Elks Drop Series At Ridgefield... Blazers Deal Both 2nd Round Picks

NBA:

Draft Day Two saw some serious wheeling and dealing from Portland. They had 2 picks in the second round, the 4th, and 10th. Or 34th and 40th overall. They ended up trading both of them for future picks over the next 5 years, and getting cash from a couple of teams. The Trail Blazers will have 15 players on the roster when they go into training camp this fall. It’s very possible some of those under contract right now including Jerami Grant may not be here by the time camp rolls around. The trades and contract deals won’t be official until after July 6th.

MLB:

San Francisco lost to the Cubs 5 to 3 in 10 innings yesterday when reliever Luke Jackson gave up a 2 run walk-off homer. The Giants went down 3 to nothing early but tied it in the sixth, but couldn’t muster any more offense. They did win the four game series getting 4 games under .500 as they passed the midway point of the season that has seen a decimated starting pitching staff end up making SF one of the top teams in the majors for bullpen innings. Now the division leading Dodgers visit for a weekend series starting tonight at 7:15.

The Mariners lead in the AL West stands at 4 and a half games over Houston. They’re hoping home cooking in Seattle will help shake off the losing road trip. They’re at 46 and 37 but have lost 6 of their last 10. They’re set for a weekend series against Minnesota, who are second place in the AL Central at 45 and 36. First pitch against the Twins from T-Mobile Park is at 6:40.

Soccer:

The Portland Thorns are in 5th place on the NWSL table. They take on the expansion team Utah Royals tomorrow at 7.

The Portland Timbers are in 6th place in the MLS West. They host Minnesota tomorrow night who are right up above them in 5th place. Match time is 7:30 from Providence Park.

Local:

The Elks were shut out in Ridgefield 5 - 0 last night. That drops their record to 13 and 11, in third place behind Corvallis and Portland. Now its back to Bend for a non-league weekend series with the Northwest All Stars.  First pitch tonight is at 6:35. There’s a firework show Sunday night after the game at Vince Genna.

Elks Edged By Ridgefield...Blazers Select Clingan, Trade 14th Pick

NBA:

Draft day did see some shuffling of Portland’s roster. Connecticut’s Donovan Clingan was taken with the 7th pick. A few hours before the draft, the Blazers traded guard Malcolm Brogdon and the 14th pick where they selected guard Carlton Carrington to Washington for wing Deni Avdija. The Wizards will also get Portland’s 2029 first round pick. Avdija, from Israel, was the 9th overall pick in the 2020 draft. The selection of the big man Clingan probably puts centers Deandre Ayton or Robert Williams III on the trading block now. Jerami Grant’s status is probably up in the air, too.  The Trail Blazers have two picks in tonight’s second round, the 4th, and 10th. Or 34th and 40th overall.

MLB:

The Mariners avoided being swept out of Tampa…beating the Rays 5 to 3 yesterday and stopping their three game losing streak. George Kirby picked up the win going six innings with an earned run on four hits. Cal Raleigh had a three-run homer. After the tough road trip losing 6 of 9 the Ms’ lead in the AL West has narrowed to 4 and a half games over Houston. It’s back to Seattle tomorrow to take on the Twins.

San Francisco held off the Cubs 4 to 3 last night. The Giants jumped out to an early 3 - 1 lead in the second inning, when Michael Conforto and David Villar hit back-to-back home runs. Luis Matos hit a tiebreaking solo shot in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Jackson came on in relief in the  5th for his 4th straight win.  The chance for the four game series sweep starts today at 12:45.

Local:

The Elks were edged by Ridgefield last night 3 to 2. Those two runs came in the 8th inning but Bend couldn’t continue the rally in the 9th. They don’t lose too much ground in their 3rd place spot in the south standings though as Corvallis and Portland both lost too. That sets up a rubber match for the series final.  First pitch tonight is at 6:35.

Elks Blast Raptors...NBA Draft: Blazers Pick 7th, 14th

MLB:

The Mariners were blown out 11 - 3 by the Rays yesterday. Luis Castillo took the loss, giving up four runs in 5.1innings. Mitch Garver hit another homer. Ty France had a two run shot to account for Seattle’s scoring.  The Ms will now try to salvage the series against Tampa… and stop their three game losing streak. First pitch is this morning at 9:10.

San Francisco beat the Cubs again last night. Six Giants pitchers held Chicago to 1 run on four hits. The Giants plated 5 with the middle of the order Jorge Soler, Matt Chapman, and Michael Conforto knocking in 4 of them. Game three of the four game series with the Cubbies starts at 6:45 tonight.

NBA:

With the first round of the Draft today, Portland has some options with the 7th and 14th overall picks. Big men Zach Edey, the two-time college National Player of the Year, and Donovan Clingan from the national champion UConn Huskies have both been linked to the 7th pick. A few mock drafts had small forward Cody Williams a freshman out of Colorado getting chosen. The 14th pick could be a selection for a later trade involving Jerami Grant or maybe even centers Deandre Ayton or Robert Williams III. One name that popped up often was French prospect Tidjane Salaun.

The Draft starts at five this afternoon.

The Trail Blazers also have two picks in tomorrow’s second round at 34th, and 40th.

Local:

The Elks hammered Ridgefield 10 to 4 last night. Interestingly all 14 of the runs came in the 8th inning. Bend scored 10 in the top, and the Raptors mustered 4 in the bottom. Elks Pitcher Reid Madariaga threw six hitless innings to start the game before coming out in the 7th. They’ve now won six of their last 10. Game two of the series is tonight at 6:35.

Elks Set To Face Raptors in Ridgefield

MLB:

The Mariners fell 4 - 3 to the Rays yesterday after taking the lead in the 7th inning and then giving it up in the 8th. Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver both homered to account for the Ms scoring with a solo from the Big Dumper and Garver a two-run shot as the DH. Starting pitcher Bryan Woo left the game in the 4th with a tight hamstring. Also yesterday, The team brought back starting infielder Jorge Polanco from the injured list while sending down top prospect Tyler Locklear to Triple-A Tacoma.  Seattle is 2 and 5 on this road trip. They’re back against Tampa today. First pitch is at 3:50.

San Francisco scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to come back to beat the Cubs 5 to 4 yesterday. Two of the runs came on sacrifice flies. The game ended on a walk-off base on balls. Pitcher Spencer Howard went 4 and two thirds shutout innings for the win. Nick Ahmed and Matt Chapman also homered. Chapman scored two runs. Game two of the four game series with Chicago starts at 6:45 tonight.

NBA:

With the Draft approaching, Portland has made a couple of coaching hires, adding Nate Bjorkgren and Chris Fleming to the staff. Both have had several NBA stops with Bjorkgren having been a Blazers special assistant the past year. A lot could still happen between now and tomorrow’s draft. NBA Insiders say Dallas and the Lakers have checked in with the Trailblazers about Jerami Grant. The forward is a tantalizing piece for teams with championship aspirations. And let’s be honest, that is not the Blazers next season. They could deal Grant for more assets. Portland chooses 7th and 14th overall in tomorrow’s Draft.  [and then 34th, and 40th in the second round in the Draft.]

Local:

The Elks are in third place at 12 and 9, five and a half games behind Corvallis in the West Coast League South division. Having just won two of three against Ridgefield they now travel to face the Raptors for a series starting tonight. First pitch is at 6:35.

Elks Can't Complete Raptors Sweep

MLB:

San Francisco got swept in St Louis going down 5 to 3 yesterday. Logan Webb took the loss giving up four runs in six innings. Catcher Patrick Bailey’s homer in the 8th inning broke up a perfect game by Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray. The Giants have fallen back to 4th place in the Division, six games below .500. They’re back at Oracle Park to face the Cubs again who they just lost a series to last week in Chicago. First pitch tonight is at 6:45

The Mariners had a tough time in south Florida losing 6 to 4 yesterday and dropping two of three to the last-place Marlins. Bryce Miller got roughed up allowing six runs on six hits in four innings. Elks Rally Falls Short...Ducks' Boettcher Gold Glove

MLB:

The Mariners were blanked 8 to 0 by Cleveland yesterday. The Guardians are responsible for two of the Ms four shutout losses this season. Shortstop JP Crawford was thrown out arguing a called third strike in the 5th inning, and manager Scott Servais was thrown out immediately afterward arguing Crawford’s ejection. Strikezone replays showed Crawford appeared to be right. Seattle had a tough day at the plate with just three hits and 14 strikeouts. Bryan Woo took the loss. Rubber match of the series is this morning at 11:10.

San Francisco fell short in the comeback attempt going down 6 to 5 to the Cubs yesterday to lose the series in Chicago. Next they face St. Louis starting with a game at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The stadium is the oldest existing professional ballpark in the U.S. It was the home of the Birmingham Black Barons for nearly forty years.
