suspending Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver for one year related to issues at the teams' workplace.  The league said it interviewed 320 different people including current and former employees who worked for Sarver in his 18-year tenure.  It found Sarver used racial slurs at least five times, made sexual-related comments to women in the workplace, and engaged in harsh treatment of employees.  The league launched an investigation into the Suns owner after an ESPN article late last year accused him of misconduct in the workplace.  Sarver has also been fined ten-million-dollars and must complete a training program focused on respect and appropriate workplace conduct.

OSAA Executive Board Approves Shot Clock in 2023-24

Yesterday the Oregon Schools Activities Association executive board approved the addition of a 35-second shot clock in basketball starting in the 2023-24 season. Oregon is one of the last states to implement a shot clock as all of our neighbors like Washington, California, Idaho and Montana all have rules on the books for shot clocks. The next OSAA executive board meeting is on December 12th.

Kitan Oladapo Named Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Week

Kitan Oladapo is getting recognized for his performance in Week Two.  The Oregon State defensive back won the weekly award after setting a career-high with 15 tackles against Fresno State.  Oladapo also had a sack in the victory for the Beavers.  He becomes the second straight Oregon State player to win the award after defensive back Jaydon Grant got it last week.  

Seahawks Knock Off Broncos On Monday Night Football

Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard kick with 20 seconds left as the Seahawks knocked off the Broncos 17-16 on Monday night in Seattle.  Geno Smith completed 23-28 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns, one of which came on Seattle's opening drive.  The Seahawks' defense held up in the red zone, forcing two fumbles at the one-yard line.  Russell Wilson threw for 340 yards and a touchdown in his Denver debut.  Denver dropped to oh-and-1, while Seattle improved to 1-0

Major League Baseball Brief September 13

The Seattle Mariners are kicking off an interleague series at home.  Seattle hosts the Padres tonight at T-Mobile Park.  The Mariners come off a series win over the Braves and have won 10 of their last 13 games. The Mariners sit second in the AL West at 79-61 and currently hold a wild card spot.

The Oakland A’s are looking to bounce back as they hit the road.  Oakland takes on the Rangers tonight in Arlington.  The A's come off a series loss to the White Sox and have dropped nine of their last 11 games.

And the San Francisco Giants opened their home series with a victory.  San Francisco edged the Braves 3-2 at Rracle Park. The Giants also inked a 2-year extension with Wilmer Flores. The 31-year-old infielder is in his third season with San Francisco and is now signed through the 2024 season. The ten-year major league veteran has tied his career high with 18 home runs so far this season.
 

Sun Face Aces In Game Two

The Sun will be looking to even the WNBA Finals at one game apiece tonight.  Connecticut is in Las Vegas for Game Two against the Aces.  The Sun were topped 67-64 in the first game of the finals.  This is Connecticut's first trip to the WNBA Finals since losing in 2004 and again in 2005.  Las Vegas is making its first finals appearance since moving to the Sin City.  The series will shift to Uncasville for Game Three on Thursday.  

Prep Football Round-Up

The Bend Lava Bears smoked Medford 39-7. Caldera was blanked by Grants Pass 35-0. Mountain View downed Churchill 16-6 while Summit beat Thurston 48-10. Ridgeview crushed Centennial 62-6 and Redmond fell to Pendleton 27-20. Sisters lost to Madras 29-14 and La Pine was stunned by Dayton 40-6.
 

Oregon Lays Smackdown to Eastern Washington. CFB Recap

The Oregon Ducks made a statement with a 70-14 beatdown of Eastern Washington. Bo Nix completed 28 of 33 passes for five touchdowns and Oregon running backs added four more touchdowns. The Oregon State Beavers escaped Fresno with a 35-32 victory. Senior Jack Colletto scored the winning touchdown for the Beavers as time expired.

The Beavers are still just receiving votes in the latest Top 25 polls but the Ducks jumped back onto the list as the 25th ranked teams. Georgia leaped over Alabama for the #1 spot and USC climbed 3 places to #7. Oregon’s week 3 opponent BYU jumped 9 spots to #12. Washington State is also receiving votes.

In other college football news from the state, Portland State was beaten by Washington 52-6. Willamette football earned a 26-14 win over La Verne and George Fox edged Howard Pain 42-39. Meantime Southern Oregon University crushed Montana State-Northern 56-6.

Raiders & 49ers Lose in Week 1

The Las Vegas Raiders fell 24-19 to the Chargers in Inglewood. Las Vegas starts the season 0-1 and next hosts the Cardinals in week two.

The 49ers fell to the Bears 19-10 in week one. Trey Lance finished 13-28 for 164 yards and an interception for San Francisco.  Lance also led the team with 54 rushing yards. San Francisco fell to 0-1 and host the Seahawks in week two. 

Tonight the Seahawks play the Broncos. The kickoff is at 5:15 on ESPN.

Bend Remains On Top in Latest Volleyball Coaches Poll

The latest coaches polls were released for high school volleyball over the weekend and the Bend Lava Bears spend their second week at the top of the list in the 5A. Summit is ranked 8th and Ridgeview placed 10th.  

In the 4A classification, Crook County is ranked 7th, and Sisters is ranked 3rd in the 3A.

Portland Timbers Collect 4th Straight Win. 1-0 Over Minnestoa

The Portland Timbers keep the good times rolling as they picked up their fourth consecutive win over Minnesota United 1-0. The Timbers have now jumped up to 5th place in the Western Conference, leapfrogging Minnesota in the process. Portland is in action again this weekend at home against Columbus.

Bend Tackles North Medford. Prep Football Schedule

Bend hosts North Medford. Caldera visits Grants Pass. Mountain View entertains Churchill and Summit welcomes Thurston. Ridgeview takes on Centennial and Redmond meets Pendleton. Sisters play Madras while La Pine hosts Dayton. Every game kicks off at 7 pm tonight.
 

Ducks and Beavs Hope to Grab Week 2 Wins

This weekend in college football the Oregon Ducks welcome Eastern Washington to Autzen Stadium for their home opener. Kickoff is tomorrow at 5:30. Meantime the Oregon State Beavers will be in California's central valley to take on Fresno State. Kickoff is at 7:30. 

Elsewhere in the PAC 12, Washington plays Portland State, Wazzu visits #19 Wisconsin and Stanford entertains #10 USC. Cal welcomes UNLV while UCLA meets Alabama State. 13th ranked Utah plays Southern Utah and Colorado is at the Air Force.

Here in Oregon, Linfield welcomes Redlands, California. Willamette hosts La Verne and George fox takes on Howard Payne. Southern Oregon University meets the College of Idaho.

NFL Week 1 Preview SEA LV SF

The Seahawks are nearing their first game of the season.  Seattle hosts the Broncos on Monday night at Lumen Field.  The Seahawks are facing off with their former quarterback Russell Wilson.  Running back Kenneth Walker the Third, cornerback Artie Burns, linebacker Alton Robinson and long snapper Tyler Ott all missed practice on Thursday.   Seattle is looking to bounce back from a 7-and-10 finish last season.  

 

The 49ers open their season on the road as they visit the Bears in Chicago on Sunday morning.  San Francisco is handing its offense over to second-year quarterback Trey Lance. 

 

The Raiders take on a divisional rival as they visit the Chargers on Sunday afternoon.  Las Vegas went 10-and-7 in 2021 and made the playoffs. The Raiders are coming into the season opener at full strength as the team listed no players on Thursday's injury report. 

High School Volleyball & Soccer Round Up September 9

VOLLEYBALL

Thursday night Mountain View swept Springfield 3-0. Madras was dealt a broom by Sweet Home. And La Pine beat Elmira 3-0.

 

SOCCER

Yesterday the boys from Sisters beat Crook County 7-4 and La Pine downed Central Christian 4-2.

On the girls' side, Mountain View stunned Madras with an 8-0 shutout while Ridgeview was blanked by Ashland 2-0. La Pine fell to Creswell 3-0.

Major League Baseball Brief September 9

The Seattle Mariners are back in action tonight when they play the Atlanta Braves at home. The first pitch this evening is at 6:40. 

The Oakland A’s got dismantled by the White Sox 14-2. Game two of that series is today at 6:40.

And the San Francisco Giants fell to the Brewers 4-2. Now the Giants travel to Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs at 1:05.
 

NFL Season Kicks Off Thursday

The NFL is finally back.  The season kicks off tonight with the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams hosting the Buffalo Bills at SoFi Stadium.  The Rams will look to become the first team to go back-to-back since the New England Patriots won Super Bowls 38 and 39.  The game will air on NBC beginning at 5:20 p.m. 

La Pine #7 in Latest Coaches Poll

In local high school football, the latest 3A  Coaches Polls were released yesterday by the Oregon Schools Activities Association. La Pine is ranked 7th for the second week in a row after a week one win. La Pine hosts Dayton on Friday night.

Major League Baseball Brief September 8

The Seattle Mariners lost to the White Sox 9-6. This loss puts the M’s at 77-60 on the year with sole possession of the second American League Wild Card. Seattle has the night off before hosting the Braves on Friday.

The Oakland A’s fell to the Braves 7-3. The Athletics have now officially been eliminated from playoff contention. The A's dropped to 50-87 after getting swept in the two-game set.  Oakland hosts the White Sox tonight at 6:40.

The San Francisco Giants lost to the Dodgers 7-3. David Villar hit a pair of home runs in the losing effort.  The Giants kick off a doubleheader with the Brewers today at 1.

Stewart Finishes Second In WNBA MVP Voting

Breanna Stewart is coming up just short of her second WNBA MVP award.  The Storm forward finished second in this year's MVP voting as Aces forward A'ja Wilson claimed her second MVP trophy.  Stewart received 23 first-place votes, while Wilson got 31.  The 28-year-old Stewart averaged 21.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season.  The Seattle forward was named MVP back in 2018.  

Trail Blazers Sign Multiple Players

The Trail Blazers are adding some depth to their roster ahead of this month's training camp.  Portland announced it signed forward Devontae Cacok, guard Isaiah Miller, guard Jared Rhoden and center Olivier Sarr on Wednesday.  The four players will have a chance to make the Blazers' roster when training camp kicks off in Santa Barbara on September 27th.  

Ducks Fall out of AP Top 25

The new AP Top 25 has been released and the Oregon Ducks are nowhere to be found. Oregon dropped out of the Top 25 after the week one loss to Georgia. The Bulldogs got bumped to #2, swapping places with Ohio State and still behind #1 Alabama. USC jumped four spots to #10 in the country while Utah dropped six spaces to #13.

Summit #2 in 5A Football Coaches Poll

The OSAA released the latest 5A football coaches poll yesterday Summit jumped up to a 2nd place ranking in the state while Bend climbed to 9th place. Mountain View dropped to 10th after a week one loss and Ridgeview was knocked out of the top 10 altogether. Wilsonville is spending its second week atop the standings. The OSAA will release the 4A and 3A coaches polls Wednesday morning.

Major League Baseball Brief September 7

Last night the Seattle Mariners shut out the White Sox 3-0. Logan Gilbert struck out nine batters and allowed just five hits over six innings. The M’s look to grab the rubber match of the series this afternoon at 1.

The Oakland A’s fell to the Braves 10-9. Sean Murphy, Chad Pinder, and Seth Brown all homered in the losing effort. The A’s will try to avoid the short two-game series sweep this afternoon at 12:30.

The San Francisco Giants got thwarted by the Dodgers 6-3. That ends a four-game Giants winning streak. San Francisco can claim the series today at 1.

Caldera Climbs to #1 5A Girls Soccer Coaches Poll

The latest high school soccer coaches polls have been released by the OSAA. For the girl's rankings, Caldera has lept from unranked, to the #1 team in the 5A Class. Summit is ranked 4th with Bend coming in at 9. Redmond and Ridgeview are in a tie for 10th. The girls from Sisters are ranked 7th in the 3A. For the 5A boys, Summit is ranked 2nd in the state followed by Ridgeview at 6. In the 3A Sisters dropped out of the top 10 after beginning the year 0-2.

A peek at yesterday’s scoreboard reveals the Summit boys earned a 2-1 win over South Eugene, Mountain View beat Sisters 4-0, and Bend fell to West Albany 1-0. And Madras exploded for an 8-2 victory over Junction City. 

Today in boys soccer Redmond visits Newberg at 7, and for the girls, Bend entertains Lincoln at 4:15.
 

Storm Eliminated By Aces In Sue Bird's Final Game

 Sue Bird's basketball career is coming to an end after the Storm were eliminated from the WNBA playoffs.  Seattle lost to the Las Vegas Aces 97-92 in Game Four of their semifinals series.  Bird provided eight points and eight assists in her final game in the league.  The 41-year-old won four WNBA titles and finished as the league's all-time leader in assists and games played.  Bird was named to her 13th All-Star game this season and spent her entire WNBA career with the Storm.  
 

Area High Schools Go 5-4 in Week 1 Football Matchups

On Friday night Summit lost to Tualatin 19-12. Mountain View came up short against Canby 21-18. Redmond squashed Hood River Valley 44-8. Ridgeview fell to Springfield 40-33. Caldera was shut out by Pendleton 27-0. Crook County bested Philomath 24-7. Madras beat Sweet Home 26-20 in overtime. Sisters blanked Burns 23-0. La Pine crushed Corbett 56-0.

Ducks Rolled by Georgia; Beavs Trounce Boise St. College Football Recap

On Saturday the Ducks were no match for Georgia, falling to the Bulldogs 49-3. Bo Nix went 21/37 and tossed two interceptions in the week one loss. In Corvallis, the Oregon State Beavers beat Boise State 34-17. Chance Nolan completed 14/23 passes with two touchdowns and two picks.

Elsewhere in the PAC 12 Washington beat Kent 45-20, Washington State downed Idaho 24-17, and Stanford rolled Colgate 41-10. Cal bested UC Davis 34-14. USC decimated Rice 66-14. UCLA boat raced bowling green 45-17. Utah was edged by Florida 29-26. Colorado was beaten by TCU 38-13. Arizona won against San Diego State 38-20 and ASU thumped Northern Arizona 40-3.

In smaller college ball, Linfield beat Huntingdon 41-34. Willamette took a 44-21 loss to Pomona Pitzer, and Georgefox downed Redlands 38-31. Southern Oregon crushed Montana State-Northern 56-6.

Mountain View and Redmond visit Crook County this afternoon. Elsewhere Caldera visits Henley, and Bend meets North Eugene. Sisters is on the road to Elmira and La Pine challenges Pleasant Hill.

SOCCER

The summit boys host South Eugene at 6. Mountain View welcomes Sisters at 4:30. Ridgeview entertains Putnam at 4:30, Bend travels to West Albany and Madras plays Junction City at 4pm. The girl’s soccer teams play at opposite sites.

Yesterday the Seattle Mariners fell to the White Sox 3-2. Seattle had a seven-game winning streak snapped but can bounce back in game two of the series tonight at 6:40.

The San Francisco Giants beat the Dodgers 7-4. The rivalry series continues tonight at 7:10

The Oakland A’s had the day off on labor day but return to action today to host the Atlanta Braves. The first pitch is set for 6:40.

Trail Blazers Waive Pelle, Add Sarr

The Portland Trail Blazers waived young center Norvel Pelle but added Oliver Sarr in his place. The 23-year-old center from Wake Forest played 22 games for the Thunder last season as an undrafted rookie.

Bend Picks Up Shutout Win 33-0 Over Lincoln

Last night the Bend Lava Bears earned a week one shutout win over Lincoln 33-0. The Bend defense held the Cardinals to less than 100 yards of offense and senior quarterback Logan Malinowski tossed three touchdowns.

Tonight the action continues as Summit visits Tualatin. Mountain View welcomes Canby, Redmond hosts Hood River Valley, Ridgeview challenges Springfield on the road, Crook County entertains Philomath and Madras plays Sweet Home. Also, Sisters travels to Burns, and La Pine plays Corbett.

Ducks Prepare for Georgia; Beavers Host Boise State

Tomorrow the 11th-ranked Oregon Ducks play #3 Georgia in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Georgia. Kickoff is at 12:30. The Oregon State Beavers host Boise State tomorrow night at 7 pm. 

In small college ball, Linfield visits Huntington Alabama, Willamette welcomes Pomona-Pitzer, and Georgefox battles Redlands California.

In high school volleyball, yesterday Mountain View picked up a pair of wins over Pendleton and La Grande. Caldera blanked Madras 3-0. Bend shutout Crook County 3-0 and Ridgeview swept Mazama. Sisters stole a five-set match from Burns 3-2. This afternoon Summit visits South Medford at 2 pm.

SOCCER 

Moving to the high school soccer pitch, the Redmond boys beat Sisters 3-1. Mountain View bested Churchill 3-1 and Ridgeview blanked Corvallis 1-0.
 

Broncos, Russell Wilson Agree To Massive Extension

Russell Wilson and the Broncos are in agreement on a massive contract extension that'll keep him in Denver for the foreseeable future.  The deal is for five additional years and 245 million dollars.  Wilson was traded from Seattle to the Broncos this offseason.  The new contract brings Wilson's total deal to seven years and 296 million dollars with Denver.  The deal is the third most lucrative contract in NFL history as far as guaranteed money is concerned.

Major League Baseball Brief September 2

The Seattle Mariners blanked the Tigers 7-0 to pick up the series sweep. Rookie Julio Rodriguez and Ty France went back-to-back with solo bombs in the third inning of the victory.  The Mariners have won four straight to improve to 73-58 and are in second place in the AL Wild Card. Seattle plays the Guardians today at 4 pm.

The Oakland A’s fell to the Nationals 7-5 in extra innings. The A’s take their 49-83 record to Baltimore to challenge the Orioles today at 4 pm.

The Giants are looking to snap their seven-game-losing skid as they kick off another home series.  San Francisco hosts the Phillies tonight at Oracle Park. The first pitch is at 7:15 pm.

Bend Kicks Off Football Season on the Road

The Bend Lava Bears begin the season tonight on the road against Lincoln. Gametime is set for 7 pm.

Also, the OSAA released its preseason coaches poll for the 5A classification. Summit is ranked 3rd in the state followed by Mountain View at 7, Bend is ranked 9th, and Ridgeview earned the 10th spot.

In Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners picked up their third straight win.  Seattle beat the Tigers 5-3 in Detroit. The M's look for the sweep this morning at 10 am.

The Oakland A’s had their three-game winning streak snapped.  Oakland fell 5-1 to the Nationals in Washington DC. The rubber match of that three-game series is today at 1.

The San Francisco Giants got swept in their home series.  San Francisco fell 5-4 to the Padres at Oracle Park. The Giants have today off before welcoming the Phillies tomorrow.

Former Beavers Join NFL Rosters

Former Oregon State Beaver, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings - Sean Mannion is heading to Seattle to join the Seahawks practice squad. Also, former Beaver Isaiah Dunn was picked up by Seattle on waivers.

Storm Fall To Aces In Game Two

The Storm weren't able to take a 2-0 lead in their WNBA semifinals series.  Seattle fell 78-73 to the Aces in Game Two in Las Vegas.  Breanna Stewart led the way with 32 points, while Tina Charles posted 17 points and nine rebounds.  The Storm took an early seven-point lead after the first quarter, but weren't able to hold on as the series is now tied at one game apiece.  Game Three is set for Sunday afternoon in Seattle.  

Serena Beats World No. 2 At U.S. Open

Serena Williams is adding to her legendary status in what's likely the final tournament of her career.  On Wednesday, the 40-year-old took down Anett Kontaveit in three sets at the U.S. Open, punching her ticket to the third round of the singles bracket.  Kontaveit came into the match as the number two women's tennis player in the world.  Williams is now set to play doubles with her sister Venus on Thursday.  Her next solo match is Friday.
