Canyon Creek Complex Nearly 50-percent Contained

(John Day, OR)  --  Officials say the Canyon Creek Complex of wildfires near John Day is now 49-percent contained.  The fires have burned more than 101-thousand acres.  About 760 people are involved in fighting the fires, which have destroyed at least three-dozen homes.  After Saturday's high winds, conditions were improved for firefighters yesterday as they worked to keep the flames from spreading.

Police Look For Missing Aloha Teen

(Aloha, OR)  --  Aloha police are looking for a missing 14-year-old boy who's said to be endangered.  Giovanni Garcia-Delgado was reported missing around 3:30 yesterday afternoon from his home.  Family members say the teen suffers from anxiety and has recently indicated he could do harm to himself.  Giovanni Garcia-Delgado is described as standing five-feet-two, weighing 110 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair, last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans, and black-rimmed glasses.  Anyone knowing his whereabouts is asked to call 911.

Clackamas County Deputy Injured In Crash

(Damascus, OR)  --  A Clackamas County sheriff's deputy is recovering from a broken leg after his patrol car was hit in a crash on Highway 212.  Authorities say an 18-year-old veered into the oncoming lane and hit the patrol car near Southeast Rust Way in Damascus around 6:50 yesterday morning.  The teen had no apparent injuries.  Deputy Garrett Grimm suffered a hairline fracture to his left fibula and had cuts on his face.

Most In Portland Have Electricity Back

(Portland, OR)  --  Most Portland General Electric customers have their power back, after nearly 27-thousand lost electricity during Saturday's windstorms.  Officials say less than 400 customers are still experiencing outages.  Crews have been working through the night to get all power restored, but PGE says some residents may be without power well into the morning.

Three Fallen Firefighters Honored

(Wenatchee, WA)  --  A fund that's been set up by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is assisting the families, friends, and colleagues of three U.S. Forest Service firefighters who died while battling the Okanogan complex of wildfires in Washington.  Twenty-year-old Tom Zbyszewski , 26-year-old Andrew Zajac, and 31-year-old Richard Wheeler died in Twisp on August 19th when their truck crashed down an embankment as they tried to escape the flames.  Thousands gathered yesterday at the Toyota Center in Wenatchee, about 90 miles from where the firefighters died, to honor the men.  At least 80 vehicles took part in a procession leading to the service.

Gas Prices Drop

(Portland, OR)  --  Gas prices in Portland are still steadily declining.  Triple-A's latest survey shows the average for regular is a penny lower than yesterday, at two-85 a gallon.  That's about nine cents a gallon cheaper than a week ago.

John Day Fire Continues To Grow

(John Day, OR)  --  The Canyon Creek Complex fire is getting larger.  Officials say the huge wildfire, located near John Day, has scorched 134 square miles, an increase of 15 percent since Tuesday.  The Canyon Creek fire started as two separate lightning-caused fires on August 12th, and has destroyed at least 39 homes and 50 other structures.

Escaped Prisoner Apprehended

(Salem, OR)  --  A Santiam Correctional Institution inmate who escaped Monday from a work crew in Salem is back behind bars.  Officials say William Arch Beebe walked away from the work detail near Richmond Elementary School around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.  Beebe was arrested yesterday in Salem.

Fuel Prices Still Slipping

(Portland, OR)  --  Prices at the gas pump are still heading down in the Portland area.  Triple-A reports the average for regular is about two-88 a gallon, down a penny-and-a-half from yesterday.  It's also more than eight cents a gallon below the average of a week ago.

Report: Many Washington Toddlers Not Vaccinated On Time

(Atlanta, GA)  --  New figures issued by the Centers for Disease Control show about two-thirds of toddlers in Washington state receive their vaccinations on time.  Officials say the trend means many kids in the state are at risk of getting preventable diseases, such as measles and whooping cough.  The CDC says last year, about 67 percent of children had been fully vaccinated by age three.  However, the agency says the coverage rate for the hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine in Washington was nearly 80 percent, which exceeded the national rate.
 

St. Mary's Changes Employment Policy

(Portland, OR)  --  Effective immediately, St. Mary's Academy in Portland has a new employment policy.  The school's board has voted unanimously to add "sexual orientation" to its equal employment opportunity policy, following controversy over the school withdrawing a job offer it made to a woman who's gay.  School president Christina Friedhoff says St. Mary's, an all-girl Catholic private school, is a "diverse community that welcomes and includes gay and lesbian students, faculty, alumnae, parents and friends."  "Willamette Week" quoted Lauren Brown as saying the school withdrew its offer to hire her as a school counselor after she told an administrator she's gay.

Man Accused Of Embezzling From Nonprofit

(Portland, OR)  --  A man accused of embezzling five-thousand-dollars from a Portland nonprofit is facing charges.  Prosecutors say 53-year-old Kevin Robert Gifford stole the money from the David Douglas Historical Society while serving as the organization's treasurer.  Gifford appeared in court yesterday and pleaded not guilty.  The David Douglas Historical Society is reported to be closing its doors, saying the embezzlement left it on unstable financial ground.

Third Arson Case At Gresham Building Investigated

(Portland, OR)  --  Officials say three fires have been intentionally set at the same building in Gresham in a period of 48 hours.  The third fire took place around 5:30 yesterday morning at the building in the 18-thousand-500 block of East Burnside.  Gresham Fire Battalion Fire Chief Jason McGowan told KOIN-TV transients have been known to sleep inside the vacant building.  No injuries have been reported in any of the three fires.  
 

Okanogan Complex Fire Now 17 Percent Contained

(Okanogan County, WA)  --  Officials say firefighters are making some progress in containing the Okanogan Complex wildfire in north central Washington.  The fire is now 17 percent contained, but has destroyed 40 homes and at least 45 outbuildings so far.  About 77-hundred homes are reported to be under some level of evacuation.  More than 13-hundred people are engaged in battling the fire.

Woman Dies In Northeast Portland Crash

(Portland, OR)  --  Police are investigating a crash that left a woman dead in Northeast Portland.  Authorities say the woman lost control of her vehicle and slammed into a tree around ten o'clock last night in the five-thousand block of Northeast Mallory Avenue.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.  Her name hasn't been released.

Gas Prices Fall Further

(Portland, OR)  --  Gasoline prices continue to fall in the Portland area.  Triple-A reports the average for a gallon of regular is down two cents from yesterday, to two-89 a gallon.  That's eight-cents a gallon below the average of a week ago.

Three-alarm Blaze Damages Commercial Building

(Clackamas, OR)  --  Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a three-alarm fire that damaged a commercial building in Clackamas.  Officials say the blaze was reported around 5:30 yesterday afternoon at the building in the 15-thousand-800 block of Southeast Piazza Avenue.  The fire was confined to a business that makes devices for extracting teeth.  No one was injured.

National Guard Troops To Join Wildfire Battles

(Salem, OR)  --  About 125 National Guard troops will be deployed later today to help fight wildfires across Oregon.  Governor Kate Brown has mobilized the troops to assist depleted firefighting forces.  The Guard troops completed basic field training yesterday, and will back up first-responders and focus mainly on extinguishing hot spots.  Another 250 National Guard troops are beginning training for deployment this weekend.

WA Needs More 911 Dispatchers

(Marysville, WA)  --  The state of Washington is in need of qualified 911 dispatchers.  The Washington State Patrol says a shortage of operators is leading to longer wait times for those in need.  Trooper Mark Francis told Q-13 that WSP is actively recruiting qualified dispatchers, with candidates required to pass a thorough background check and a polygraph test.  Those interested in finding out more can log on to wsp.wa.gov/employment.

Former Multnomah County Commissioner Dies

(Portland, OR)  --  Family members say former Multnomah County Commissioner Tanya Collier has died after dealing with health issues for several years.  Collier, who also served as a Metro councilor and Oregon Nurses Association labor negotiator, died Friday.  She was also an advocate for women's rights and marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment.  Collier was 68 years old.

Klamath County Sheriff Being Investigated

(Klamath Falls, OR)  --  Klamath County Sheriff Frank Skrah is the subject of a criminal investigation by the state.  "The Oregonian" quotes sources as saying Skrah is being investigated for use of excessive force, including allegations the sheriff punched a suspect who was handcuffed.  Seven of the county's 30 deputies have also been placed on leave.  Skrah was elected sheriff of Klamath County in 2012.

Motorcycle Officer Hit While Responding To Crash

(Beaverton, OR)  --  A Beaverton motorcycle officer is recovering after being hit by a car while responding to a report of a crash.  Officer Ryan Mills was hit around 9:30 a.m. yesterday in the area of Southwest Denney Road and Southwest 103rd Avenue.  He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Fugitive Caught In North Plains

(North Plains, OR)  --  A parole fugitive who shot a detective and killed a Hillsboro Police Department K-9 in 1997 is back in custody.  Authorities say Reiner Schmolling, Jr. was tracked down by K-9 units and apprehended yesterday in a wooded area near North Plains.  Schmolling was being sought after it was learned he was involved in a fight with another man Monday.  He's now being held in the Washington County Jail.

(Portland, OR)  --  The price of gasoline in Portland continues to fall.  Triple-A reports the average for regular is two-91 a gallon, down a penny from yesterday.  It's also about seven cents a gallon below the average of a week ago.
 

Police ID Body Found In Columbia River

(Portland, OR)  --  Sheriff's deputies say a body recovered Saturday from the Columbia River is that of a Portland man.  Officials say 62-year-old Gregory Loren Whitlock was swimming in the river near a cabin cruiser west of the Suttle Road Moorage when he drowned around 4:35 Saturday afternoon.  Deputies say another swimmer who was with Whitlock was not successful in keeping him from slipping below the surface.  The drowning has been ruled an accident.

Woman Wounded In Shooting At Portland Park

(Portland, OR)  --  A woman is being treated at a hospital, after being wounded in a shooting at a Portland park.  Witnesses reported hearing a number of gunshots around noon yesterday in the area of Northeast 6th Avenue and Alberta Street.  Police say a 20-year-old woman was sitting with two men on a park bench when she was shot in the hand by someone in an SUV.  Authorities say the suspect is an African-American male who was in a light-colored, smaller-model SUV with several other men.

Fire Quickly Extinguished At Portland School

(Portland, OR)  --  Investigators are trying to find out what caused a fire at Portland's Harrison Park School.  The fire was reported around 2:07 yesterday afternoon at the school in the 22-hundred block of Southeast 87th.  Firefighters arrived and found there was a small fire in one of the walls, and quickly extinguished the blaze.  Harrison Park School serves students in grades K-through-eight.

Police: Alcohol May Have Been Factor In Pedestrian's Death

(Milwaukie, OR)  --  Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the death of a pedestrian in Milwaukie.  Authorities say 44-year-old Stephanie Chestnut was hit by a car as she tried to cross Highway 99 E Sunday night near Holly Avenue.  Chestnut died later at a hospital.  Oregon State Police say it's possible Chestnut was drinking prior to the crash.

Okanogan Wildfire Now Largest In State's History

(Twisp, WA)  --  Officials say the Okanogan Complex has grown to be the largest wildfire in Washington state history.  The five wildfires are reported to be covering more than 400 square miles, slightly more than last year's Carlton Complex fires.  The Okanogan fire is reported to be about ten-percent contained, but is still threatening five-thousand homes.  The National Weather Service says a Red Flag warning will continue for much of central Washington through this evening.

Gresham Man Faces Arson, Drug Charges

(Gresham, OR)  --  Police have a Gresham man in custody after he was accused of setting a fire at an apartment building.  Authorities say the fire was started Saturday in a vacant unit in the 800 block of Northeast 162nd, but didn't cause much damage.  Police say that when they arrested 29-year-old Michael Paul Downey, they also found he was carrying a meth pipe.  Downey's bail is set at 255-thousand-dollars.

Man Pleads Not Guilty To Raceway Assault

(Portland, OR)  --  Bail is set at a half-million dollars for a man accused of assaulting and killing another man at Portland International Raceway.  Fifty-year-old Michael Taylor is facing charges of manslaughter and assault in the July death of 61-year-old Anthony Mancuso.  Mancuso died in a hospital, the day after being punched by Taylor.  Officials say Mancuso died not from the punch, but from the ensuing fall that fractured his skull.

Fuel Prices Continue To Slip

(Portland, OR)  --  Triple-A reports another decrease in Portland-area fuel prices.  The average for regular is down more than a penny from yesterday, to about two-93 a gallon.  That's six-and-a-half cents below the average at this time last week.

Police: Man Stabbed Over Argument Over Potato Chips

(Portland, OR)  --  A 56-year-old man is in custody, following a stabbing in North Portland.  Police say Clarence Dorn stabbed 30-year-old Robert Alexander in the neck after accusing him of stealing potato chips from a child's plate.  Alexander was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.  Dorn is facing an assault charge.

Brown Activates More Guard Troops To Battle Fires

(Salem, OR)  --  Another 250 National Guard troops will begin training this week to assist in firefighting efforts across Oregon.  Governor Kate Brown announced the action Saturday after activating 125 Guard members earlier last week.  Most of the Willamette Valley and Columbia Gorge are under a thick haze from winds blowing smoke from the wildfires.  The haze is expected to linger through today, and people with respiratory issues are urged to stay indoors.

Sixteen WA Wildfires Cover 920 Square Miles

(Okanogan County, WA)  --  Sixteen large wildfires that are burning across central and eastern Washington are covering an estimated 920 square miles.  More than 200 homes have been destroyed and another 12-thousand remain under threat.  Smoke is lifting over some areas of north-central Washington, but fire officials warn that smoke often works as a ceiling on fire activity and when it lifts, fire activity often increases because of decreased humidity and rising temperatures.  Three firefighters who were injured where three others were killed near Twisp are now recovering at home, but a fourth remains in a Seattle hospital.

Motorcyclist Killed In Crash

(Portland, OR)  --  A motorcyclist is dead, following a crash involving a pickup truck in North Portland.  Portland police say the crash happened around 8:30 last night in the 61-hundred block of North Marine Drive.  The motorcyclist died at the scene, and the driver of the pickup suffered traumatic injuries but is expected to survive.  The crash remains under investigation.

Federal Aid To Assist Firefighting Efforts In Washington

(Fairchild AFB, WA)  --  Firefighting efforts in central and eastern Washington will benefit from an infusion of new equipment and fresh personnel from federal sources.  The "Spokesman-Review" reports a new firefighting mobilization center was established yesterday at Fairchild Air Force Base.  The base will be the staging area for 20 large fire engines and ten water tankers from Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Colorado.  About 200 National Guard members will undergo critical fire training and be sent in to relieve fatigued firefighters.
 

Hiker Found Safe In Mt. Hood National Forest

(Hood River, OR)  --  Officials say a 75-year-old hiker who got lost in the Mount Hood National Forest last week is now safe.  David Bullock and his wife were hiking together on a trail from Laurence Lake, but got separated around noon Thursday.  Bullock, along with the couple's three dogs, were found in good condition yesterday afternoon.  Bullock, who's an experienced hiker, says he survived on stream water and stayed warm by staying in a shelter he built.
 

Deadly Fire In Aloha Investigated

(Aloha, OR)  --  Authorities continue to investigate a deadly fire at an Aloha duplex.  The fire, which happened Saturday night in the 19-thousand block of Teddy Rose Court, left a man dead.  An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of his death.  Three people in the adjoining unit were displaced by the fire, of which investigators are trying to determine the cause.

(Portland, OR)  --  The price of gasoline is still heading down in the Portland area.  Triple-A reports the average for regular is down a half-cent from yesterday, to just under two-94 a gallon.  That's a nickel a gallon below the average of a week ago.

Driver Shot At, Crashes Into Pole In North Portland

(Portland, OR)  --  Police say gunshots that were fired in North Portland caused a driver to swerve and crash into a pole.  The shooting happened around eight o'clock last night in the area of North Vancouver Avenue and Holman Street.  Police say the driver suffered injuries related to the crash, not gunfire.  The suspect was seen in a white car that sped away following the shooting. 
 

Police: Missing Man Is Legally Blind

(Forest Grove, OR)  --  Forest Grove police are looking for a 72-year-old man who's legally blind and endangered.  Authorities say Franklin Raymond Kitchen walked away from his home in the 38-hundred block of Pacific Avenue in Forest Grove late Wednesday night.  Police say Kitchen, who just moved to the area from California and is unfamiliar with his surroundings, may be using public transportation.  Kitchen is described as having long, white hair and a beard, standing five-feet-ten, weighing 130 pounds, and was last seen wearing camouflage cargo shorts and a buttoned-up shirt.   
 

Firefighters Who Died Near Twisp Identified

(Twisp, WA)  --  The U.S. Forest Service is investigating the deaths of three firefighters who were battling the Twisp River fire in Washington.  They've been identified as 20-year-old Tom Zbyszewski [[ buh-SHEV-skee ]], 26-year-old Andrew Zajac [[ ZAY-jak ]], and 31-year-old Richard Wheeler.  Officials say the men's vehicle crashed and was overtaken by the flames before they could escape.  Another firefighter who was seriously injured, Daniel Lyon of Puyallup, remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. 
 

Suspect Sought In Marion County Stabbing

(Salem, OR)  --  A man who's considered armed and dangerous is being sought in connection with a stabbing in Salem.  Sheriff's deputies say 20-year-old Carlos Miguel Martin stabbed another man in the four-thousand block of Northeast Lancaster Drive yesterday.  The victim is being treated at a hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening.  Martin is described as Hispanic, five-feet-six, weighing 130 pounds, and last seen wearing a black shirt and black shorts. 
 

Tonasket Evacuated As Okanogan Fires Rage

(Tonasket, WA)  --  The entire town of Tonasket, Washington is under mandatory evacuation orders as the Okanogan [[ OH-ka-NOG-un ]] Complex of fires continues to burn.  Residents of the Okanogan County town have been advised to take shelter at Brewster High School.  Long stretches of S-R 20 and U.S. Highway 97 remain closed.  Officials say dry, warm conditions continue, and a red-flag warning remains in effect through eleven o'clock tonight. 
 

Council Votes To Decommission Mt. Tabor Reservoirs

(Portland, OR)  --  It appears the three open reservoirs at Mount Tabor will be disconnected from Portland's water supply.  The City Council has approved legal findings by the City Attorney's Office to support the Water Bureau's request to decommission the reservoirs.  The "Portland Tribune" reports the request includes an application for a land-use change that's necessary to have the reservoirs disconnected from the city's water distribution system.  The Water Bureau says the work is necessary to comply with EPA rules intended to prevent the spread of water-borne illnesses. 

Homes Evacuated During Estacada Brush Fire

(Estacada, OR)  --  Crews are mopping up following a brush fire in Estacada [[ es-tuh-KAY-duh ]] that prompted evacuation of at least two homes.  Officials say the fire was reported around 3:50 yesterday afternoon in the area of South Redland Road and Southeast Fellows Road.  The fire burned 12 to 15 acres before it was extinguished, and no homes were damaged.  The blaze may have been caused by a truck that backfired. 

Inslee Requests Federal Help To Fight Wildfires

(Olympia, WA)  --  Governor Jay Inslee is asking for a federal Emergency Declaration to cover some of the costs related to multiple wildfires in Eastern Washington.  The request, which was sent to FEMA, says eleven counties and four tribes are affected or threatened by the fires.  Officials say the fires have burned more than 235-thousand acres and destroyed more than 50 homes and 60 other structures.  If the request is approved, the emergency declaration would make financial assistance available to the state, eligible local jurisdictions, and private nonprofit organizations.

(Portland, OR)  --  Gas prices are still falling in the Portland area.  Triple-A reports the average for a gallon of regular is two-97 a gallon, a penny lower than yesterday's average. It's also nearly a nickel a gallon below the average of a week ago. 

Brown To Tour Scorched Areas Of Eastern Oregon

(Salem, OR)  --  Governor Kate Brown will take a tour of areas of eastern Oregon that have been scorched by wildfires.  Today, she's scheduled to visit John Day, one of the communities devastated by the lightning-caused Canyon Creek Complex fire.  The fire has destroyed more than 43-thousand acres and 26 homes.  Officials say more than 560 firefighters are involved in battling the fire.

Pedestrian Seriously Injured In Milwaukie

(Milwaukie, OR)  --  A man is being hospitalized, after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing a street in Milwaukie.  Police say 68-year-old Albert Duane Daney was crossing Southeast Johnson Creek Boulevard in the 53-hundred block around 3:30 yesterday morning when he was hit by a delivery truck.  The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police.  Daney is listed in critical condition, but is expected to recover.
 

One Critically Hurt In Washington Motel Blast

(Bremerton, WA)  --  Officials say a gas leak preceded an explosion that left one person critically injured at a Motel 6 in Bremerton, Washington.  Police say an employee with One Cascade Natural Gas suffered severe burns and lacerations and is listed in critical condition following the blast, which reportedly knocked firefighters back 20 feet.  Authorities say gas company workers were at the scene and the motel was being evacuated when the explosion happened around 8:24 last night, destroying about a quarter of the main building.  Police say there have been no reports of other serious injuries related to the explosion.
 

Independent Party Of Oregon Achieves Major-Party Status

(Salem, OR)  --  The Independent Party of Oregon now has major-party status.  Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins says the party has more than five percent of the registered voters in the state, as required by law.  The status means the state will finance and administer the Independent Party of Oregon's 2016 primary election.  The party's winning candidates will appear on general election ballots, along with Democratic and Republican candidates. 
 

Newberg City Manager's Resignation Accepted

(Newberg, OR)  --  Newberg City Manager Jacque [[ jackie ]] Betz will get a settlement of nearly 100-thousand-dollars following her resignation.  The Newberg City Council accepted Betz's resignation last night, and agreed on a severance package that includes six months' salary, along with compensation for health-care and accrued vacation.  Newberg city officials say an investigation that was conducted after Betz suspended Police Chief Brian Casey for no apparent reason showed she allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a police officer. 

QVC To Acquire Online Retailer Zulily

(Seattle, WA)  --  Online retailer Zulily, which is based in Seattle, will be acquired by QVC parent company Liberty Interactive for two-point-four-billion dollars.  Officials say Zulily will continue operations in Seattle with its current management team, and the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year.  Liberty Interactive officials says QVC will benefit from Zulily's younger demographic, while Zulily will gain increased TV exposure through QVC. 

Number Of Oregon Traffic Deaths Increases

(Salem, OR)  --  The Oregon Department of Transportation says the number of traffic deaths statewide is on the rise.  The department says there have been 261 fatalities on Oregon roads so far this year, compared to 197 at this point in 2014.  Officials say that puts Oregon on track to reach 423 traffic deaths in 2015.  Nationwide, nearly 19-thousand people lost their lives in traffic crashes through the month of June.

Stolen Rascal Flatts Guitar Returned

(Eugene, OR)  --  A custom guitar that was stolen from the Rascal Flatts band during a concert at the Willamette Country Music Festival is back with its owner.  Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley says the two-thousand-dollar instrument was stolen from the backstage area during the Friday night show.  A nineteen-year-old man from Eugene and a 17-year-old girl from Junction City who attended the show were identified as suspects, and arrangements were made by sheriff's deputies to have the guitar returned.  The guitar was handed over Sunday evening, and charges won't be filed at the request of the band.

Police Investigating Deadly Crash Near Willamina

(Willamina, OR)  --  Police are investigating a crash that killed one person and injured two others on Highway 18 near Willamina.  Authorities say a car carrying three people went out of control and struck a tree Saturday morning.  The crash killed 21-year-old Juan Bermudez Gutierrez and critically injured 22-year-old Brian Quintana.  The driver of the car, 30-year-old Jose Bermudez Gutierrez of Portland, suffered minor injuries.  Police are investigating whether impaired driving was a factor in the wreck. 

Motorcyclist Killed In Crash Near Amboy

(Amboy, WA)  --  A 49-year-old man is dead, following a motorcycle crash in Clark County.  The Washington State Patrol says Ariel resident Keith Wilson was riding north around 7:30 yesterday morning on S-R 503 near Amboy, when he lost control and crashed.  Troopers say Wilson was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene. 

Man Shot And Wounded At Child's Birthday Party

(Portland, OR)  --  A man is being treated for a gunshot wound he suffered at a child's birthday party in Portland's Laurelhurst Park.  Police say two men were having an argument during the party yesterday, when one pulled a gun and shot the other.  Both men ran from the scene.  The wounded man was dropped off about 20 minutes later at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.  No arrests have been made. 

Nation's Top Car-theft "Hot Spots" In California, Washington

(Undated)  --  The annual National Insurance Crime Bureau report on car thefts nationwide shows only California ranks higher in the number of auto-theft "hot spots" than Washington state.  The NCIB's 2014 rankings are based on the reported car thefts in metropolitan statistical areas of 50-thousand or more residents.  Spokane-Spokane Valley ranked sixth in the nation, with more than 560 auto thefts per 100-thousand population, while the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area was ranked eighth, with 552 car thefts per capita.  The Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro statistical area is ranked 59th in the U.S., with more than 296 auto thefts per capita last year. 

Washington County Wildfire Contained

(Banks, OR)  --  Officials say firefighters were able to contain a Washington County wildfire, despite strong winds.  The grass fire broke out yesterday afternoon near Union Point Cemetery in Banks.  A spokesman for Banks Fire District 13 says the department was spread thin yesterday because of the number of firefighters assisting with wildfires across the state.  No structures were threatened by the Banks fire, and there were no injuries. 

Gas Price Average In Portland Area Falls

(Portland, OR)  --  The average price of regular gasoline in the Portland area is below three dollars for the first time in a while.  Triple-A reports the average of just under three bucks a gallon is nearly a nickel cheaper than the average of a week ago.  The national average for regular is two-67 a gallon. 

Portland May Limit Pot Shop Hours Of Operation

(Portland, OR)  --  The city of Portland is considering a limit on how long marijuana dispensaries can operate each day.  There's a proposal to limit the hours for 24-hour medical-marijuana dispensaries that sell recreational pot to between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.  Officials who are developing Portland's Marijuana Policy Program say the goal is to allow marijuana businesses to operate without affecting the quality of life in neighborhoods. 
 

Oregon City Manager On Administrative Leave

(Oregon City, OR)  --  The Oregon City manager is on administrative leave, pending investigation of a complaint that was filed earlier this month.  The "Portland Tribune" reports that David Frasher, manager of Oregon City, is the subject of a complaint that city officials say is "noncriminal" in nature.  Frazer will receive full pay and benefits during the leave.  Oregon City Community Development Director Tony Konkol has been appointed as interim city manager. 

Police: Woman Sexually Assaulted Near Apartment

(Portland, OR)  --  Police say a woman was sexually assaulted in a parking lot near her apartment in Southwest Portland.  The 37-year-old woman reported the attack Wednesday morning near the complex on Southwest Oleson Road.  The victim told investigators she pepper-sprayed the attacker and caused him to flee.  The man is described as white, between 30 and 50-years-old, with a muscular build and short dark hair, and wearing a light-colored sweatshirt and shorts. 

Vancouver Man Accused Of Taking Indecent Liberties

(Vancouver, WA)  --  A Vancouver man is facing charges, after being accused of drugging women he went out with on dates.  Authorities say 36-year-old Christopher Lashbrook was arrested after the victims complained of becoming unexpectedly drunk and waking up in non-consensual, intimate situations.  Prosecutors say the incidents took place over a two-year period.  Lashbrook is charged with three counts of indecent liberties. 

Former Teacher Accused Of Inappropriate Contact With Student

(Springfield, OR)  --  A former teacher at Thurston High School is slated to appear this morning in Lane County Circuit Court, after being accused of having inappropriate contact with a student.  Authorities say Stephanie Rodakowski is accused of kissing the student, sending him topless photos, and asking that he send explicit photos of himself.  Rodakowski is charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and tampering with physical evidence.  She reportedly resigned from her teaching job at Thurston High last month. 
 

Gasoline Prices Down Again

(Portland, OR)  --  Prices at the gas pump are still heading down.  Triple-A reports the Portland-area average for regular is three-01 a gallon, a penny cheaper than yesterday.  It's also five-and-a-half cents below the average of a week ago. 

WA Slaughterhouse Issues Recall Of Hogs

(Graham, WA)  --  A slaughterhouse in Pierce County, Washington is recalling more than 116-thousand pounds of whole hogs, after its products were found to be connected to a Salmonella outbreak in ten Washington counties.  Kapowsin Meats in Graham announced the recall yesterday, saying it includes whole hogs for barbecue produced between April 18th and July 27th.  State health officials say there have been 134 confirmed cases of Salmonella in Washington, but hundreds more people may have been sickened by it. 
 

Hit-and-run Suspect Arrested At Wendy's Drive-thru

(Tualatin, OR)  --  A suspect in a hit-and-run crash is in custody.  Police say Elnando Broussard crashed into a box truck yesterday at the intersection of Southwest Tualatin-Sherwood Road and Southwest Martinazzi Avenue, and fled the scene.  Shortly afterward, police reported seeing Broussard drive his van into a sign and a small tree at a Wendy's drive-thru.  Broussard is facing two counts of hit-and-run.

Dave's Killer Bread Sold To Flowers Foods

(Milwaukie, OR)  --  Dave's Killer Bread of Milwaukie is about to be acquired by the nation's second-largest baking company.  Flowers Foods has agreed to purchase Dave's Killer Bread for 275-million dollars, pending regulatory approval.  Officials at Dave's say the Milwaukie bakery, which was founded in 1955, will operate as an independent subsidiary under Flowers, and is expected to continue expansion of its Oregon operation.  Dave's Killer Bread is known as the best-selling organic bread in the U.S.

Cases Of Salmonella In Washington Up To 134

(Olympia, WA)  --  State health officials say there are 134 confirmed cases in ten counties across Washington of Salmonella linked to pork products.  King County has the highest number of cases at 84, while Snohomish County has 24 and Pierce has 12.  Yakima County has five cases of Salmonella, while Clark, Mason, and Thurston counties each have two.  Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, and Kitsap counties each have one confirmed case.  Health officials are urging residents to make sure pork is thoroughly cooked before eating it.

Independent Party Could Gain Major-Party Status

(Salem, OR)  --  The Independent Party could gain major-party status in Oregon.  The "Portland Tribune" reports the Secretary of State's Office is scheduled to announce next week whether the Independent Party of Oregon has enough registered voters to qualify for major-party status.  Should that happen, the state will be required to finance and hold its 2016 primary election, and the party's winning candidates will appear on the general-election ballot with the Democratic and Republican nominees.  This year's voter-registration deadline is August 16th.

Police: Bank Robber Was Woman Wearing Fake Mustache

(Happy Valley, OR)  --  Police are looking for a woman wearing a fake mustache, who robbed a bank and threatened to set off a bomb in it.  Authorities say the incident happened around 3:35 yesterday afternoon at a US Bank on Southeast 82nd Avenue in Portland.  Investigators say the woman, who had her hair tucked under a red baseball cap, did not display a weapon.  The suspect is described as Hispanic, about five-foot-three, 100 pounds, wearing a black long-sleeve shirt and black saggy pants, and carrying a black backpack.

Train Trestle Continues To Burn

(Sherwood, OR)  --  Firefighters continue to monitor a wooden train trestle in Sherwood, which caught fire around 4:20 yesterday afternoon.  The trestle is located near Southwest Tualatin-Sherwood Road and Langer Farms Parkway, and authorities say it's owned by Portland & Western Railroad.  Officials say it appears the fire started on the 600-foot-long trestle and spread to the brush below.  There have been no reports of injuries.

Man Charged With DUII Following Crash

(Portland, OR)  --  A man is facing a DUII charge after driving up onto the Broadway Bridge sidewalk and crashing into scaffolding.  Police say even though the bridge had been closed two hours earlier for a maintenance and painting project, the man drove past "bridge closed" signs and onto the north sidewalk before hitting the scaffolding yesterday.  Authorities say 37-year-old Jesse Joe Allen is facing multiple charges.

Sellwood Neighborhood Swarmed By Beetles

(Portland, OR)  --  A Portland neighborhood is being swarmed by beetles.  The swarm is taking place in the Sellwood neighborhood along the Willamette River, and state agriculture officials are testing the insects.  They're trying to determine whether the bugs are a type of leaf beetle that was released several years ago to eradicate an invasive species.
 

Gresham City Councilor Resigns

(Gresham, OR)  --  A member of the Gresham City Council is stepping down.  Michael McCormick's resignation was announced yesterday by Gresham city officials, but no other details were released.  McCormick, a retired Portland firefighter, was elected to the council in 2012.  The Gresham City Council will have 30 days to choose someone to fill his term in office, which expires in December 2016.
 

Portland Man Sought In Deadly Shooting

(Gresham, OR)  --  A Portland man is considered a "person of interest" in connection with a deadly shooting in Gresham.  Police are looking for 29-year-old Wallace Theodore Simpson, who's described as African-American, standing six-foot-three and weighing 235 pounds.  The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of Northeast 162nd Avenue and Halsey Street, resulting in the death of 27-year-old Kevin Dwayne Varnado of Portland.  Another man was wounded.

Cache Of Stolen Items Found In Oak Grove

(Oak Grove, OR)  --  Authorities are sorting through a  treasure trove of stolen items that have been recovered at a home in Oak Grove.  A search warrant was executed at the residence on the five-thousand block of Southeast El Centro Way, where police found items ranging from a coin-operated carousel, to disassembled bicycles, to a former Navy corpsman's seabag and uniforms.  Three suspects have been arrested, including 26-year-old Shane Roundy, 24-year-old Amanda McFarland, and 58-year-old Dan "Pops" Wolf.

Sanders Campaign: Record Set In Portland

(Portland, OR)  --  Campaign staffers for Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders say his speech at Portland's Moda Center drew 28-thousand people, a record crowd for his bid to be the nominee.  Yesterday's rally was originally scheduled for Veterans Memorial Coliseum, but was moved to the Moda Center because a larger crowd was expected.  Sanders, who's an avowed socialist, told supporters that income inequality is the "great moral issue of our time" and pledged to continue taking on the "billionaire class."

Man Accused Of Taking Upskirt Photos At Mall

(Tigard, OR)  --  A Tualatin man is facing charges after being accused of snapping upskirt photos at Washington Square Mall.  Police say two young girls at the H&M store complained Saturday that the suspect was positioning his phone camera under women's skirts.  Police arrived after store security detained 24-year-old Ignacio Manuel Napoles Cinto, who's being charged with 15 counts of personal privacy invasion.

Two Arrested During "Black Lives" Protest

(Portland, OR)  --  Police say two people were arrested during a "Black Lives Matter" protest in Southeast Portland.  Authorities say about 100 people blocked all traffic lanes around 3:15 p.m. yesterday in the area of Southeast 182nd Avenue and Southeast Division Street.  Police say two protesters who refused to move away from the scene were taken into custody.  Otherwise, traffic was blocked for less than ten minutes and the protest ended without incident.
 

Man Accused Of Stealing Car, Other Items From Home

(Aloha, OR)  --  A Beaverton man is in custody, after being accused of stealing a car and other items from homes in Aloha.  Police believe 23-year-old Alan De Jesus Victoria stole a Mazda yesterday morning from a house on Southwest Monson Street in Aloha, then drove to a boarded-up house on Northwest 183rd Avenue and stole items from inside.  Victoria is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal trespassing, and criminal mischief.
 

Two Seriously Injured In Collision

(Portland, OR)  --  Two people are being treated for serious injuries, following a collision involving a motorcycle in North Portland.  Police say a delivery truck turned left and collided with an oncoming motorcycle at the intersection of North Williams Avenue and North Monroe Street early yesterday morning.  A man and a woman riding the motorcycle were thrown from the vehicle, and the man suffered life-threatening injuries.  Police say the truck driver wasn't seriously injured.
 

Thousands Participate In Providence Bridge Pedal

(Portland, OR)  --  Officials estimate that 20-thousand people participated in the annual Providence Bridge Pedal.  Yesterday's event included about 18-thousand cyclists and 17-hundred walkers making treks across the Fremont and Marquam bridges, as well as the new Tilikum Crossing.  The new span is closed once again, and won't have its official grand opening until September 12th.

WA State Agencies Allowing Parents To Bring Infants To Work

(Olympia, WA)  --  At least two Washington state government agencies are allowing parents who work for them to bring their infant children to the office.  It began with a pilot program started a few months ago by the state Department of Health, and now the Washington Traffic Safety Commission is starting a similar pilot program.  Parents are allowed to bring their babies to work until they reach the age of six months.  Officials say the first six months of a child's life are important for them to be able to bond with their parents.

(Clatskanie, OR)  --  The police chief of the Columbia County town of Clatskanie is on paid administrative leave, following allegations he made racist statements.  Marvin Hoover, who's been chief of police for 13 years, is accused of making such comments, but investigators haven't released any further details.  KATU-TV reports the investigation is expected to take about two weeks.

Man Killed By Amtrak Train In Salem

(Salem, OR)  --  A man is dead, after being hit by an Amtrak train in Salem.  Officials say the northbound train hit the pedestrian around 2:45 yesterday afternoon at a crossing in the 13-hundred block of Sunnyview Road Northeast in Salem.  The name of the pedestrian hasn't been made public.

Police: DUI Suspect Arrested With .34 BAC

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland police say a man with five drunk-driving convictions was arrested this week with a point-34 blood-alcohol level.  Authorities say after 51-year-old Steven Burns told officers Wednesday during a traffic stop that he might have had a "little bit" to drink, the breathalyzer registered more than four times the legal limit of point-oh-eight.  Police say Burns committed a lane-change violation in the area of Northeast 122nd Avenue and Siskiyou Street.

Police: Gang Incidents In Portland Up To 100 For 2015

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland police say the city is on pace to break a record for the number of gang-related incidents in a year.  Officials told the "Portland Tribune" there have been at least 100 gang-related incidents this year, compared to the record of 118 for all of 2012.  Portland police union President Daryl Turner is urging the City Council to speed up the process of hiring more officers.

Garage Fire Spreads To Nearby Homes

(Portland, OR)  --  Investigators are trying to find out what started a garage fire that spread to two nearby homes in Southeast Portland.  The blaze was reported around 8:15 last night in the 76-hundred block of Southeast 66th Avenue.  One of the homes was vacant, and the fire had spread to the attic before it was extinguished.  There was some exterior damage to the second home.  No one was injured.

(Portland, OR)  --  Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is scheduled to be in Portland Sunday for a rally at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  Sanders, whose poll numbers indicate he'll be a formidable challenger to fellow Democrat and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will be in Seattle for a fundraiser the day before the Portland event.  Doors are slated to open at six p.m. Sunday for the rally, and there's no admission charge.

Man Pleads Guilty To Killing Girlfriend

(Silverton, OR)  --  A man who's accused of killing his girlfriend in Silverton nearly a year ago is awaiting sentencing, after pleading guilty to all charges.  Authorities say 43-year-old Jason Clifford Down murdered 50-year-old Cassandra Wagner on August 30th, 2014.  Down pleaded guilty yesterday to multiple charges, including aggravated murder, first-degree burglary and unlawful use of a weapon.  Sentencing is expected to take place next month.

Grass Fire In Forest Grove

(Forest Grove, OR)  --  A grass fire that threatened homes in Forest Grove is now fully contained.  Fire officials say the blaze was sparked by farm equipment working a wheat field.  It scorched four acres and threatened at least two home before it was brought under control.  No structures were damaged.

Judge Orders Hayes To Turn Over Emails

(Salem, OR)  --  The fiancee of former Governor John Kitzhaber is being ordered to turn over emails having to do with state business.  A Marion County Circuit Court judge ruled that Cylvia Hayes was a public servant at the time she served as an unpaid policy adviser to Kitzhaber, and the emails are considered part of the public record.  The "Portland Tribune" reports Judge Tracy Prall has given Hayes 14 days to provide copies of her emails to the court.  In April, Governor Kate Brown's office released 94-thousand emails between Hayes and Kitzhaber administration staff members.

Demolition Begins On Civic Stadium Remains

(Eugene, OR)  --  Crews are tearing apart what remains of the charred Eugene ball field that was once Civic Stadium.  Four pre-teen boys are facing arson charges in connection with the June 29th fire that destroyed the historic wooden stadium.  It's estimated that demolition and cleanup of the site will take about three weeks.  The Eugene Civic Alliance is to meet this fall to look at a plan to redevelop the property.

Fifty Vehicles Vandalized In SE Portland

(Portland, OR)  --  Police are looking for suspects, after about 50 vehicles were vandalized in Southeast Portland.  Authorities say the vehicles, parked in the area of Southeast 151st Avenue and Hawthorne Court, were sprayed with graffiti early yesterday morning.  Investigators are following up on a report that three juvenile males were seen in the area at the time of the incidents.

Man Dies While Swimming At Rooster Rock State Park

(Multnomah County, OR)  --  Multnomah County sheriff's deputies are investigating, after a man drowned while swimming at Rooster Rock State Park.  Authorities say the man, who was in his 50s, went under the water around five p.m. yesterday, and emergency crews were called in after he didn't resurface.  The man's body was recovered by a dive crew around eight o'clock last night.  His name hasn't been released.
 

Woman Who Claimed Being Raped By UO Basketball Players Settles Lawsuit

(Eugene, OR)  --  A student who claimed she was raped by three University of Oregon basketball players says she's happy to have the case behind her, after settling a lawsuit against the school.  The university has agreed to pay the student 800-thousand dollars and waive all tuition and housing costs for four years of school.  The players accused by the woman were never criminally charged, but all three were dismissed from the basketball team and eventually left the university.

Town Of Roosevelt Evacuated Because Of Fire

(Roosevelt, WA)  --  The entire Klickitat County town of Roosevelt is under evacuation orders, as a quickly-moving wildfire continues to bear down on the area.  The fire, which was first reported yesterday afternoon, jumped S-R 14 and damaged several barns and outbuildings.  No homes have been damaged so far.  An evacuation shelter is in place at the Bickleton School.

Police: Woman Who Jumped From Bldg Committed Suicide

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland police say a Hillsboro woman who died after falling off a downtown building committed suicide.  The woman, who's been identified as 46-year-old Juana Elena Valdez, jumped off the roof of the 27-story Standard Insurance Center.  Police say Valdez struck a car as she fell.  Her body was found on Southwest Salmon Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

Clinton To Visit Portland Today

(Portland, OR)  --  Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic Presidential hopeful, will be in the Rose City today for a fundraiser.  The former first lady will be in Portland only for a few hours, as she'll look to raise some money for her campaign at a location in the city's Dunthorpe neighborhood.  The event will cost 27-hundred-dollars per ticket.  "The Oregonian" reports the fundraiser will be hosted by major Democratic donor Win McCormack and political consultant Carol Butler.

Search Continues For Escaped Inmate

(Portland, OR)  --  The search is still on for Daniel Spillers, an inmate who escaped from the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Northeast Portland.  Officials say Spillers was discovered missing Sunday evening after a door was found to have been broken open in the kitchen.  He was serving time on charges of second-degree burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.  Oregon State Police and Portland Police are involved in the search.

Report: Betz Involved In Relationship With Police Officer

(Newberg, OR)  --  A police report says Newberg City Manager Jacque Betz had an "inappropriate relationship" with a police officer.  Betz placed Police Chief Brian Casey on administrative leave on July 17th, and the action prompted an investigation.  Various media outlets report that the police report, written by a Newberg Police captain, indicates that Betz may have suspended Casey to keep him from investigating the officer, who was not named in the report.  Casey was reinstated on July 24th and later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Person Dies In Fall From Building

(Portland, OR)  --  Police are investigating the death of a person who fell or jumped from the roof of the Standard Insurance Center in downtown Portland.  Authorities say the person was found dead in the street yesterday evening, and may have hit a car.  There's been no information about the person's identity.

Inmate Escapes From Columbia River Correctional Institution

(Portland, OR)  --  Authorities are conducting a search for an inmate who escaped from the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Northeast Portland.  Convicted burglar Danny Spillers was discovered missing early yesterday morning after a broken window was found in the kitchen.  Spillers is described as white, six feet tall, weighing 185 pounds, with red hair and hazel eyes, wearing DOC clothing.  He had been in Department of Corrections custody since June 9th.

Man Drowns While Saving Son In Toutle River

(Cowlitz County, WA)  --  Officials say a man who drowned in the Toutle River while saving his young son was from Toledo, Washington.  Authorities say 35-year-old Benjamin A. Brooks grabbed his son, who began struggling while swimming yesterday with the family near milepost 19 of the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, and was pulling him back to the bank of the river.  Brooks vanished under the surface and didn't reappear.  Officials say he was underwater for about a half-hour before his body was recovered by emergency crews.

Suspect In Battle Ground Murder Arrested

(Battle Ground, WA)  --  A man is in custody after being accused of murder in connection with a disturbance in Battle Ground.  Authorities received a report of the incident shortly before midnight Saturday from a home near Southeast Grace Avenue and Southeast 2nd Street in Battle Ground.  The suspect was arrested shortly afterward, but no information has been released regarding the homicide.

Woman's Body Found In Columbia River

(Vancouver, WA)  --  An autopsy is being conducted on the body of a woman, recovered from the Columbia River.  Authorities say the body was spotted yesterday morning, about 50 feet from the bank of the river off Southeast Rivershore Drive, east of I-205 in Vancouver.  The woman's identity hasn't been made public.

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland police have a man in custody after he was accused of stealing a vehicle that was left idling.  The owner of the Toyota 4Runner told police he left it running so he could leave on the air-conditioning to cool the vehicle down.  Authorities say San Saechao jumped into the vehicle and fought off the owner, who tried to intervene.  The car was found abandoned about six blocks away, and police say Saechao was tracked down at his home and arrested.  The owner of the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Fuel Prices Lower

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland-area fuel prices are on the decline.  Triple-A reports the current average for regular is three-ten a gallon, down nearly two cents from the average of a week ago.  The national average for regular is two-65 a gallon.
