High School Sports Round-Up August 31

Yesterday the OSAA released its 4A and 3A preseason coaches polls. La Pine is ranked 7th in the 3A and there were no local teams in the 4A top 10. The OSAA will release other classifications coaches polls throughout the next few days.

Yesterday in high school volleyball action Crook County blanked Caldera 3-0 while hosting their small tournament at Crook County High School. Sisters bested Crook County at that event 3-1. La Pine shut out Trinity Lutheran and Redmond was thumped by South Salem 3-0. Today on the hardwood Bend welcomes Ashland at 6:30, while La Pine visits Glide at 6.

In boys soccer Mountain View and Caldera’s games got canceled, however, the Ridgeview boys downed North Salem 3-1. Madras beat sisters 3-2. The Ridgeview girls fell 1-0 to Thurston.

Major League Baseball Brief August 31

In Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners stuffed the Tigers 9-3.  Carlos Santana, Ty France, and Cal Raleigh each went deep for the Mariners, who improved to 71-58. Game two of three is this afternoon at 4.

The Oakland A’s beat the Nationals 10-6. Sean Murphy mashed a grand slam as the Athletics took the win. The teams meet again this afternoon at 4.

Meantime the San Francisco Giants remain on tilt, picking up their sixth straight loss this time falling to the Padres 4-3. Joc Pederson went deep for San Francisco, which fell to 61-67. The Giants try to avoid the sweep today at 12:45.

Which Ducks and Beavers Got Cut From NFL Rosters

Teams across the NFL have made final cuts to their rosters. For the Ducks, Philadelphia receiver Devon Allen, Baltimore quarterback Anthony Brown Jr, and Patriots corner Terrance Mitchell were all cut by their teams. Kayvon Thibodeaux is the only player from the 2021 Oregon team to remain on a roster. 

For the Beavers, Green Bay’s BJ Baylor, Buffalo’s Isaiah Hodges, Minnesota's Sean Mannion, and Pittsburgh's Hamilcar Rashed Jr were all cut among others.
 

Portland Timbers Meet Austin

The Portland Timbers have a mid-week match with Austin FC. The Timbers are 8th in the Western Conference and Austin is 2nd with a 15-6 record. The action begins tonight at 6.

Storm Visit Aces For Game Two

The Storm are looking to win another playoff game on the road.  Seattle takes on the Aces in Game Two of their WNBA semifinals series tonight in Las Vegas.  The Storm edged Las Vegas 76-73 in Game One to take a 1-0 series lead.  The series shifts back to Seattle on Sunday.  In other team news, Breanna Stewart was named WNBA All-Defensive First-Team, while Ezi Magbegor and Gabby Williams each made the Second-Team. 

Ridgeview Volleyball Picks Up Loss. More Prep Action Tonight

Thurston beat Ridgeview last night 3 sets to 2. The schedule opens up today with a three-team jamboree at Crook County. The Cowboys play Sisters and Caldera his afternoon and the Outlaws meet the Wolfpack once as well. Summit visits Sheldon for a jamboree. Redmond challenges South Salem at 6:30 tonight.

Also coming up tonight on the prep soccer pitch the boys from Sisters visit Madras at 5:30 elsewhere the Ridgeview boys welcome North Salem. On the girls' side Mountain View entertains Silverton while Caldera hosts Wilsonville.

Report: Garoppolo Staying With 49ers

Jimmy G is staying in San Francisco.  The Niners and Garoppolo have agreed to a restructured one-year contract worth 6.5-million-dollars.  The base salary is fully guaranteed and includes another total of 500 thousand dollars in roster bonuses and playtime bonuses that could reach a total of 16 million dollars if all bonuses are reached.  The contract also includes a no-trade and no-tag clause that ensures the 30-year-old of being Trey Lance's backup this season, and enter free agency next year. 

College Football Season Kicks Off

The 2022 college football season is starting for most teams across the country.  12th-ranked Oregon opens its season on the road against Number-3 Georgia on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.  Oregon State opens the campaign at home as it hosts Boise State on Saturday night in Corvallis.  The Beavers named Chance Nolan as their starting quarterback on Monday.  Meanwhile, Washington hosts Kent State on Saturday night.  Washington State also opens the season at home as it welcomes Idaho to Pullman on Saturday night.  

Portland Trail Blazers Cut Louzada

The Portland Trail Blazers released shooting guard Didi Louzada. Louzada played in seven games last year for Portland and scored 5 points with 2 rebounds per game. The club avoids the roughly $2 million per year contract. Portland opens the preseason on October 3rd against the Clippers.

Williams Moves To Second Round Of U.S. Open

Serena Williams isn't done yet.  The 23-time Grand Slam champion knocked off Danka Kovinic in straight sets Monday to move on to the second round of the U.S. Open in New York.  Next up, the 40-year-old is slated to face Anett Kontaveit, the number two women's tennis player in the world.

Prep Volleyball & Soccer Action Tonight. XC Coaches Polls Released

Tonight in prep volleyball action Ridgeview welcomes Thurston at 6:30. On the soccer pitch Crook County hosts Westside Christian at 4:30. Also the Early Bird IMC Preview cross country meet is this morning at 9 am. Participants from Bend, Caldera, La Pine, Redmond, Sisters, Summit, and Ridgeview will be competing. 

Also for cross country, the OSAA released its preseason coaches poll yesterday. For the boys, Summit ranked 2nd in the 5A followed by Mountain View at 8, and Bend is ranked 9th. Sisters earned a 6th place ranking in the 3A class.
 

Major League Baseball Brief August 29

In Major League Baseball the Seattle Mariners shut out the Cleveland Guardians 4-0. Dylan Moore mashed a three-run home run and Ty France hit a solo shot in the win. Seattle starts a road series with the Tigers tomorrow afternoon.

The Oakland A’s earned a 4-1 win over the Yankees yesterday which split their 4-game series at two a piece. The Athletics have the night off before visiting the nation's capitol tomorrow afternoon.

The San Francisco Giants fell 8-3 to the Twins over the weekend which gave Minnesota the sweep. The Giants have dropped four straight to fall to 61-65.  San Francisco hosts the Padres tonight at 6:45.
 

Timbers Edge Sounders

The Timbers picked up a win over the weekend.  Portland beat the Sounders 2-1 at Providence Park.  Dairon Asprilla and Sebastian Blanco scored goals in the victory.  Yeimar Gomez Andrade found the back of the net for Seattle in the eighth minute.  The Timbers moved up to eighth in the Western Conference with 36 points, while the Sounders dropped to 10th with 33.  

CFB: Beavers Favored in Week 1 While Ducks 3-Score Underdogs

The college football season is here as week 0 action concluded on Saturday. This weekend the Oregon State Beavers host Boise State. The Beavs open as a 2.5-point favorite. The 11th-ranked Ducks are 17.5-point underdogs against Georgia.

Storm Beat Aces In Game One

The Storm opened their semifinals playoff series with a victory.  Seattle beat the Aces 76-73 in Las Vegas.  Jewell Loyd scored a game-high 26 points, while Breanna Stewart chipped in with 24.  Tina Charles had a double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds.  The Storm were able to hold on after taking an 11-point lead after the first quarter.  Seattle lead the series 1-0 and the teams met for Game Two on Wednesday night.  

Prep Sports Brief: Football, Volleyball, and Soccer Continue This Weekend

In high school football teams are warming up for the season opener next week, with jamborees this weekend. Crook County and Mountain View are visiting Ridgeview for the jamboree while Redmond is hosting Caldera, La Pine, and Sisters. The Bend Lava Bears are at the Canby jamboree.

Moving to prep volleyball, the OSAA coaches polls were released earlier this week and five area schools placed in the top 10 for their classification. Bend High School is #1 in the 5A class followed by Summit at #5 and Ridgeview ranked 6th. Crook County is ranked 4th in the 4A and Sisters earned a 2nd place ranking in the 3A class.

Today Mountain View hosts a volleyball jamboree featuring Redmond, Caldera, and Sisters along with South Medford, South Eugene, Sheldon, Crater, and Burns high schools. 

And in high school soccer, yesterday marked the first game of the season for the Bend Lava Bears. The Bend boys fell to La Salle Prep with a 2-0 loss and the Bend girls fell 5-3 to the Falcons.

Oregon MBB Bests McMaster 97-82

The Oregon Ducks Men's Basketball team has improved to 4-0 on their exhibition tour of Canada. Oregon picked up a 97-82 win over McMaster University. Quincy Gurrier led the team in scoring for the third time this trip as he scored 21 points and snagged 6 boards. The Ducks wrap up action north of the border tonight against Toronto Metropolitan University.

NFL Preseason: 49ers Shutout 17-0; Raiders & Seahawks Wrap Up Tonight

The final weekend of the NFL preseason began last night as the 49ers were shut out by the Texans 17-0. Trey Lance completed 7-11 passes for just 49 yards. 

The Raiders are wrapping up their preseason slate tonight.  Las Vegas hosts the Patriots at Allegiant Stadium at 5:15. You can find coverage on NBC. The Seattle Seahawks close the preseason against the Cowboys tonight at 5. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said that Geno Smith will start at quarterback tonight, but Drew Lock will "Play most of the game" for the team. You can watch it on FOX.
 

Major League Baseball Brief August 26

In Major League Baseball yesterday the Seattle Mariners picked up a win in their home series opener as Seattle beat the Guardians 3-1. The Oakland A’s got crushed by the Yankees 13-4 in their home series opener. And the San Francisco Giants are kicking off another interleague series as they continue their road trip.  San Francisco takes on the Twins tonight in Minneapolis. The first pitch is at 5:10.

NASCAR Set To Return To Daytona Saturday

NASCAR is set to race Daytona for the Coke Sugar 400 on Saturday.  It's the second race of the season at the track following the Daytona 500.  Austin Cindric won the first race of the season earlier this year. Kyle Larson won last week at Watkins Glen.

Prep Volleyball: Summit HS Hosts Jamboree

Today the high school sports season begins with volleyball action all across the state. Here in Central Oregon, Bend, Ridgeview, Mountain View, and Sisters are at Summit High School for a jamboree. Games begin this morning at 9:30. Mountain View is also hosting a jamboree tomorrow with Burns, Sheldon, Crater, Redmond, and Sisters. 

Former Bend FC Timbers Executive Director Files Suit

In other local soccer news, former Bend FC Timbers executive director Tara Bilanski is seeking $5.1 million in damages from the organization. Bilanski is already being sued by the club for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in entry fees for its summer camps. Bilanski was the executive director from 2014 until her release in 2021.

Oregon Ducks Continue Canadian Tour Tonight

Moving to college basketball, the Oregon Ducks continue their trip in Canada today when they play McMaster University. Tip-off from Toronto is at 7 pm. Oregon will wrap up its tour north of the border tomorrow night against Toronto Metropolitan University.

Major League Baseball Brief August 25

In Major League Baseball the Seattle Mariners fell to the Nationals 3-1. Rookie Julio Rodriguez hit his 20th home run of the season in the loss.  Also, M’s starter George Kirby broke a big league record when he started the game with 24 straight strikes. Seattle hosts the Guardians today at 1:10

The Oakland A’s bested the Marlins 3-2 in 10 innings. Skye Bolt hit the walk-off sac-fly that pushed Oakland in front. The Athletics host the Yankees tonight at 6:40.

The San Francisco Giants got thumped by the Tigers 6-1. Tommy La Stella plated the lone run for San Francisco, which fell to 61-62. The Giants have tonight off before visiting the Twins tomorrow.

Also in baseball, the league office announced changes to the 2023 schedule yesterday. The number of divisional games for each team has dropped to a total of 52 games to make room for a total of 46 interleague games. For the first time in modern baseball history, every team will play every other team at some point.

Linebacker Shaquem Griffin Announces Retirement

Shaquem Griffin is announcing his retirement from the NFL.  The former Seahawks linebacker announced his decision with an article in The Players' Tribune on Wednesday.  Griffin was called "a true inspiration" by the NFL after he became the first player with one hand to be drafted in the league's modern era.  The 27-year-old was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft and went on to play 46 games with Seattle.  Griffin was waived in 2020 by the Seahawks after totaling 25 tackles and one sack over three seasons. 

High School Sports Begin Tomorrow

The high school sports season officially kicks off tomorrow! For volleyball, Mountain View, Sisters, Ridgeview, and Bend will be at the Summit Jamboree. For football, Sisters and La Pine will be at Redmond for a jamboree. Oregon Continues to Roll in Canada. Downs Carleton 92-64

On the college hardwood, the Oregon Ducks Men’s Basketball team continued their exhibition tour of Canada last night with a 92-64 win over Carleton University. Oregon held Carleton to just 23% shooting in the first half. Quincy Gurrier led the team in scoring with 15 points. Oregon has tonight off before challenging McMaster University tomorrow in Toronto.

49ers, Raiders Trim Roster

The 49ers and Raiders made their next series of cuts to their rosters.  San Francisco released tight end Tanner Hudson while waiving linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel and injured offensive lineman Sam Schlueter.  The Niners also placed cornerback Jason Verrett on the PUP list and defensive lineman Kalia Davis on the non-football injury list.  Meanwhile, Las Vegas released running back Kenyan Drake and cornerback Chris Jones.  The Raiders also waived receiver Chris Lacy and injured cornerback Cre'Von LeBlanc.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 last night. Mitch hanger and Eugenio Suarez each hit a two-run home run in the victory. The M's play Washington again today at 1:10

The Oakland A’s fell to the Marlins 5-3 yesterday. Stephen Vogt had a pair of hits and drove in a run for Oakland, which fell to 45-79. The final game of the series against Miami begins at 12:30 today.
 

Angels Baseball Team Owner Looks To Sell

The owner of the Los Angeles Angels is looking to sell the team.  Arte Moreno has owned the Major League Baseball franchise for about two decades.  In a statement, Moreno says the organization hired financial advisors to help him explore his options.  A recent political scandal in the team's hometown of Anaheim essentially killed a deal that was designed to let Moreno buy Angel Stadium as part of a massive development plan.

University of Oregon Reportedly Making Contact with Big 10

Reports have begun to gain traction saying that the University of Oregon has had contact with the Big 10 Conference. Former president Michael Schill and athletic director Rob Mullens were not a part of the discussions according to the report which cited unnamed sources. The Big 10 announced a seven-year seven billion dollar TV deal last week after the addition of USC and UCLA in 2024.

Major League Baseball Brief August 23

In Major League Baseball the Oakland A’s fell 3-0 to the Marlins in the series opener. Oakland was held to three hits as they drop to 45-78 on the season. Game two of that series is this evening at 6:40.

The San Francisco Giants are kicking off some interleague play as they continue their road trip.  San Francisco visits the Tigers this afternoon at 4 in Detroit. In some other team news, San Francisco signed right-handed reliever Ken Giles to a minor league contract.

The Seattle Mariners host the Nationals tonight at 7:10. The Mariners sit second in the AL West at 66-56 and are tied with the Blue Jays for the second American League Wild Card.
 

Kayvon Thibodeaux Goes Down With MCL Sprain

Former Duck and 5th overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux will be out for the next three to four weeks. Initial tests have revealed a sprained MCL in the right knee of the Giants rookie edge. New York remains hopeful that Thibodeaux will be available for week one against the Titans.

Raiders Release RB Drake. Also Swing Trade with MIN

The Las Vegas Raiders have released running back Kenyan Drake. The 28-year-old had rushed for 254 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games last season.  In other team news, Las Vegas traded quarterback Nick Mullens to the Vikings for a conditional 2024 seventh-round pick.

Oregon MBB Grab 78-76 Win in Canada; Ducks WBB Add New Assistant

The Oregon Ducks Men’s Basketball team continued their exhibition tour in Canada with a 78-76 win over the University of Ottawa. Quincy Guerrier scored 18 points for Oregon, and Guillaume Pepin scored 20 for the Canadians. Oregon continues its road trip tonight against Carleton University.

Also, the Oregon Women’s Basketball program is adding Sadie Edwards as an assistant coach. Edwards works as an operations manager for the New York Liberty and was a player for USC. In her four-year Trojan career, she averaged 11 points per game and 2 assists.

Oregon MBB Begins Canada Trip With 102-48 Win

The Oregon Ducks Men’s Basketball team traveled to Canada over the weekend to kick off a five-game exhibition tour north of the border. The Ducks bested McGill University 102-48. Oregon’s Nate Bittle scored 18 points and Kel’el Ware added 17 more. Oregon continues its Canada trip tonight against the University of Ottawa.

49ers & Raiders Grab Preseason Wins

On Saturday the 49ers toppled the Vikings 17-7. Nate Sudfeld completed 13-17 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the victory for the 49ers, while former Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion tossed 10-15 for 65  yards for Minnesota. San Francisco next visits the Texans on Thursday.  

The Las Vegas Raiders earned a 15-13 victory over the Dolphins. Jarrett Stidham completed 7-10 passes for 80 yards and Zamir White rushed for a touchdown. The Raiders host the Patriots on Friday.  

Major League Baseball Brief August 22

In Major League Baseball yesterday the Oakland A’s beat the Mariners 4-3 in the rubber match of their weekend series. The A’s are 45-77 and host the Marlins tonight. The first pitch is at 6:40.

Meantime the Mariners take their 66-56 record back home tomorrow to face the Nationals.

The San Francisco Giants edged the Rockies 9-8 in 11 innings. Wilmer Flores put San Francisco ahead in the top of the 11th after both teams scored a pair of runs in the 10th. The Giants visit the Tigers tomorrow.

Sue Bird Makes WNBA History as Storm Advance

Sue Bird is once again making history after the Storm eliminated the Mystics from the WNBA Playoffs with a 97-84 victory in Seattle.  At 41 years old, Bird became the oldest player in WNBA history to record a playoff double-double after finishing the game with 18 points and 10 assists. The Storm will play Las Vegas in the semifinals.

Nascar: Larson Claims at Watkins Glen

Kyle Larson is fending off the competition to claim a victory at the NASCAR cup series race at Watkins Glen International. Chase Elliot finished 4th and clinched the regular season championship during the race as he garnered the most points in the Cup Series. Nascar heads to Daytona next Saturday.

Bend Elks Place 5 Players on WCL All-League Teams

The West Coast League announced its all-league teams yesterday and five Bend Elks earned honors. Catcher Beau Sylvester, first baseman Evan Scavotto, and Elijah Jackson captured first-team placement, while Elks relief pitcher Jake Green was named to the 2nd all-league team. Decker Stedman received an honorable mention. 

The Elks finished the season 28-26 and missed the playoffs in 2022. The Corvallis Knights captured the WCL title on Monday.

Major League Baseball Brief August 19

In Major League Baseball the Oakland A’s fell to the Rangers 10-3. Sheldon Neuse homered in the losing effort for the Athletics, making them 43-76. The A's host the Mariners tonight at 6:40.

The Mariners are coming off a sweep of the Angels in anaheim.  Seattle is now 65-54 overall, currently good for the top AL Wild Card.

The San Francisco Giants couldn't scratch a run across as they fell 5-0 to the Diamondbacks at home.  San Francisco finished with just four hits. The Giants visit the Rockies this evening at 5:40.
 

Seahawks Stumped by Bears 27-11; More Preseason Games This Weekend

The Seattle Seahawks got blasted by the Bears 27-11 last night. Former Washington quarterback Jacob Eason finished 17-35 for 141 yards for Seattle while Geno Smith ended 10-of-18 for 112 yards. Seattle is 0-2 in the preseason and meets the Cowboys next week.

The 49ers are back in preseason action tomorrow.  San Francisco will visit the Minnesota Vikings. The Raiders will also take the field Saturday against the Dolphins. Both games begin at 4.

Big Ten Makes $7 Billion Dollar TV Media Rights Deal Official

The Big Ten Conference is making its seven-billion-dollar TV rights deal official.  The agreement is with multiple broadcast partners and is for seven years.  Beginning with next year's athletic season, Big Ten sports will be seen on Fox, CBS, and NBC.  This ends a four-decade run between the conference and ESPN.  This all comes with the news of UCLA and USC joining the conference in 2024.  It's also being reported the Big Ten plans on adding more schools to its roster.

NASCAR Heads To Watkins Glen Sunday

 It's time for the NASCAR Cup Series to navigate a 7-10 split as the Go Bowling at The Glen takes place at Watkins Glen on Sunday.  It's back to road course racing as NASCAR's best fight for the victory.  Kevin Harvick has been on a roll lately.  Harvick has won back-to-back races at Michigan and Richmond.

Seahawks Meet Bears in Preseason Week 2

The Seahawks are kicking off week two of the NFL preseason.  Seattle hosts the Bears this afternoon at 5 at Lumen Field.  The Seahawks had expected to start Drew Lock at quarterback, but he'll miss the game after testing positive for COVID-19.  

If we look to Saturday the Las Vegas Raiders meet the Dolphins and the 49ers visit the Vikings.

Portland Trailblazers Release 2022-23 Schedule

The Portland Trail Blazers have released their regular season schedule for the 2022-23 season.  Their first game will be on the road Wednesday, October 19th against the Sacramento Kings.  Portland's first home game is against the Phoenix Suns on Friday, October 21st. The Blazers also have 11 back-to-backs this season. All games will be broadcast on ROOT Sports.
 

Major League Baseball Brief August 18

In the Major Leagues, the Seattle Mariners hit four home runs to beat the Angels 11-7. Cal Raleigh blasted two homers and Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez each added one more. The M’s swept the series to improve to 65-54.

The Oakland A’s downed the rangers 7-2. Sean Murphy mashed a pair of home runs to up his season total to 16 long balls. The A's play the Rangers tonight before hosting the Mariners on Friday.

Also, Oakland released shortstop Elvis Andrus on Wednesday, a day after releasing outfielder Stephen Piscotty. Andrus had been batting .237 with eight home runs and 30 RBI this season.

The San Francisco Giants fell to the Diamondbacks 3-2. This loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Giants, but they have a chance to start a new one this afternoon when they wrap up the series with Arizona at 12:45.

LLWS: Bonney Lake Loses Opening Game

The Bonney Lake/Sumner Little League team suffered a tough loss in their opening game of the Little League World Series.  The team fell 11-1 in five innings to Honolulu Little League from Hawaii.  Bonney Lake/Sumner was held to one hit in the lopsided loss.  The team will next play on Saturday with their opponent still to be determined.  

WNBA: Seattle Storm Ready For First Round Matchup With Washington

The Seattle Storm are starting their best-of-three playoff series at home.  Seattle hosts the Washington Mystics tonight at 7 at Climate Pledge Arena.  The Storm enters the WNBA playoffs as the fourth seed after finishing the season 22-14.

Sabrina Ionescu's New York Liberty beat the Chicago Sky 98-91. Ionescu scored 22 points and secured seven rebounds and six assists.

Oregons Board of Trustees Approve Altman Contract

The Oregon Ducks have officially signed men's basketball coach Dana Altman to a one-year extension worth four million dollars. That will keep Altman coaching in the green and yellow through the 2027-28 season. The university’s board of trustees approved the contract yesterday. Altman also made some changes to his staff as he hired Chuck Martin from South Carolina and Armon Gate from Nebraska to be his lead assistants.

Tyrone Williams is set to join the Oregon Men's Basketball team this week. Williams was the nation's leading JUCO scorer last season poring 27 points per game on opponents and clearing 12 boards. The 6’5 guard commits to Oregon last fall.

Major League Baseball Brief August 17

The Seattle Mariners downed the Angels 8-2. Robbie Ray struck out 10 over six innings. The Mariners go for the sweep this afternoon at 1 pm. They are 11 games back of Houston for the AL West lead.

Seattle will host the next MLB All-Star game.  On Twitter, the Mariners announced the midsummer classic has been scheduled for July 11th, 2023.

The Oakland A’s bested the Rangers 5-1. J.P. Sears pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win for Oakland, which snapped a nine-game losing streak. Oakland challenges Texas again today at 5.

The San Francisco Giants earned a 2-1 walk-off win over the Diamondbacks. Brandon Crawford launched a two-run blast in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel San Francisco to victory. The Giants host Arizona again tonight at 6:45.

Little League World Series Begins in Williamsport

The Bonney Lake/Sumner Little League team is kicking off their journey at the Little League World Series.  The team won the Northwest Region after beating Bend, Oregon 3-2 in the championship game.  Bonney Lake/Sumner will take on Honolulu Little League this afternoon.  The team from Hawaii won the West Region to make it to Williamsport.  

Seahawks QB Tests for COVID Before Second Preseason Game

The Seahawks are getting closer to their second game of the preseason.  Seattle hosts the Bears tomorrow afternoon at Lumen Field.  The Seahawks announced quarterback Drew Lock will miss the game after he tested positive for COVID-19. The kickoff is at 5 pm tomorrow.

NBA To Release 2022-23 Schedule Today

The NBA is set to release its complete schedule today.  The Athletic reports the season will open on October 18th with the Philadelphia 76ers taking on the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers facing off against the Golden State Warriors.  It also reported the league's Christmas Day schedule that includes Milwaukee vs. Boston, Philadelphia against the New York Knicks, and the Phoenix Suns against the Denver Nuggets.  The full NBA schedule will be released today at noon.

Oregon Ducks Rank 11th in AP College Football Poll

The Oregon Ducks are ranked 11th in the first AP Top 25 poll of the season. Oregon is the second highest PAC 12 team on the board behind 7th ranked Utah, but they are ahead of #14 USC. The Ducks play ranked teams three times this season including the season opener against Georgia and a home date with #25 BYU.

UO Signs Dana Altman to 1-Year Extension

The Ducks are locking up their men's basketball coach for an extra year. Oregon is giving Dana Altman a one-year extension to keep him through the 2027-28 season.  The extension is worth four million dollars. In Altman's 12 seasons as coach of the Ducks, they are 300-125 and have won 20 games each year. He is the winningest head coach in Ducks history.

Sticking with hoops, the PAC-12 released its conference schedule for this upcoming season. Oregon will host Washington State on December 1st which is one night before the conference's football championship.
 

Bend Cyclists Place Well at 'Haulin Aspen' Races

Last weekend nearly 500 runners challenged themselves in the 'Haulin Aspen' races at the Wanoga Sno park. There were three different races including a 26.2-mile marathon, a 13.1-mile half marathon, and a 6.5-mile race. Jose Molina of bend earned a victory in the 6.5-mile race, winning in just under 49 minutes, while the top 3 runners in the women’s 6.5-mile race were all from Bend. Cait Vanleer, Louisa Lamarre, and Sharon Kolanik finished in order.

Corvallis Earns 6th Straight WCL Title

The West Coast League crowned the Corvallis Knights 2022 league champions last night. Corvallis shut out Bellingham 5-0 in front of over 2,000 people in the final game. The Knights have won a historic six straight league titles dating back to 2016. All told, Corvallis has won nine WCL titles since the league was created in 2005.

OSAA Still Searching for Fall Officials

Yesterday was the first day of practice for high school sports athletes across the state. Bend Elks Hosting Youth Baseball Camp This Week

The Bend Elks couldn’t crack the WCL playoffs but that doesn’t mean Vince Genna Stadium will be empty. The Elks are hosting a youth baseball camp this week from 9 to noon for kids 7-14. The cost is $50 per day or $160 for the whole week. Get details at https://www.bendelks.com/.

Corvallis Goes for 6th Straight WCL Title Tonight Against Bellingham

The stage is set for the West Coast League Championship tonight as the five-time defending champion Corvallis Knights take on the Bellingham Bells. The WCL final is one game and the winner takes it all at Goss Stadium. The Knights earned their bid to repeat after beating Ridgefield 5-2. The Bells punched their ticket after downing Wenatchee 4-2. 

The Knights have the best record in the league at 39-15, but Bellingham holds the season series two games to one. These squads have met in two title games previously, in 2014 when Bellingham won its only pennant and 2016 when Corvallis earned the trophy. The first pitch is tonight at 6:35.

High School Athletes Begin Practice Today

Today is the first official day of practice for high school athletes competing in fall sports. The first contest date for volleyball, boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls cross country is August 25th, which is next Thursday. Football players have to wait until September 1st for their first game.

Major League Baseball Brief August 15

The Seattle Mariners dropped two of three against the Rangers over the weekend including a 5-3 loss yesterday. Seattle has split its last six games and visits the Angels tonight at 6:30.

The Oakland A’s were swept by the Astros in three games. Oakland is on an eight-game losing streak. The A's visit the Rangers this afternoon at 5.

The Giants broke out the brooms for the Pirates yesterday as they earned an 8-7 walk-off win. San Francisco continues its homestand tonight as it hosts the Diamondbacks. The first pitch is at 6:45.

NFL Preseason: Raiders & 49ers Grab Wins

In the NFL, preseason is underway as every team in the league has at least one game under their belt. The Las Vegas Raiders picked up their second win of the preseason by beating the Vikings 26-20. Former Beavers QB Sean Mannion went 8/12 passing for 79 yards for Minnesota.

The 49ers earned a 28-21 victory over Green Bay. Trey Lance completed 4/5 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. 

The Seattle Seahawks fell to the Steelers 32-25. Drew lock impressed as he completed 11/15 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Geno Smith rushed for a score and threw for 101 yards.

Bend North Little League Eliminated from LLWS after 3-2 Loss to Washington

The Bend North little league team has been eliminated from World Series contention. Yesterday Bend lost to Booney Lake from Washington 3-2 to end the season. Bend took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the third, but Washington tied the game in the bottom of the 6th and walked it off in the 7th. Booney lake is headed to Williamsport Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series beginning August 17.

Corvallis Knights Beat Yakima 5-0; Advance to Divisional Championship

The West Coast League playoffs continued last night with just one game on the schedule. The Corvallis Knights earned a 5-0 victory over Yakima Valley to advance to the Divisional Championship Series. The defending champs from Corvallis dropped game one of the series, then outscored the Pippins 10-3 in the final two games.

The Divisional Championships begin tomorrow with the Knights meeting the Ridgefield Raptors for the South Division crown, while Bellingham and Wenatchee battle for the pennant in the north. The WCL title game is scheduled for Monday.

Major League Baseball Brief August 12

In the Major Leagues, the Mariners are getting their star rookie back from the injured list.  Seattle activated outfielder Julio Rodriguez from the 10-day il on Thursday.  Rodriguez was recovering from a bruised right wrist and has missed 11 straight games. The M’s visit the Rangers this afternoon at 5.

The A's are looking to snap their losing skid as they hit the road.  Oakland takes on the Astros at 5:10 in Houston.  The A's come off being swept by the Angels and have dropped five straight games.

The Giants are looking to bounce back as they return home.  San Francisco hosts the Pirates tonight at 7:15 at Oracle Park.  The Giants come off a series loss to the padres and have split their last four games.

NFL Preseason in Full Swing; SEA @ PIT - SF vs GB

The NFL Preseason is officially here after two games were played last night. The New York Giants defeated the Patriots 23-21. Elsewhere the Baltimore Ravens downed the Titans 23-10. 

The 49ers host the Packers tonight at 5:30 at Levi's stadium.  The 49ers enter the preseason with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo still on the roster. 

The Seattle Seahawks begin preseason play against the Steelers tomorrow afternoon in Pittsburgh.  The Seahawks already named Geno Smith as the team's starting quarterback for the preseason opener.

The Raiders meet the Vikings at 1:25 on Sunday.
 

NASCAR Races Richmond Sunday

The NASCAR Cup Series rolls into Richmond for the Federated Auto Parts 400 on Sunday.  Kevin Harvick is coming off a big win after a victory in Michigan last week.  It was the fourth win in five races at Michigan for Harvick.  It will be the fourth straight week Kurt Busch will miss due to concussion symptoms.
 

Bend North Little League Meets Washington for NW Regional Title

The Bend North little league team lives to fight another day. Bend beat Lewiston Idaho yesterday 4-3 to clinch a spot in the Northwest Regional championship game. Bend’s young pitcher Evan Guadalupe worked 5 innings and gave up 3 runs and struck out 10 Lewiston hitters. 

Bend will play Washington for the title and the winner heads to Williamsport Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series beginning next week. Bend has already played Washington in this tournament, it was a 10-1 loss back on Saturday. The first pitch is this afternoon at 4 pm on ESPN.

West Coast League Sends 3 Teams to Divisional Championship

The West Coast League playoffs continued last night. The defending champion Corvallis Knights earned a comeback win over Yakima Valley last night 5-3. The Knights scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to secure the win and push the series to a decisive game three. The first pitch is at 6:35 this evening.

The three other divisional series wrapped up yesterday as Ridgefield bested Portland 7-5. In the North Division, the Bellingham Bells downed the Victoria Harbourcats 4-2 and the Wenatchee Applesox crushed Kamloops 17-2. Major League Baseball Brief August 11

In the Big Leagues, the Seattle Mariners edged the Yankees 4-3 in Seattle. Carlos Santana and Sam Haggerty homered as the Mariners picked up their 61st win of the season. Also for the M's outfielder, Kyle Lewis was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, along with pitcher Brennan Bernardino. Outfielder Dylan Moore and pitcher Diego Castillo were both reinstated from the injured list on Wednesday.  

Moving along, the Oakland A’s fell to the Angels 5-4. Tony Kemp drove in three runs for the Athletics. Oakland starts a road series with the Astros tomorrow night.

The San Francisco Giants fell 13-7 to the Padres in San Diego. J.D. Davis had three hits and launched a solo bomb in the losing effort.  San Francisco starts a home series with the Pirates tomorrow night. The Giants are getting some good news on the status of Joey Bart.  The catcher underwent an MRI on Wednesday and it showed a right ankle sprain and nothing worse.  Manager Gabe Kapler said he hopes Bart can return on Friday as the team has an off day today.
 

NFL: Pro Bowl Back in Vegas; Frank Gore Arrested.

The NFL Pro Bowl is set to return to Las Vegas in 2023.  The decision comes after the city successfully hosted the all-star event earlier this year.  A hosting fee of one-point-seven-five million will be required. The exact date is still to be determined, but the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority notes the game could be played on February 5th, 2023.  This year's past event at Allegiant Stadium was proven to be a success, generating a 54-point-seven million dollar economic impact while reeling in over 45 thousand fans in attendance.

 

Police say former NFL running back Frank Gore allegedly dragged a naked woman by her hair in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  TMZ reports the incident happened on July 31st.  Police records said Gore "forcibly" gripped the woman by her hair before dragging her across the hallway of a hotel.  Gore was charged with simple assault a few days later.  He's due in court for a hearing in October.

PGA FedEx Cup Begins This Week in Memphis

The PGA FedEx Cup Playoffs kick off this week with the St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis.  Scottie Scheffler sits atop the playoff standings after earning four PGA tour wins in 2022. Coverage begins today at noon on the golf channel.

Bend Little League Battles Idaho in NW Regional Semifinal

The Bend North little league team takes to the diamond today at the Northwest Regional Tournament in San Bernardino, California. Bend will meet the Idaho state champions in an elimination contest today at noon on ESPN. The winner will play Washington tomorrow for a chance to go to the little league world series. 

West Coast League Playoffs Recap: Yakima Steals Game One From Corvallis

The West Coast League Playoffs began last night. In the South Division, the four-seed Yakima Valley upset Corvallis in the first game 7-6 and the Ridgefield Raptors downed the Portland Pickles 9-8. In the North, Bellingham bested Victoria 8-2, and Wenatchee burned Kamloops 12-1.

Rolovich Files Termination Claim Against Washington State

Nick Rolovich is filing a wrongful termination claim against his former school.  The former football head coach has filed a tort suit against Washington State and is seeking 25-million dollars.  Rolovich filed the claim after he was fired for refusing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in October of last year.  Rolovich claimed a religious exemption, but was denied and terminated during last season.  He failed to comply with Washington's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for state employees. 

Seahawks Name Smith Starter For Preseason Opener

The Seahawks are announcing their starting quarterback for their preseason opener.  Head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that Geno Smith will start Saturday afternoon's preseason game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.  Smith had been listed as first-string QB in the team's unofficial depth chart, with Drew Lock being listed at backup.  Carroll confirmed Smith will start on Saturday.  In other team news, cornerback Artie Burns left Tuesday's practice with a groin injury.  

Judge Rejects LIV Golfers Bid For FedEx Cup Playoffs

 A trio of golfers will not be able to compete in the FedEx Cup Playoffs after leaving the PGA Tour.  A federal judge denied a temporary restraining order to Talor Gooch, Matt Jones, and Hudson Swafford, who were seeking relief to participate in the first leg of the playoffs after joining the upstart LIV Golf Invitational Series.  U.S. District Court Judge Beth Labson Freeman ruled that the LIV players had not made their case of irreparable harm and agreed with the tour's position that the players' argument for emergency relief was of "their own making."
 

Redmond Season Comes to Close at Northwest Regional; Youth Baseball Brief

The Redmond Sunwest Builders Single-A American Legion baseball team fell to Minico, Idaho 12-2 in the Northwest Regional semifinal. Redmond finished tournament play with a 2-2 record and placed 4th in the northwest region.

The Bend North little league team is 1-1 in Northwest Regional tournament play thus far after falling 10-1 to the Washington state champs but beating Alaska 12-2 on Sunday. Today is an off-day for the little leaguers before playing an elimination game with Idaho tomorrow. The winner of that contest will meet Washington in the Regional Final on Thursday. West Coast League Playoffs Begin Tonight

The stage is set for the 2022 playoffs. Eight teams are in but only one will be crowned champion. The Bend Elks finished 28-26 and missed the playoffs, but the rest of the field looks like this. In the South Division, the number one seed Corvallis Knights meet the four seed Yakima Valley, while the second-seeded Portland Pickles visit third seed Ridgefield.

Oregon Ducks Earn 12th Spot in Preseason Football Polls

Yesterday the national preseason college football polls were released. The Oregon Ducks will begin the season ranked 12th in the country which is the second highest among PAC 12 teams. Utah cracked the top 10 at #8 and USC earned the 15th spot. UCLA is receiving votes, and Oregon State received two votes. 

The Ducks open the season on September 3rd against the defending national champs, and now third-ranked Georgia.

Major League Baseball Brief August 9

In the Big Leagues, the Seattle Mariners fell to the Yankees 9-4. Mitch Haniger and Cal Raleigh each hit solo home runs in the losing effort. Seattle welcomes the Yankees again tonight for the second of a three-game series. The first pitch is at 7.

The Oakland A’s were shut out by the Angles 1-0. Los Angeles's Jose Suarez tossed 7 innings of 2-hit baseball while striking out 8 Oakland batters. The teams meet this evening at 6:40.

The San Francisco Giants tossed a shutout against the Padres 1-0. Alex Wood worked 6.1 innings and 5 K’s to earn win number eight on the season. The Giants play the Padres again tonight at 6:40.
 

Kraken Hire Dave Lowry As Assistant Coach

The Kraken are making a new addition to their coaching staff.  Seattle announced Monday that it has hired Dave Lowry as an assistant coach.  Lowry joins the Kraken after spending most of last season as the interim head coach of the Jets.  He was not retained in the role after Winnipeg hired former Stars head coach Rick Bowness.  Seattle general manager Ron Francis said Lowry will be a "valuable addition to Dave Hakstol's staff."  

Redmond Legion Team in Northwest Semifinals; Youth Baseball Brief August 8th

The Redmond Sunwest Builders Single-A American Legion baseball team is playing in the semifinal in the Northwest Regional in Vernal, Utah. The Oregon state champs fell to Butte Montana 15-10 on Friday but bounced back to beat the host team 6-5 on Saturday. Yesterday Redmond downed Casper, Wyoming 10-1. Today the Builders meet Minico, Idaho in the semi-final. The first pitch is at 4.

The Medford Mustangs Triple-A American Legion team was eliminated from the Northwest Regional after losing to Idaho Falls 8-7. Idaho Falls would go on to win the tournament and has booked a trip to the World Series in Shelby, North Carolina. 

The Klamath Falls Falcons are representing the Northwest at the 18U Babe Ruth World Series in Ephrata, Washington. Klamath is 0-2 thus far including a 9-3 loss to the Lutz Hellcats from Florida. Today, the Falcons meet the Southeast Tropics from Missouri at 4.

Cascade Lakes Relay Recap

The 15th Annual Cascade Lakes Relay took place over the weekend. The 36-leg 216-mile relay race began Friday at Diamond Lake and finished at Riverbed Park in Bend. A team called 'The Fellowship of the Run' finished in 24 hours, 21 minutes, and 28 seconds to claim victory. 
 

Elks Eliminated From Playoffs; Vince Genna Stadium to Host More Baseball

The Bend Elks lost last night to the Cowlitz Black Bears 8-7. The Elks jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage after 3 innings but saw that lead slip away by the 7th when the Black Bears plated five runs of their own. Cowlitz scored two more in the 8th to seal the ballgame.

With this loss, the Elks are eliminated from playoff contention as the Yakima Valley Pippins scooped up the fourth playoff spot in the South Division. They won their final four games of the regular season to dispatch the Elks who lost seven of their final 10 games.

Sabrina Ionescu First to 500 Points, 200 Rebounds, 200 Assists

Former Oregon Duck and WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu became the first player in WNBA history to score 500 points, secure 200 rebounds, and dish 200 assists in a single season. The New York Liberty lost to the Phoenix Mercury that night 76-62.

Redmond SunWest Builders at Northwest Regional; Statewide Youth Baseball Brief

In youth baseball, the Redmond SunWest Builders Single-A American Legion team begins play in the northwest regional in Vernal, Utah. The Builders meet the Butte Miners from Montana. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.

The Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team is representing Oregon at the Triple-A northwest regional. The Mustangs fell to Billings, Montana yesterday 5-3 to send them to the losers bracket. Medford faces elimination today at 4 when they play Eagle River, Alaska.

The Klamath Falls Falcons 18U Babe Ruth ballclub is in Ephrata, Washington for the Babe Ruth World Series. The team arrived yesterday for opening ceremonies which begin today, with the first contest coming up tomorrow. The Falcons first task is the Alabama Raw Dogs. The first pitch is at 9 am.

Bend Elks Snap the Streak; Shutout Knights 3-0

The Bend Elks got back in the win collum last night after shutting out Corvallis 3-0. This ends a four-game skid for the Elks and snapped a 16-game winning streak for the Knights.

The Elks finished with three runs, four hits, and no errors while leaving just six runners aboard. Corvallis had no runs on five hits with one error and stranded seven. The game was scoreless going into the top of the eighth when Christian Cooney hit an RBI triple and scored on an error to put Bend ahead, and they never looked back.

The Elks return home tonight for the final three games of the regular season. The Elks still hold a game advantage over Yakima for the final playoff spot in the South Division, and they host the Cowlitz Black Bears tonight at 6:35. Oregon MBB: Dana Altman makes Changes With Assistaints

Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman is making changes to his assistant coaching staff. Altman hired Armon Gates from Nebraska after promoting longtime assistant Kevin McKenna. Gates signed a 2-year deal and will earn $325,000 this season, and $350,000  next year with bonuses on performance.

Also at Oregon, former linebacker Adrian Jackson Jr. is entering the transfer portal. Jackson is entering his fifth-year redshirt junior season and had 16 tackles last season for the Ducks.
 

Major League Baseball Brief July 5th

In the Big Leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed the sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 5-3 win yesterday. The Giants, now 51-55, have tonight off before visiting the Oakland A’s for the Battle of the Bay! 

The Athletics escaped LA with an 8-7 victory over the Angels. The Angles belted seven home runs but still came up short. The A’s wait to meet the Giants tomorrow.

Raiders Top Jaguars In Hall Of Fame Game

The Raiders are opening the 2022 NFL preseason with a win.  Las Vegas topped the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-11 in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.  Jarrett Stidham started the game under center for the Raiders and complete eight of 15 passes for 96 yards.  Stidham also ran for a 12-yard score.  Former Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton completed 10-of-17 passes for 94 yards for the Jaguars.  

American Legion Baseball: Medford Wins and Redmond Begins Saturday

In Legion baseball, the Oregon state champion Medford Mustangs opened up the northwest regional tournament with a win over Yakima 9-7. The Mustangs challenge the Montana state champs from Billings tonight at 7:30. The Triple A American Legion World Series begins August 11th in Shelby, North Carolina

The Redmond Sunwest Builders baseball team owns the Single A Oregon legion crown, and they begin regional play tomorrow in Vernal, Utah. Redmond will meet the Butte Miners from Montana to open the tournament on Friday. 

Bend Elks Fall 5-4 to Corvallis. Losers of 4 Straight

The Bend Elks lost to the Corvallis Knights yesterday 5-4. Bend led the contest in the 7th inning but a wild pitch followed by a single allowed the red hot Knights to take a one-run advantage that they held for the rest of the game. Corvallis has won 16 straight, and this extends the Elks losing streak to four games.

Bend is still a game up on Yakima for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Southern Division after the Pippins fell 8-3 to Wenatchee. The Elks wrap up the series with Corvallis tonight at 6:35 before heading home for the final three games of the regular season.

In the big leagues, the Seattle Mariners claimed a series win after downing the Yankees 7-3. Luis Castillo earned his first victory since being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds. Castillo allowed three runs over six and two-thirds innings. The M’s have tonight off before beginning a series with the Angels tomorrow.

The Giants were dealt a loss by the Dodgers 3-0. San Francisco remains in the city of angels this afternoon for the final game of four at 12:45.

Finally, the Oakland A’s topped the Angels 3-1. Sean Murphy had a pair of hits and launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning. The A’s go for the sweep today at 1.
 

NFL HOF Game Tonight: JAX vs LV

The NFL returns for the first game of the preseason.  The Jacksonville Jaguars are taking on the Las Vegas Raiders in the hall of fame game in Canton, Ohio tonight. The kickoff is at 5 on NBC.

Portland Timbers Play to Draw with Nashville 1-1

The Portland Timbers finished in another draw last night finishing 1-1 with Nashville. This is Portland’s league leading 11th tie of the season. The Timbers are in Dallas on Saturday.

Bend Pitcher Named No. 1 Prospect in America

Softball America named Bend’s Addisen Fisher the number one prospect out of the class of 2024 nationwide. Fisher held opposing batters to a .096 average and .046 ERA for Bend en route to a state semifinal appearance in 2022.

Elks Shutout by Corvallis 12-0

The Bend Elks were shut out by the Corvallis Knights last night 12-0. The Elks only mustered two hits and four total base runners on the night as Brady Kasper and Jabin Trosky tallied the two knocks. The Knights remain scorching hot as they picked up their 15th straight win.

This moves the Elks to 26-23 and they are still in position to make the playoffs with five games to go. They hold a game lead over Yakima Valley for the fourth and final spot out of the South Division. The Pippins host Wenatchee tonight.

Oregon Ducks Land 5-Star Recruit; Still Waiting on City Council

The University of Oregon athletics department is waiting on approval from the Eugene city council on a land exchange that would allow the construction of a new 170,000-square-foot indoor practice facility. The project was announced last October and was to be completed in 2024.

The Ducks men's basketball team is landing a five-star recruit from the 2023 class.  Forward Kwame Evans told ESPN he is committing to play for Oregon.  Evans chose the ducks over offers from Arizona, Kentucky, and various other schools.
 

Major League Baseball Brief 8/3

In the Big Leagues, the Seattle Mariners beat the Yankees yesterday 8-6. Today, newly acquired All-Star pitcher Luis Castillo will make his first start for the M’s against his former team in the Bronx. The first pitch is this morning at 10.

The Oakland A’s lost to the Angels last night 3-1. That is Oakland’s 3 third straight loss but they do have a shot at redemption today as they challenge the halos at 6:30. Yesterday during the trade deadline, Oakland traded catcher Austin Allen to the Cardinals for minor league pitcher Carlos Guarate.  

The San Francisco Giants were also active during yesterday's deadline as they traded first baseman Darin Ruf to the Mets for infielder J.D. Davis and three minor leaguers. San Francisco also dealt catcher Curt Casali and pitcher Matthew Boyd to the Mariners for minor league pitcher Michael Stryffeler and catcher Andy Thomas.

Finally, in the MLB yesterday the Los Angeles Dodgers announced the news on Twitter that legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully is dead at the age of 94.

Seahawks Still Searching for QB1

The Seahawks are continuing with another week of training camp.  Seattle has yet to name its starting quarterback as Drew Lock and Geno Smith battle for the starting job under center.  Though offensive coordinator Shane Waldron said Tuesday that the team has "a plan" for its regular season opener on September 12th against the Denver Broncos.  Smith has led the first-team offense through drills at camp so far.  

Bend Lava Bear Softball Coach Retires

The Bend Lava Bears softball team which spent most of last season ranked no. 1 in the 6A coaches poll, is looking for a new coach after the retirement of Tom Mauldin. Bend earned a school record 29 wins last year before falling to Oregon City in the semifinal.

Bend Elks Challenge Red Hot Corvallis Knights

The Bend Elks begin their final road series of the regular season tonight when they visit Goss Stadium to take on the Corvallis Knights. The Knights have run up an astounding 14 straight wins and haven’t lost since July 16th. They are in first place in the WCL South Division with a 36-12 mark,

Bend is 26-22 on the year and if the season were to end today, the Elks would make the postseason. They hold the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division and have a two-game advantage over Yakima Valley.

Major League Baseball Brief: Trade Deadline

The Seattle Mariners fell to the Yankees in the series opener 7-2. Game two of the three-game set is this afternoon at 4.

The San Francisco Giants got rolled by the Dodgers, losing 8-2. The Giants are 51-52 and 18 games back of the division-leading Dodgers, as the teams continue the series tonight at 6:45.

Today is the MLB trade deadline and the Oakland A's are sending starting pitcher Frankie Montas to the New York Yankees in a six-player trade.  The A's are also including relief pitcher Lou Trivino. Pitchers Luis Medina and JP Sears along with infielder Cooper Bowman are heading to the A's.
 

Oregon Ducks Land 4-Star Defensive Lineman

The Oregon Ducks earned another four-star recruit as Terrance Green is the newest addition to the 2023 recruiting class. Green is a defensive lineman from Cypress, Texas and chose Oregon over Michigan State, Texas, Miami, and Florida.

Pete Carroll Tests Positive for COVID-19; Jamal Adams Returns to Practice

The Seahawks are continuing with another week of training camp.  Seattle announced Monday that head coach Pete Carroll has tested positive for COVID-19.  Carroll is remaining at home as he deals with mild symptoms.  On a more positive note, safety Jamal Adams practiced with the team on Monday and wore a protective cast on his left hand.  Adams will reportedly wait until after the season for a potential surgery on his injured fingers.  
 

Bend Elks Drop Weekend Series to Portland

The Bend Elks dropped two of three to the Portland Pickles this weekend including a 6-2 loss last night. The Elks only win of the series was on Friday when they downed the Pickles 10-9. In that contest, Bend earned a walkoff win as Brady Kasper got the knock that scored the winning run. 

With the losses, Bend is now 26-22 overall and still holds a two-game lead over Yakima Valley for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the Southern Division.

The Elks are off tonight before visiting the defending league champ, and current division-leading Corvallis Knights. The first pitch is at 6:35 tomorrow.

Major League Baseball Brief August 1

The Seattle Mariners lost last night in Houston 3-2. The Mariners are also placing their star rookie on the injured list.  Seattle moved outfielder Julio Rodriguez on the 10-day IL yesterday after he underwent X-rays on his right hand.  The team announced the X-rays came back negative, but according to reports, Rodriguez is still sore.  In other Mariners' news, newly acquired pitcher Luis Castillo is set to make his debut on Wednesday against the Yankees. The Mariners are in New York tonight to kick off the series at 4.

Moving to the Oakland A’s who dropped two games to the White Sox over the weekend including a 4-1 final last night. The A’s have tonight off before visiting the Angels tomorrow.

And the San Francisco Giants tossed a shutout, beating the Cubs 4-0. The Giants host the Dodgers today at 6:45.  In other team news, the Giants acquired shortstop Dixon Machado in a trade with the Cubs.

The final three holdouts from the Oregon State baseball draft class signed with their MLB teams over the weekend as Wade Meckler, Gavin Logan, and Jake Pfennigs signed with the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Oakland Athletics, respectively.

Jimmy Shane Claims HAPO Columbia Cup

31-year-old Jimmy Shane piloted his U-1 Miss-Homestreet Bank Unlimited hydroplane to the winners circle securing the 56th annual HAPO Columbia Cup race in Tri-Cities. Shane has won three of the first four races on the H-1 Unlimited Series tour as the hydroplanes move on to Seattle this week for the Seafair races on Lake Washington.

49ers Extend Deebo Samuel

The 49ers are extending their top wideout.  San Francisco has agreed to a three-year, 73.5-million-dollar extension with wide receiver Deebo Samuel.  The deal includes 58.1-million-dollars in guarantees.  Samuel had been seeking a lucrative deal to remain in San Francisco, and previously requested a trade from the Niners in April.  The 26-year-old has played in 38 regular season games since he was selected with the 36th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the 49ers out of South Carolina.

Tyler Reddick Wins NASCAR Cup Series At Indianapolis

Tyler Reddick survived and outlasted a wild road course NASCAR Cup Series race to win the Verizon 200 at The Brickyard.  Reddick led 38 laps in the overtime win.  Austin Cindric and Harrison Burton finished second and third respectively.  Todd Gilliland and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top five.
